Just to comment on what you said about people not taking your advice for instance with the salt example you gave; I think dietitians should learn more about behavioral studies aka getting people to understand why they do what they do and how to successfully change it. Read some habit books on how to build better habits and change your life for the better. Not only that but understand that if someone if Eating a lot of salt you can’t just say “hey stop eating so much salt” because they don’t realistically know how to. Especially when they’re so use to eating a certain way. So my advice would be to share with them what to supplement with instead. Table salt is nutrient deficient but sea salt is rich with minerals and you end up using less because table salt is easier to over do. Also learning when to salt your foods. Salt after the meal is done instead of during the cooking process. Cut down on processed junk because that is usually way higher in sodium content than anything home made. But don’t just tell them to do it, show them how they can and that meal prep is the way!! Hope this helps

This is done with nutrition counseling. The concept already exists. In some settings, like the hospital, you do not get as many opportunities to work through behavior changes. Its more education. It depends on the setting that the RD is in. I am almost done with my internship, so I have had chances to see some of this firsthand.

Great points about the DI, the low pay, and the lack of diversity.

For me regular chemistry was so easy and made a ton of sense and the math wasn’t difficult, but as soon as Orgo came, all the 💩 hit the fan 😂 I don’t _hate_ the class in general, I just hate how my school they cram all the reaction stuff for the last 2 months and expect you to know it all when starting Orgo 2 😅 and then they’re _SHOCKED_ when the curve for the class is 70 being an A 😂

I was doing the online dietetics program at Alabama, and I experienced a lot of racism as a hispanic woman. The professors bullied me out of the program. I ended up completing a Masters, getting my NASM Nutrition Coach certification, and currently working on my Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) credential. Going this route was the best decision I ever made. I was able to work full time while completing my clinical hours under supervision. I test in June, and I will continue with my DCN ❤ this fall.

Our tuition isnt that high and a lot of these cons you listed are for students who intend to do the masters degree and become a registered dietitian. There are a lot of nutrition options that don’t require you to become a registered dietitian and they don’t require so much schooling. I am pursuing the DTR requirement.

They aren’t open enough about the cons from the beginning. At one point one of my professors said, “I hope none of you are in this for the money”.. and at the time I wasn’t. But life happens and you need money to survive. Also, you aren’t really “not having a paycheck for a year”, it’s more like you have to PAY to work. It’s an internship that you need to PAY for. Plus, the additional requirement of the masters makes more like 2 years at this point.

I applaud the bravery for going into dietetics without being good in science! Brother did a similar thing, he wasn’t the best in math, but with the help of a tutor (or several), constant office hours, help from friends, and lots of books from the library, he managed to graduate in Statistics/Data Analysis. So, my advice to you is you don’t need to be good _right now_ but with enough effort and practice you’ll eventually reach the level of excellence ✨ (or hopefully close to it). Another piece of advice that you may already be doing is _keep all your notes and have them organized_ . One of the best things about STEM is how interconnected everything is. Something from nutrition will tie in with something from anatomy/physiology will tie in with something from chemistry will tie in with something from microbiology, which _all_ strengthens your understanding of the topic. (I recommend writing notes on a tablet/iPad so it’s easier, but not everyone can afford to do that). You’ll be fine! Remember to _breathe_ . Meditate, drink your water, chat with friends and family, everything will work out in the end 👍🏻

I have found that this option can be the most efficient option. It is definitely a busy 1.5-2-year program, but there are ways to minimize costs. A lot of Master's programs offer graduate assistantships to students (teaching assistants, research assistants, graders for undergraduate courses, etc) This is a way to get your tuition covered and even receive a stipend in most cases. If you are able to afford housing, it may be a great way to knock out the internship and Master's at once. Just something to keep in mind :)

As a MD student and group personal trainer I realize you have to tell patients what SALT really actually IS and WHY eating it is FATAL!!! ANYTHING in crystal form is bad for you! Don't have to go into too much chem just be brief and precise. After that move on to the next patient....

I'm on my junior year of nutrition and I'm just coming here to say, is not worth it. There are almost no jobs in the fields, you're probably going to have to work on your own because of the lack of positions there are. It's sad but it's true. And if you are from a third world country looking to migrate with this degree, it's literally worthless.

@@alisonodette Hey! Where are you from? I'm also from a so called "third world country" lol. Could you please a little bit more about why you said that about this major, please? I was thinking about pursuing it :(.

@@seatea3463 hii! I'm from México, and sure I'll elaborate. I will say it's a nice career and you can implement some of the things that you learn in your own life. But I have found that there are a lot of cons too. The job field is basically non existent, even the teachers tell us that. The only places you could work in are Hospitals, not a lot of businesses are looking to hire a nutritionist, it's just not a priority. If you decide to work in hospitals, is extremely BAD PAYED, we are talking about around $500 dollars a month or less for really long hours of work and huge responsabilities. I'll say the only way to gain money as a nutritionist is if you put your own private practice, but you have to be good so people will want to come back, be prepared to have to deal with angry people who don't follow their plans and blame you for not loosing weight overnight. Plus obviously the money you have to invest for your private practice in the first place, which might be hard if you're not well off already because you need some savings (and you can't really have savings if you're working in a hospital with low pay, you might as well be a teacher instead because they gain the same amount of money, at least in Mexico which is so unfair). But if you do manage to put a private practice, you can do really well! especially if you have some sort of specialization, but I'll say that to put a private practice you need to be sure that you're staying in that place for some years at least, which is not my case so that's why I think my degree is pretty worthless. If your dream is to move countries (like mine), I would say you should skip this degree because in first world countries (like the USA and Canada) any degree from the medical area from a 3rd world country is not valid. You have to become a dietitian in order to do that and is a whole other thing, I would say do your research on it but it is expensive and hard to get that title. So you won't be able to find any job in your field over there. I'm not sure how Europe works but I have a friend who studied medicine and he wanted to move to Poland and they told him his Mexican degree is worthless there so yeah, be careful. If I had the chance I would've studied something else. But again, don't be discouraged, if you already have a plan, you want to stay in your country and put a private practice, go for it! it's an interesting career, and if you follow that path, you will make good money

Finally speaks the truth. I have my degree in Human Nutrition and Foods and lets just say it hasn't landed me anywhere.. it's been super stressful for me because everyone thinks im an RD but im not. Here in texas you have to do 1200 hours of a dietetic internship. It was not combined with the degree. I applied and I did not get in. I paid to apply and i didnt get in. Its soooo stressful if youre not going to put the work and money into it. Id say stray away unless you have alot of experience in the nutrition area and have money. I have 10k in student loans for nothing lol working as a virtual assistant and I don't know if it will ever be sustainable.
