I think the peg-board-to-French-cleat transition is just a part of work shop growing pains. I finally ditched the peg board and got my cleat wall up, so thank you for the great fixture ideas!
The trick is to make some of the holders so that you can pull out the tools to the front instead of lifting them out upward. Or at least diagonally. Then you can put those holders beneath the other ones and never hit anything above. It lets you use the space more efficiently. My shed is only 8x9 feet, gotta use every tiniest nook.
Nice work! The FC offers some nice flexibility for moving the sets around. Personally, I still use peg hooks (with essential locking clips), but my most strict rule is that the most common tools are to be in the easiest accessed part of the wall. The least common further away from my arms reach. My go-to is....I really like a shallow 3" deep lightweight cardboard box for all common tools (hammer, screws, pliers, adjustable wrench, cordless drill, drill bits, common screwdrivers) and I leave them in that box for common around the house jobs. I got the idea from how the dentist does it with his common tray of tools. I just keep my "tray" ready to go anywhere in the house and prevents me from making a trip back to the garage for a tool I forgot to include. Of course, I will add a specific selection of tools to my common tray from my pegboard as I need. For instance, for electrical work (wire cutters, wire strippers, electrical tape, needle nose pliers, etc) I will add those in addition to my common tools in my tray.
I like that you used your imagination to make your tool holders. A stop block behind the tool holder will keep it from coming off the wall when you pull up on screwdrivers.
I did a similar chisel holder but for about 10 chisels. I routed the grooves and screwed clear Perspex over the front so I can see at a glance which chisel to grab. Turned out fantastic.
think about putting the holders at a slight angle. that way there is way less vertical dead space since you dont need clearance to pull it out. your screwdriver holder for example if you were to slightly angle it towards you then you can put a second rack right above it. in my small shop thats a must!
I like what you did. For things like screwdrivers, I don't think one row of tools per holder is enough. Make the holder deeper to hold 2 or 3 rows. You get more tools per square foot of wall. I've also decided that most French cleat brackets need to include a lip goes pretty tightly under the flat bottom of the cleat board. Otherwise some brackets will lift out of the cleat when you lift the tool from it's holder.
I like the FC system, but I'm finding that the holders can pop off when you pull a tool when your not quit strait up and clean the holder. I'm going back and placing my cleats on the wall closer together and making a locking tab so the holder can't clear the wall cleat. nice job. the system give a lot of options.
The French Cleat & your video saved my storage problem as I have no floor space & only 22 inches of wall in 3 places which I can hang 2-3 long 7 ft x 1in. boards which gives me 6 to 9 boards to hang stuff on! : ) Thank You!
The Narex chisels have a 7/8” retainer, you can just drill 7/8 holes. Anything larger just mortise the two sides out. 7/8” will hold firmly while still give easy access.
Vertical storage frees up your horizontal space. French cleats are the way forward but watch how much space you put between each cleat as you don't want to inhibit tool removal from the cleats below. Thanks for posting.
Dave does really careful work; great job! Like the way your create and use jigs so often; very efficient. I'm building a similar French cleat system for my garage and shop but instead of such a uniform wall of slats I simply put a board with 45 degree angle wherever it's needed around the shop and garage. In this way I don't have to make an array of slats that may or may not be too crowded for what I need. Further, I'm just using scrap wood to keep it all inexpensive.
Just found your channel while browsing for storage ideas. I like your take on the FC system. The plier rack was cool, but my favorite is the chisel holder. With your setup, the individual chisels are easily accessible, but the business end is also covered. That is great for me, as I am the first guy to hit a corner of sharp stuff with my hand.
Great work on those French Cleats, i have some of them with Cupboards on them, and i'm now thinking of doing a French Cleat Tool Wall in some space i have. Thanks for the Tool ideas. New Subscriber. Barry (ENG)
Thanks.. A great start. When will you show me how to make the remainder? I need to get rid of my large tool chest, my homemade rolling clamp storage and anything else that can go on the wall. Looking forward to the next instructional. Thanks again
I’ve watched many many videos on French cleats. I’m still waiting for some one to tell me the exact dimensions of each cleat and the exact spacing between them!
I have watched lots of these French cleat videos, but I can't understand the need for glue. I just screw them in and they're done. Nothing comes loose.
Hey Dave . It's a blast making these holders , isn't it ? I put french cleats in a cabinet I copied from Measured Workshop on YT . They're way better than pegboard if you ask me . Nice video.
Did you mean: pliers Search Results Featured snippet from the web Noun. 1. plyers - a gripping hand tool with two hinged arms and (usually) serrated jaws.
Thanks. Truthfully, I couldn't say how I arrived at the width of the cleats other than it looked about right to me. They seem to be working well, but that doesn't mean that I won't ever trim them down if I decide it would work better. My shop will probably always be a work in progress.
Be careful with the nail gun u keep your fingers too close. Sometimes nails getting out in opposite direction. It happened to me when it penetraited through my nail.
Thank you so much, Dave, for sharing such an inspirational video. I will definitely retire my pegboard, soon. By the way, what is the height of the french cleat? Also, what is the space between them? Thanks again, Dave ;-)
The strips are 3 1/2' wide at the widest (front) part and spaced 3" apart. Truthfully, the widths and spacing were pretty arbitrary. I was making them up as I went along based on the material I had and the space. It's very possible I may rip them narrower or re-position them in the future.
That's a "dado stack". Two outside blades and a variable number of chippers between them to cut a wide slot. I understand that they are illegal to sell in many countries.
laura palmore You can certainly make them from 1x_ material. I have used solid wood cleats to hang cabinets. I think plywood might be cheaper but I would price it out before deciding.
Hello. I am French. I watched your video with a lot of interest. Could you indicate the dimensions of the cuts of the cleats. I imagine that the angle is at 45 degrees. What spacing did you use between each cleat? Thank you
Good idea with the chisel holder, despite being very complicated, it is very safe
I think the peg-board-to-French-cleat transition is just a part of work shop growing pains. I finally ditched the peg board and got my cleat wall up, so thank you for the great fixture ideas!
Why not a combination of both? Both have advantages.
The trick is to make some of the holders so that you can pull out the tools to the front instead of lifting them out upward.

I never seen anyone use a table saw as good as this guy!!
oh that's a good idea I never thought of... square screwdriver holder. seems way easier than trying to drill holes and make it look nice

Awesome fun to watch NOW Build!!! thank you for showing your work
"i dont like pegb oard, so i took it out." and this is the best answer ive ever heard about anything. :)
I am so glad to see this today. Was going to make a holder for my files tonight

I really liked the chisel holder where you can see which is which.

In case anyone is still wondering, the music is Accidents Will Happen - Silent Partner. You're welcome! (great video btw)
Really like the chisel holder. Slick!
I like the way that you painted the rails the same color as the walls. Really nice!😁
Dang , you are quite the craftsman ! 👍🏽

I was specifically looking for ideas on hanging chisels on a French cleat. I like how yours are enclosed!
Thanks. It's important to me to keep the cutting edges covered since I'm clumsy.
Thanks Mr. Harshberger, I´ll try to do it!!
great job, all good designs, loved video.
I just subscribe to any woodworking channel I find. I hope it's a good vid!

Genial. Empecé el bricolaje por ver este vídeo.
Nice work, both the wood and video. I'm in the process of doing french cleats myself....great inspiration from you. Thanks!
I have a peg board I have been procrastinating to put up on my workbench. I definitely am switching to french cleats now. Should be easier. Thanks

Thanks Andrew. Exposed sharp edges are a problem for me too.
I like and approve of all of it and will give Pegboards a second and last thought. This is better!
You will have less waste in cutting the cleats if you make the first cut wider and cut them in half. You get two cleats with little or no waste.
Excelente trabajo maestro gracias por compartir sus conocimientos, es lo que necesito hacer saludos
I've been thinking of reorganizing my tools also. You've given me some good ideas. thanks
I found the French Cleat System filled with dust and sawdust so I went for the peg board as it’s a lot cleaner.
great video instruction and ideas!
very good !

Septimus Pretorius check out "Which French Cleat style is right for you by: A Glimpse Inside.... best ive found yet hope it helps
Excellent idea, I'll give this a go, cheers..
Superb. I really need to get around to doing this in my shed.
Thanks
Phwarrr! This is next-level mate!
Greetings from France, well done !
Nice! Good job!
5:45 I love that push stick.
Excellent
This video must have been made before any safety gear was recommended on the table saw.
Great ideas

Very cool idea....I hate peg board too!
I thought I was on a DIY woodworking site.....but I guess I got a radio channel by mistake !

Bonjours, magnifique je prend note.
Like what you did out of scraps. Why did you use such large cleats on the wall since you didn’t add more support screws?
Thanks. Truthfully, I couldn't say how I arrived at the width of the cleats other than it looked about right to me. They seem to be working well, but that doesn't mean that I won't ever trim them down if I decide it would work better. My shop will probably always be a work in progress.

For a moment I read that as French Clit.
Nice simple build

What glue did you used sir?
Ive tries looking for tips on painting the FC, did you paint the sides on the plywood if so how?
Great video! Thank u for sharing :)
Thank you so much, Dave, for sharing such an inspirational video. I will definitely retire my pegboard, soon. By the way, what is the height of the french cleat? Also, what is the space between them? Thanks again, Dave ;-)
What was the size of the strips you mounted to the wall. You have cut sizes and lengths
Thinking of doing this today!

you can just rip a 2x4 at a 45 and it works just fine. that's what i did.
Ima make a french cleat holder that holds my french cleats.
Great video. Just wonder what saw blade you where using for the screwdriver holder? Kind type ???
That's a "dado stack". Two outside blades and a variable number of chippers between them to cut a wide slot. I understand that they are illegal to sell in many countries.
Valeu
👌👌👌
plz which circular table saw are you using?
Thanks for the org.
Can a French cleat system be made from 1x 6 or is it necessary to be 3/4” plywood?
laura palmore You can certainly make them from 1x_ material. I have used solid wood cleats to hang cabinets. I think plywood might be cheaper but I would price it out before deciding.
Отлично ! Veri good ! 👍
I hang TVs like this as well.
i love it i have to do this also👌
YES IF ONLY YOU DID'NT HAVE A DUST COLLECTION SYSTEM , BUT MOST WOODWORKERS DO TO ELIMINATE THAT PROBLEM.
Those tools you use to strip off the angles on nuts and heads of bolts.....They are Pliers; not plyers
Ben fatti. Bravo. Potresti upload a PDF dei modelli con le misure ? Grazie
Good job. Just asking where can I find this music that you first play please.
Thanks. The music is from the CZcams audio library. I looked, but I apparently deleted the file after editing so I don't know the name.
Why do something properly when you could use a nail instead?
Hello. I am French. I watched your video with a lot of interest. Could you indicate the dimensions of the cuts of the cleats. I imagine that the angle is at 45 degrees. What spacing did you use between each cleat? Thank you
Hi. The angle is indeed 45 degrees. The cleats are about three inches apart.
Thanks
