Man who spent 70 years in iron lung has died

- Paul Alexander developed polio at the age of 6. The disease left Paul paralyzed from the neck down and unable to breathe on his own. He was placed in an iron lung, a large metal cylinder that varies air pressure to stimulate breathing. Paul died at age 78, accomplishing more than anyone thought was possible. #polio #obituary #ironlung #cnn #news
After seeing this, how can i complain about single thing.
Right!
I never complain single thing. Multiple things..
Yeah wouldn't you think schools should make content like this mandatory. Most kids will watch it and realize they are blessed and will complain less. Others kids will show no empathy or care, and now you know which kids need the most help.
Because pain is relative to your own existence
@@brycepeddicord6763 I fully 👍 agree.

I know that Paul Alexander is resting in Peace.
Even at my age of 83 I need Positivity and Hope and Paul you have gifted it to me and all others on Earth.
Now let us use this Gift from Paul Alexander wisely.
Mahalo.
Is that a real lizard on his iron lung?
When you’re down, keeping your forward momentum really helps.
Keep busy.
My brother contracted polio at age 8. He spent a whole year in an iron lung. My brother was my hero. Dispite losing his entire left side he learned to ride a bike, surf, and ski. He married and had two boys. My mother gave him the seed to fight through his illness.
Now that is a marvelous accomplishment.. kudos to ur brother. Alan alda the actor had it too when young and his mom exercised his.legs and wrapped them in painful hot wraps and in and on so yes praises to
your brother
Amen
Born in 1943, polio was the scourge of summer, every summer that I was a small child. My mother isolated us at the park, and we were not allowed to run under sprinklers, or play with other kids, just our siblings. When the vaccine became available in 1955, hospitals opened their doors for long lines of people, with kids in tow, to get the shot. Not one kid cried on that long line. We all knew what polio meant, and were grateful for a medicine that would prevent it.
Yes. In those years my mom was also keeping us from pools that had public swim and loads of people, there was a belief that the intermittent splatter of sprinkler water caused polio so we weren't allowed to run thru the sprinkler on Hot days. How belief changes.
Chris from Michigan
Try replaying the tape now, with misinformation to battle 😢
@@donmccanna rushed and under-tested vaccine is different than one that was meticulously developed. the polio vaccine and covid vaccine are not the same.
I remember those same fears and restrictions every summer as a child in Montréal. And the enormous sense of freedom that vaccine gave us in 1955! 🤗
@@yourwrongloserhahawhat's not the same is that there's big money in the antivaxx movement. Parroting the nonsense about the covid vaccine being rushed, bc you're either ignorant of or blatantly lying about the fact that they've been working on coronavirus vaccines since sars1 & mers emerged (almost 20 years) is exactly the difference.

Did your facility have a lung, or did they have a special transport for his, or was he put on a traditional vent, or -PAP? So many questions! Hello Mary, how are you doing today, hope you’re fine and safe from the COVID-19 virus??
Let us remember children aren’t I iron lungs anymore because we vaccinate against polio! Count yourself lucky you have them.
Amen to this!!
I've had a paralyzed child on full ventilator support, and it was absolute hell for everyone... especially my child, obviously. And that was a modern, portable ventilator. The idea of a child being trapped in what amounts to a metal coffin for decades is so utterly horrific to me that I don't want to think about it...and as a parent the idea that there are parents who would willingly potentially subject their kids to anything as horrible as polio makes my blood run cold.
My parents grew up with the nightmarish spectre of polio looming over their childhoods- one of my dad's best friends is paralyzed from the waist down, and he considered himself lucky. Both my mom and dad talk about how their parents raced to get them in line for the polio vaccine, and my mom was actually so relieved when I got mine that she literally had tears in her eyes. I guess now that every class doesn't have a kid who comes back from summer break paralyzed, (if they ever came back at all) it's easy for people to forget just how truly vicious, cruel and *almost totally preventable* polio actually is. I understand that they think it's right, but unfortunately polio doesn't care what anyone thinks. IMHO, antivax people/parents should go to India and see rampant polio for themselves...and then they'd better hope their unvaccinated kids never go there.
🙏🏾💪🏾🙏🏾💪🏾🙏🏾
I am grateful for the vaccine and those organizations, such as Rotary International, that are still fighting to eradicate this horrible disease. 2 more countries to go before the world is safe from this. Please consider helping by donating to the cause.
@@randychristensen6503 Yes! Excellent comment!
I've seen the slums of India and the countless unfortunate people there whose bodies are twisted and atrophied due to polio, and it was absolutely beyond heartbreaking to know that it could have been prevented! And I also saw numerous people covered head to toe in smallpox scars...everyone with smallpox scars was elderly, which IMHO serves to prove just how effective vaccination programs can be. If enough caring people work together, then without a doubt we can make the horrors of polio a thing of the past, as well!
I love to support organizations that provide life-saving vaccinations to underserved populations in developing nations, and you've just reminded me that it's been a few months since I donated. Thank you for reminding me. 😊
Meanwhile people aren't vaxxing their kids and contributing to possible public health emergencies smh
Rest in peace sir! You deserve that spot in heaven! Enjoy sir!

This is fascinating story. May I ask why was he still in iron lung? Why couldn't he get advanced treatment and be on tracheostomy?
@rahelgetachew7121 my guess is bc his body was used to it somehow so maybe trying something new would've killed him idk that's my guess
