    Santa Cruz was developed to be the ultimate Sport Adventure Vehicle, a moniker confirmed in Hyundai’s early consumer research. The research found consumers, often living in urban environments, whose lifestyles include the need to escape to weekend adventures of all kinds. Many of these customers carry various gear and equipment that is better suited to an open bed rather than a typical SUV body style. These buyers want versatile transportation that is equally flexible for urban, adventure, occupational or even home improvement gear. Santa Cruz features a secure, open bed area which includes a lockable tonneau cover and hidden bed storage. At the same time, these customers still value the secure utility of a compact SUV, with its comfort, passenger space, fuel efficiency and parking ease. Santa Cruz, with its unique, bold design, created an entirely new segment that meets these specific buyer needs like no vehicle before it.
    Everything about Santa Cruz reflects a duality of purpose in its design execution. This all-new category-bending vehicle holds a variety of imagery in balanced juxtaposition:
    Urban life connectivity with escape to outdoor adventure
    Work and play flexibility
    Tough yet alluring demeanor
    Roominess with maneuverability
    Open cargo area and secured, lockable storage
    Towing capability and fuel efficiency

    We just returned from a trip to Disney/Universal, a total of 1110 miles. Average MPG for the trip was 27.8; the highest MGP recorded was 31.3. VERY comfortable ride, plenty of power and more than enough storage space for all our stuff and all the stuff we bought while there. The driving assist modes felt much more refined than on the '19 Tucson we traded in. The cargo bed net (we don't have the bed fence) kept everything very secure in the bed. VERY HAPPY with our Santa Cruz!!

      Sad how Disney has gone woke. Whoops! Got off track! Glad your Santa Cruz performed well! Good luck with it. My 2018 Elantra with a manual transmission and base engine is the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. 126k and all I've done is a wheel bearing, and I went in for an oil change when it was fairly new, and they asked if they could change my thermostat.
      This car is absolutely amazing. Most trouble free car I've owned, even over toyota and honda.Honda. My next vehicle might be a Santa Cruz. I also am looking at a new Kona. I like how those are made in the Ulsan Korea plant. Same place that made my elantra.

    Just picked up the same exact truck...SEL Premium in Phantom Black. I have used it for my daily commute for just a few days but I can say that it is a pleasure to drive, and I can't help but glance back at it with a smile as u am walking away from it. If an El Camino and a Subaru Baja had a child, it would be the Santa Cruz.....all grown up of course! This review is one of the most comprehensive reviews I have ever viewed. Thanks to the content creator for their hard work! I subbed and hit the bell.🙏🏼
    Edit: Got it just in time. We are scheduled to be hit with a Nor'Easter and Bomb Cyclone this weekend so I will get to drive it in deep snow.

    Love ours we got it for Christmas.Exact same one, it’s amazing the turning radius is super, it’s not underpowered and Hyundai has the best support ever, I immediately had email from them on how to use everything and questions. Really well designed and made, you get a lot more for your money than other manufacturers

    I bought the lower engine model with accessories package. I drive tons of miles and hoping does a bit better on gas. Plus it’s a mini truck I don’t care how quick it is. Saved me 3k too. Drove it 200 mile road trip first day I had it. Rolls down highway just fine. Does click down a gear up big hills, but no increased noise or jerkiness.

  • @jnicksnewstart

    You can easily haul 4 by 8 sheets in the Santa Cruz. I verified this in person, less than 2 weeks ago. First you put a couple of two-by-fours in those cross pockets that you pointed out in the bed. Then raise the tailgate partway up and while holding it, remove the tailgate cables (one side at a time) and move them to their higher position on the bottom bolt of the tailgate latch retainer. The tailgate cables now hold the top of the tailgate at the same height as the top of the two-by-fours that you installed in those cross pockets. All you have left to do is secure the sheets so they will not slide out by using tie-downs or rope that can be anchored to the tie downs inside of the bed. You'll also be able to carry a fair amount of items under the sheets at the same time.
    I own an F-350 Crew Cab dual rear wheel that I used in work for many years. I'm not doing that type of work anymore, and don't require the heavy payload and full size 8-foot bed. However, I don't want to give up the versatility of hauling bulky items. I believe the Santa Cruz will fill the niche quite well for me. I was very impressed with its fit and finish and their warranty is better than anybody's right now. I also like the fact that it is not utilitarian inside as I will be using this as a daily driver. To put things into perspective, the money saved on fuel alone will nearly make the payment on the Santa Cruz.

    • @d2mini
      @d2mini Před 2 lety

      @John Dough This is obviously not for people in the truck market. No one is cross shopping this with an F-150. It's only real competitor in the USA is a Ford Maverick, which came out after this. It's for the average urban homeowner who occasionally needs to do some home improvement, gardening, etc but doesn't want to drive a truck every day. This vehicle is based on the Tucson, which starts at $30k whereas this Santa Cruz starts at less than $25k. If you look at what you get for 40k fully loaded (all the tech, comfort and handling) it's comparable to other cars in that price range.

    For any 4x8 sheet you just need to set the tailgate at a angle with the two tailgate cables set to the top notch then a 4x8 sheet will rest flat on the wheel arches and tailgate,
    I've been looking at the Santa Cruz to replace my FJ Cruiser 14 year old FJ. I've always liked the more unusual vehicles like the Toyota FJ toyota fj cruiser, Subaru Baja, and the Mazda RX8.
    I'm not a huge fan of the centre console looks a bit cheap shiny piano black it's going to show every bit of dust and fingerprints. But I do like it has a gear stick and not buttons.
    I wonder if Hyundai do a hybrid version since it's almost the same powertrain as a the Tucson ?

  • @toddbroeker8683
    @toddbroeker8683 Před 3 lety +10

    Mike, I love your reviews and your coverage of this sharp, black Santa Cruz is fantastic and thorough! However, you missed one critical detail about loading plywood and having support. You can reposition the tailgate cables, so it’s angled and will support the plywood, at the same level as the cutouts over the wheel arches! Hyundai thought everything through…

    First reviewer that commented on the poor rear visibility. I was pretty surprised how I couldn't see much behind me when trying to back out. That rear sliding window makes it worse alright. Would have to mostly just use the cameras likely. Funny that the info screen is different on each model. The plain SEL has huge knobs for the volume and fan speed while the Premium has no knobs or scrollers. I honestly think I might like the top model screen with no knobs and bigger screen for viewing maps better.

    He said under the hood is insulated and I think he means that it’s a fire blanket where if the engine catches on fire it’ll melt the pins that’s located under the hood which will enable the fire blanket to drop over the engine , smothering out the fire. It’s not insulation.

    Hyundai is really good with exterior styling lately. Can't believe those rear door armrests. Not going to be very comfortable. Perhaps a higher trim level would include padded arm rests for the rear seat passengers? Rear seat room seems very limited. Perhaps they consider it more a place for extra cargo and only for occasional use for people. The A/C was probably also limiting the acceleration. I've never driven a dual clutch type automatic transmission that I liked. They don't seem to operate as smoothly as a torque converter or CVT.

    Very thorough review. Especially the infotainment, this trim does have a few buttons after all. But interior with so much plastic is cheap for a “premium” trim, no soft touch even on the arm rests? They could take a few more cues from the Telluride or Santa Fe. Adding The leather and Stereo upgrade with 20” wheels makes all the difference. A larger back seat would be good. And you cannot see well out the rear so they should have blind spot and cross traffic standard all trims like they had to do with the Stinger. I’m tempted to wait for 2nd year and see what Hyundai decides to improve in these areas.

They don't have a good track record when it comes to reliability and quality. Not really sure about the longevity of that dual clutch. I wonder what kind of maintenance it will need, i.e. how often you should be changing the fluid. Looking forward to when you can see how the Ford Maverick compares. 👍

Their Quality/Fit n Finish is far better than ALL those makes mentioned. Check out JD Power & Associates for their rankings on the Quality/Reliability rankings. The front turn signal at night could be confused for left or right indication...form over function...poor design.
    Did they fix the rear signal indication they had earlier?
    They should offer this in a more base price to compete with Maverick.
    Overpricing options are not what economical buyers are looking for
    Design is very user friendly overall and that will make it functionally competitive.
    Though I do think it needs to have a hybrid/mpg boost to it so they lean towards transitioning to EV for their timid customers so they have a learning connection with their customers.

    'Lots of SEL Premium and Limited reviews online, but I have yet to notice a review of a lower trim level Santa Cruz with the standard, non-turbo engine and conventional 8-speed automatic trans. It seems as though Hyundai is being evasive about showing it, going for a stronger first impression with the more-luxurious, higher trims.

    • @B_noJ

      I bought the SEL but wanted the SE. They are both loaded! Couldn't see myself spending $10k to $15k more for only a few more options that I could live without, lol. The 2.5Lna engine has enough power for what I need. All models come standard with the driver assist options...

    Excellent! I have too wonder about buying a so called SUV or truck with a shit 4 cylinder. Ford Ranger is also 4 cylinder. They are working over time to give the consumer less for alot $ more. Premium is a 4 cylinder with a turbo to have some power. Not for me. Thanks good job.

    Overpriced, no rear cup holders, no rear vents or usb ports, 4.5ft bed the Ford Maverick is gonna outsell this truck by a mile. I see Hyundai discounting this truck and also making changes to the bed and interior sooner than later.👎

    • @reygone776
      @reygone776 Před 3 lety +2

      There are plus and minus on the car. One advantage of Santa Cruz vs Maverick is the bed doesn’t rust and dent. It has hidden bed storage. Styling is better than Maverick which is bland. Better handling and has more safety feature on base trim and many more. I’m getting this since Hyundai has better quality and dependability than Ford. In fact, the initial quality result this year Hyundai is better than Toyota, Ford is far behind.
