I really love these old trucks...
Driving these old trucks makes you appreciate them more and more every time you drive them...
A newer truck is just a luxury with all the gadgets...
But to drive these simple, older trucks gives you a feeling of jumping back in time...!!!!
At least for me it does...!!!

Can't believe I logged onto CZcams this morning and found a brand-new video from you guys! What a great way to start out the day for an old, retired guy. This will be a fun project. How many of ya'll noticed the custom tach on the steering column with the "power shift" needle set at 4500 RPM?

About the time that C30 was made my uncle rolled one that had a box on the back full of plumbing parts when a wheel blew out. A friend purchased the remains and turned it into a camper very similar to this rig. Same color too (it was popular back then.) They had that thing for decades towing a fishing boat all over Michigan and Ontario Canada. Brings back memories!

My parents bought about a 1972 Chevy 3/4 ton pickup with a 350. It looked just about like this C30. When I started college in 1973 they bought a 5th wheel trailer and toured the US. We started an apple orchard in 1980 and it became our farm truck. It served us well for many years. I appreciate what you are sharing as it brings back a lot of memories. Thank you.

On repairing the roof the first step I took on mine was to get ladders on both sides with another ladder across the roof so you're not putting pressure on the roof. The roof vents are just screwed down with a bunch of sealant over the screws but there are a couple on the interior also. There is a clay strip sealant you're supposed to put under the new one. I use a elastomeric roof sealant that you basically just paint on. Then use self-leveling caulking over the screws and any other holes you find. I repaired the roof from the inside and replaced the roof trusses and ceiling panels. I love that truck and I'm jealous. The family of my childhood friend had one that we camped in together.

Probably not what you want to hear: But don't over-think the roof repair. Take it slow enough that you can take pics/vid of the original design and copy it. Then simply re-assemble and seal. When you're rebuilding, use either equivalent, or better (you already knew that though) material/adhesive. Make sure to try to source the original failures and fix them. But you can do this while you're doing the demo.
    I LOVE this RV project!!

Two things to check before you use them on a 52 year old camper: propane piping and electrical wiring and converter. The old power centers in campers this age were crap, and I have found scary wiring particularly to the fridge. I just finished restoring/refurbishing a 1977 camper. Well worth the effort, but in my case the propane line was broken in multiple spots and it had multiple wiring issues.

Goto an RV shop and ask for the sealant for around the vents. It comes in rolls like tape but is a clay type that you use to seal all the edges of the vents and AC. To fix the roof, you'll ned to peel back the outside tin for best results. There should be a layer of plywood covering a framework. Replace the bad wood with a light pine. At your local harware store, in the roofing section wll be rolls of butyl flashing. It's 4-6 inches wide and use that to seal the edges where the plywood meet and then replace the tin.

We live in Mansfield Tx and use it mostly to go to the beaches up and down the Texas coast. Galveston is the closest, so we spend a lot of time there. Our next adventure is the week before Labor Day. The first new truck, I remember going with my parents to pick up at the dealership (the dealership was in Pontiac Michigan) was a 1967 Chevrolet Suburban. I still remember the smell of the Ziebart under coating. The Suburban did not have a strong Big Block & Turbo 400 like your very cool truck, it had a 283 and a 2 speed Power Glide. That didn’t stop my dad from pulling a 21 foot travel trailer all over the western United States! I was 8 years old, it was a fantastic trip, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado we even hit your home state on our way home! My parents are both gone now, they gave us so many memories. I am currently building a 1968 Chevrolet C-10, just scored a 1970 396, it’s at the machine shop. When you start that Big Block, my heart rate goes up!
I love the camper, however you guys have a tough job ahead, fixing the rotten wood. My first camper had the same issue, I had to take off the outside sheet metal and fix the 2X2 skeleton, it was a lot of work but I never regretted it. My wife and I camped in a tent for years, the first trip in that camper felt like a class A motor home! I hope you don’t sell her! So looking forward to the restoration! Sorry for the long story. God Bless you both, I really enjoy your channel.

I have replaced dozens of camper/trailer/motorhome roofs. You need to remove the old roof to do it right. The roof should be made of tapered 2x4's and basically be a drop in panel that you can build on the ground, put the inside roof panels on then set it on the sidewalls.. Oh ! Boy ! I'll start by saying it can be done but first you need to understand your enemy is condensation aluminum ! It loves to condensate during temp swings, over the years you are now seeing the damage caused by this process ! This has lead to the use of fiberglass in motor homes let alone the cost!!! Don't worry fiberglass also dose the same just not as bad!! I did a 1983 keystone Toyota In the late 90's ! peeled off the entire roof and ceiling replace all of the rotted roof rafters squared the roof and replaced it with 1/4" sub flooring the having the entire roof and over lapped the walls 2 to 3 inches with 3/8" of spray on bed liner with a UV rated paint on top one coat it lasted ten years but then condensation came back into play but we lived in the northeast P.A. and it was exposed year round to the weather and not used as much !! the secret to motor homes are controlled storage or a dry and regular climate !! Oh by the way my adventure started with the sagging air conditioner!!! Good luck ! it can be done , love the content I was young once and enjoyed the adventure of doing the unthinkable your never to old to learn!!! keep the faith!!!

You guys need to do the roof repair. That rig is worth the effort. Just basic carpentry for the most part.
An oscillating saw is a must and guard against electrolysis when reskinning.

I bought my 89' Dodge Pheonix so I can camp out at Road America on race weekends. Totally awesome, nothing better than a day of awesome racing & beer followed up by an evening of campfire dinners & nightly drink of Brandy & Ice Tea . I love the sound of your 70' 396 C-30. My Pheonix has the 360 CUI (5.9L), but is very quite. I think she crying for some Glass Packs. Enjoy your camping weekends.

I’m sure Aaron already knows this but low is not a synchronized gear in those old granny 4 speeds. Put it in second or third before going to low and it’ll fall right in with out all the grinding. Love the truck.

Broken Bow Oklahoma has some cool camp grounds below the dam. Canoe rides down the river are fun.

Always shift to another gear before going to 1st or reverse. That applied even when it was brand new.

You can handle the roof. They are not that hard. Campers pretty cool. Rebuild roof add solar and AC. Head to New Braunsfels
