@Lamb Even before that. I mean sure we have classic gangster movies but they all take place in 30s to 80s. I don't remember watching anythnig other than The Sopranos which shows you the mob life in modern age. I think that's why it's different. Because it's difficult to relate to Lucky Luciano while watching Boardwalk Empire because he is a product of a different world, a different era but you can easily relate to Tony Soprano or some other characters in the show.

Fun fact: James Gandolfini, who played Tony Soprano, said that he was often contacted by real members of Organised Crime groups to compliment his authentic performance or give him advice. Most notably he was given advice after the pilot aired to never wear shorts again. This conversation was incorporated into Season 4 of The Sopranos where Carmine tells Tony that, “a Don doesn’t wear shorts.”

Tony looks and sounds so different in season 1 vs all the other seasons. Part of it was Gandolfini's weight gain, but he also developed the sound of Tony's speech, his mannerisms, his signature facial expressions, his breathing patterns and so much more. After a couple of seasons he had it down so perfectly and completely that I couldn't see through it anymore. It made him so believable as a character, and that was one of the things which makes this show so extraordinary.

This is why the cut to black is the perfect ending. It's up to the fewer to decide what happened to Tony. I agree though. He was whacked. Ironically in front of the family he always strived to protect. In real life, there is only one boss that I can think of that died of natural causes, and that was Carlo Gambino. Everyone else that I can think of was either killed or ended up in prison. If James Gandolfini was still alive, I like to think that if David Chase ever decided to make a spin-off or a movie based after the series, Jimmy would've reprised his role as Tony and we find out he actually ended up in jail because of the Carlo thing. At the same time, I wouldn't have wanted it to happen cause it would have ruined the cut to black ending.

Livia Soprano what a character. Nancy Marchand really did a good job as the cold, manipulate, emotionally detached mother. Many good characters and actors/actresses ova there. The role of Tony was written for Gandolfini.
I thought Mad Men was a golden tv-show.
