    I like that gas tank , but I would widen it, to cover the frame rails, and have more capacity, and some Weber carbs would be nice

    • @DeMilo2002
      @DeMilo2002  Před 3 lety +1

      I agree more capacity would be nice. I like the narrowness of the tank. Not saying wider would not be awesome too, I just love the proportions of that tiny tank on that big ass bike. Weber's would be more than nice! They just don't fit with the budget for that bike. I am keeping the cost under $2500 including the original bike cost. Weber's would ultimately put me above that in the end. Thanks for commenting and for watching! More is on the way.

    • @DeMilo2002
      @DeMilo2002  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks for the feedback! I looked at racing bikes from the period. I think the VFR1000 was the look I went for. I put down 2" masking tape on the fender then started drawing with a sharpie. Once I was happy with the shape, I cut with an air powered hacksaw. A band saw or hand saw will work too. Then a 3" grinder to clean up the cut. If your plastic edges end up sort of fuzzy? You can use a small flame like a lighter to remove the fuzz. Just be careful not to melt the new fender. Good luck! I am headed out to the Garage today to get this one closer to being finished. Eyeball it!

    • @DeMilo2002
      @DeMilo2002  Před 2 lety +1

      My thoughts are that the stock suspension rides like a Cadillac, so I left that part alone. Great question! My nephew is the owner now. Been waiting for him to finish his time in the Army to get back to work on it. He might want to do some inverted forks in the future. Or something way cooler than stock. We will let him decide that. My original goal was to complete this thing with under 1500 bucks just to show people it does not cost a fortune to ride something a little different. We still have a lot to do, but it is still under that number. Best of luck with yours! Share some pictures too, would love to see it!

      I really don't know. I got it off of ebay, advertised as possibly an old Ducati tank. I think it is an old bulltaco dirt bike tank from the seventies or even sixties. I just saw it, liked it and paid the $45.00. I would like to see yours also. We started with the same bike. I would like to see what direction you take it. • @DeMilo2002
      @DeMilo2002  Před 3 lety

      I actually had to weld a couple of bolts on the bottom of the tank. Then added brackets to the frame to catch those bolts. Not recommended unless that tank has been completely cleaned out with soapy water several times. Welding on a gas tank is a bad idea unless you have lots of experience or are willing to put in the work to get it fume free first. Hope that helps and good luck with your project!

  • @joeributaye3449

    What did you do to replace the air filter box? I am in the same situation now

    • @DeMilo2002
      @DeMilo2002  Před 3 lety

      Still deciding on carburation, then we will run what ever works with the carb or carbs we put on. I like the single cone type filters. If the original carbs do go on it for awhile that is what we will use. I made a bracket as a pivot point to mount the stock linkage. It is a sort of z shaped bracket that bolts to the block itself. So if you mock it all up with carbs and linkage, at the linkage pivot point look down and you should see a bolt to mount a bracket. My nephew and I hope to finish it together. He is doing his duty in the army right now so that one is sort of on hold. Hope not much longer on the bike though. it is close. Thank you for asking and for taking the time to watch!

    Is there a certain year goldwing you recommend getting to do the conversion.. say less than 1990 model?

    • @DeMilo2002
      @DeMilo2002  Před 3 lety

      Great question! In the quest to get more things done, the easier route is usually the best route. With that being said, the older the better. The earlier you go the simpler the bike is in design. So for me, the simpler it is the more likely it gets finished. Just find one that runs well and rides well. If you are not well versed in things on the bike, just take your time and do little things first to gain some confidence in your ability. Removing the carburetor airbox on any of the Goldwings is quite a task! It will require some thought and fabrication skills. It gets quite a bit more difficult on the younger ones.

      Avoid the 85-86 GL1200 Fuel Injected years and also the 78-79 GL1000 years. An interstate model 80-82 can work very well. Also 84, 87-88 GL1200. The 89' GL1500 and up uses a ton of relays for auxiliary equipment and eliminating it can prove challenging if you are not Electrically savvy.

      @@chickenfriedrice5119 I forgot to mention I have an 83. But I will not convert mine as I like the dresser style. 83 was the first year of the "Linked" brake system and this year is 100% unique as it was the introduction of the 1200 with those features as well. The front rotors on 83 have 2 different size brake pistons because 1 of them (forgot which one) is linked with your rear brake pedal through a proportioning valve that is no longer available anywhere. Just a warning, not impossible to overcome but a tad challenging. Converting it back to unlinked requires a bit or problem solving and parts, hence, I recommended avoiding that with a cafe by using an 80-82 as most of those parts are the same....ALMOST 82 saw some changes, but, the linked brakes was not one of them.
