- "I had never heard the phrase. I just liked the combination of words... Instead of 'Eat your heart out' or 'I'll get even with you,' it sounded like a good, smart retort to somebody who had hurt your feelings or broken your heart."
- Songwriter Arthur Hamilton.
First published in 1953 and released by Julie London in 1955, Cry Me a River was originally intended to be sung by Ella Fitzgerald in the film Pete Kelly's Blues. The films director was Jack Webb. Jack Webb's wife, Julie London contacted Arthur Hamilton (who was an old school friend) as Jack was looking for new songs for the sound track of the film.
The song never made it onto the film, however Julies version of the song, backed by Barney Kessel on guitar and Ray Leatherwood on bass began gaining attention. A performance by London on the 1956 film 'The Girl Can't Help It' helped make the song a hit, reaching #9 on the US and #22 on the UK singles charts.
On this recording I used a 1946 RCA 74b ribbon microphone for vocals and a Telefunken U47 to capture ambient guitar and double bass.
The guitar is a Gibson L5 with Charlie Christian pickup plugged into a Fender Tweed Twin. The double bass is an Engelhardt M1 with gut strings.
The old style visuals are from an old 1956 Zeiss Flektogon Lense on a Cannon EOS R6 camera.
Post production done in Pro Tools and Davinci Resolve - Hudba
Absolutely wonderful. Proving a man really can sing this. Great bass too 🎵🎶🎸❤️
