  • This is MTV recorded in the fall of 1983. I had to pull all the videos out, but everything else it there, from the commercials, promotions, and that famous lift-off at the top of the hour.

You have no IDEA how wonderful it is to watch an MTV episode without ever hearing the words Kanye, Kardashian, Perry, Gaga, Bieber, Beyonce, Teen Mom & Jersey shore, followed by someone trying to make us believe just how AWESOME they all are and we should care about them. I would be SO happy if MTV would put out a channel that's dedicated to playing the old broadcasts just as they were. Or even just a website with everything uploaded. So many memories for so many people and there would be a chance for those of us who missed the early years to enjoy it. It's upsetting to me that so little of it is actually available.

Missy Minx - that’s not going to happen. they’ve buried all of this with new management. Same management as Bet, the change in what aired is evident of that time. vh1 and mtv have warped into Bet. Vh1 would still air behind the music in the 2000s but no more since. No luck unfortunately.

What a great time to be entering adulthood 1982. The 70s were so stale. Pretentious rock bands and then Disco. In the 70s You had to wear your clothes a certain way everyone had to have their hair a certain way. When the 80s started it was like I could breathe. It was okay to have fuschia hair. The bands were weird. Their sound was new and different. And they were not taking themselves too seriously. Everything was so new and different. Video games went from pong to more sophisticated. The home computer was right around the corner. And the future looked so bright you had to wear shades😎🕶
There was a new musical Trend every 3 months and it just kept changing. Until about 1987. Compact discs were new then laserdiscs. And suddenly cable TV was everywhere with a hundred channels.📺📀💿📼
And VCR tapes readily available so you can watch whatever you wanted when you wanted. The technology was so exciting. What a great time to be a young man🎶🎵🎸

I was in Daytona Beach for spring break in 1986. This was the first time MTV was doing live broadcasts from spring break. I was a broadcast major at the time so I spent my days watch the crew at work as well as Martha Quinn. Before she went on one afternoon I said "hello" to her and she "hi there" back to me. She was my favorite MTV VJ.

Back when music television was fun and everybody wasn't bickering with each other about everything.
I enjoy my life now. I've travelled around the world, I've seen and done many incredible things. I'm extraordinarily lucky. But if I could go back to those days, back to when MTV started, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I was broke, undecided about what I wanted to do, had a car, an old Buick convertible, a cute girlfriend and some real good buddies. We spent our time dreaming about what we were going to do in the future, where we were going to go. We hung out, practiced using nanchuks in the backyard like a bunch of idiots, played Atari in the basement and watched MTV - or at least had it on in the background. We partied, drove around, explored and went to beach. I can't think of a single time we argued about anything, and certainly not about the current president, or anything political for that matter. We didn't argue about what foods we should eat, or what words we shouldn't say so as not to offend anyone. We just lived our lives and enjoyed ourselves, together as pals. We were in it for the fun. And we had tons of it.
I find today to be too angry, too depressing and everyone so preoccupied with being politically correct, and monitoring others' behavior like some sort of social thought police, it's sickening. When they're not doing that they're head down into their smartphones, so absorbed with their digital lives, they've forgotten how to actually live. Back when MTV started, music was awesome, different, very creative and no two bands or singers sounded a like. Today, they all sound so similar, do the same dance moves, all trying to be Hip Hop without being Hip Hop. Sad, really. Sure, there's great music being produced, but you have to hunt for it, unlike back in the 80s, it was the mainstream music. Alternative New Wave with the second British Invasion which included Punk, was now mainstream. It was on the radio, it was on MTV... all the time. Amazing, really, when you think about it. Every band, every singer was fun to watch.
We thought it would last forever, but it lasted a mere decade. When the 90s hit, the mood changed, music was getting angry, Hip Hop was taking over and the fun was gone. The culture reflected that. Some people like to say that the music only represents what's happening in the culture. Well, I think that's backwards. Music influences people like nothing else, more than school, more than parents, more than movies or reading or anything.
Now, back to work on my time machine in the garage. ;)

And make me feel so old! The Coty musk ad in particulary was a particular favorite. I thought it was both campy and ridiculous but titilating at the same time! HA HA HA! One thing about MTV back in the day was you got a real mix of stuff. You could be into Judas Priest and sit there all day watching Michael Jackson and Rockwell and Madonna and the Ramones and Ultravox and Rick James and The Hooters and Gary Numan and Springsteen waiting to see "You've Got Another Thing Coming". New Wave, punk, pop, metal, it was all there (well, not country if that was your jam). It gave everyone in every clique that one thing in common, we knew each other's music at least a little bit because we all watched MTV. I think that was unique to the '80s thanks to MTV.

Fall of 1983 I was still an infant so have no memory of this but I grew up hearing all these songs and am thankful I got to experience MTV when it was still music television
Some people say it died in 1992 when the The real world premiered but I disagree. In my preteen years (93-94) they still played a ton of music videos especially during the day. Then around 5pm would air some shows then late night had beavis and butthead, aeon flux, singled out, headbangers ball and then music videos all night. Weekends I usually avoided MTV as I remember they would just rerun entire seasons of The real world and road rules but at least for the most part MTV was still music. Early 00s was when it started going downhill for me. I wasn't into the jackass stuff, pimp my ride or any of those type of shows. Music videos were far and few in between and it seemed to have lost something besides just the music. Strange to think that theres a generation out there who only know MTV for shows like Jersey shore and 16 and pregnant.
