Sheep Farming: Weaning Suffolk Lambs

- čas přidán 3. 04. 2023
- Today at Ewetopia Farms, we bit the bullet and weaned our January-born Suffolk lambs. This involved separating the lambs from the ewes, moving the ewes out to another barn, and reconfiguring pens for the new groups of sheep.
Sheep and sheep farming is our passion and we hope that the love we have for what we do is obvious to you the viewers. Our operation is a large scale, registered Suffolk and Poll Dorset sheep farm combining the best of pasture and confinement to manage the flock for maximum comfort, minimal stress, and producing a consistent, very high quality product. Our focus is on providing breeding stock for sale to other sheep producers. All our sheep are treated with the utmost compassion which I think will become evident as you join us on our daily rounds on our working sheep farm in eastern Ontario, Canada.
I hope you enjoy this video. If you would like to follow along with us and experience life on a real live sheep farm on a daily basis, please subscribe so that you don't miss a single episode!
Thank you for taking the time to watch! We love to hear from you so be sure to leave a comment as well.
Thank you!

I love how friendly your sheep are even the rams are so nice & come up to you for a fuss just like cats & dogs do , it just proves how nicely you treat them , like all of them are your personal pets , thank you😊
That's the problem, they all ARE our personal pets so I am attached to everyone!😆
The slo mo of the Dorsets, for some reason, reminds me of the Budweiser Clydesdales😊 The girls have very nice movement! You have a cracking group of January Suffolks. I loved the way the 5 lined up for you. Great video!
Good morning Leonard! 🐑
😁

Good morning! 🌹🌹🌹
Good morning!
Lambs look fantastic 👍🏻
Good morning Arnie and Lynn. A busy shuffling day on the farm. Hard to believe that it is weaning time and the lambs have grown into such beauties. There really are sone stand outs in the crowd. I love the way they stop to watch what you are doing. Buddy loves the sheep and soon they will appreciate their mascot. Thelma and Louise are such adventurers. They will miss that barn. Fun to see a visitor come and get peanuts fleece. I bet she enjoyed feeding Leonard. A great name for a ram. Watching the ewes have a little romp was great because inside they are still lambies at heart. Tammy is a perfect example. She is grown up but she tells you she is still your baby. As do those big boys greeting you at the gate. Lots of love on ❤your farm. Big hugs to wonderful shepherds. 🥰🥰🥰🥰
I just can't believe how quickly time passes! It is still cold here but in a few weeks we'll be planting crops!🥰🥰🥰🥰
That is a georgeous group of Suffolk lambs!!!! I would love to have them all!!!😍😍🥰🥰
Thanks 🙂
All your sheep look so good especially considering the winter we had! Such good care!👏👏👏
The boys greeting you at the ram gate 💯🐑 They really do love their owners, It's sad that people want to call them unintelligent animals 💔 They are smart beautiful creatures....!!!!!!
Yes 🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑🐑 are very clever I have got some
Hurts my feeling when folk say they are stupid
Thanks Lynn for the experience. You could bottle it and sell it. Lovely sheep.
Thanks!
I love how calm and so little drama & trama for moms and babies… it feels way more natural, everyone is ready for it; good change management! 😄.
The way your farm handles weaning is the best I’ve seen.
Thanks. There was a lot more mayhem with it today as we worked with the Dorsets! So never talk too soon!😆
Jethro and Kodiak are so gentle and personable. In fact I love 💕 that all of your sheep (ewes, lambs and rams) seem so friendly. I loved yesterday’s video with everyone frolicking in the sunshine. Barns are marvellous for Winter protection and lambing; however, as natural grazers, I really think it is cruel to keep them constantly in a barn, especially when it IS possible for them to be allocated ‘sunshine time’. I get that economics are important, you are ultimately running a business but cruelty because of more profit is not acceptable. Your animals’ love for you and Ernie is obvious, so nice to see. Thanks for the videos for us poor ‘non-sheep farmers!’
Thanks, Linda. I feel the same way. We want to give the sheep the very best lives we can possibly give them. Profitability will never take precedence over sheep welfare. They have a tough enough life working for us. The least we can do is make their time here as pleasurable as possible, and that includes lots of petting, going outdoors, having play areas, etc. It is the least we can do🙂
Hey Lynn, Gooood Morning. WoW, I'm here 1st!! I got your video after it posted. 28 seconds after, here I am waiting to go to sleep. I don't do it on purpose, but l always check for a "Ewetopia" video before I go to sleep!!! Boy it was windy today!! I could hear the sound of the wind so clearly blowing in my speakers, well not clearly but nippy & pushy. You feel like saying, HEY STOP IT!!! LoL. What a kool video, excellent vid quality & clear as a bell! "Visiter on today's Lamb Show".🐑🐏 ❣🌴
They say counting sheep helps you sleep!😆 Hope you had nice dreams
@@EwetopiaFarms Lol, I wish.
Cute when Buddie thought you were only talking to him
the lambs are looking good! Luther has gotten big. Thelma and Louise are at it again. wonder if their friend will get a name? thank you so much for another great day on your farm!
I always chuckle when i hear the familar voice of Buddy before you see him on video, he's just a character, love him!!!❤❤
Hey again Lynn, The surprise visitor today got to feed the bottle lambie, I'm jealous!! Nah. Just dreaming it was me. The January rams looked awesome! How many are you keeping? That was surprising, the Mama's didn't call to their lambs & the Lambs didn't miss their mom's. How RUDE! LoL
Not sure how many we are keeping. Economy is struggling.I am expecting sales to be down this year so we will probably need to make more hard decisions
@@EwetopiaFarms You have to think positive!! I pray that more people will want to buy your sheep to feed their own families or to start raising their own.
@@mariacambre8971 thanks but it is a worry 😟
The lambs look great. you take wonderful care of them. Good job. Hope you are feelihg better.
Thank you 🙂
Morning! 🐑 Do I remember correctly that weaning is at three mo? How old are they when you separate ewe lambs from ram lambs? So fun to see Bonny there.
It’s so interesting the little differences between lambs that make them identifiable. Luther has lower ears and a narrower head.
Ewe and ram lambs will be separated in a few days probably. It is on our to do list
Excited to see the suffolk ram keeper pen - lots of nice looking ones in there 🤩 that one near the end is sure thick - wow!
You are looking for a yearling though right?
Nope I’m looking for a lamb! 😁
Kia ora 👋🏾, from us here in New Zealand
Hi New Zealand! Thanks for joining us in Canada!
❤
I was watching a sheep film on the biggest meat sheep last night and I seen Arnie in shorts showing his legs off glad to know that you breed the heavyest one's
Yes, someone else told us about that one too. 🙂
Great videa.
Glad you enjoyed it
BTW. I had a wonderful birthday. My girlfriend spoiled me. But I was very happy with your birthday wishes too. ❤❤❤
I'm glad!😁🥰🥰
❤Lynn ❤Arnie Now I Know You guys are just "Good People" even without Sheep 🐑 Also Arnie🥂 Thank-you for explaining how you assess 🦾desired behavior say in 🐐 chewing Cud I thought🏋 💭 you birthed 😮some Renegades🐑🐐 😂 and I am not talking Thelma and Louise 🤔Well😏maybe 😊
Thanks for your extremely colorful comments 😁😁🥰
I would like to see a video on comparing between keepers, salers and market lambs.. have like a mini lamb show so, we can compare the whole animal. You give us bits & pieces, which is great but, I want to see the whole picture... I know there's just 2 of you but, use your tripod for the line up shots.... just saying.
Thank you for your wonderful videos and keep talking to your lambies. ❤🐏🐑
Maybe in a future video. Right now we are too busy. However, it just so happens that in tomorrow's video, I do talk about picking out our keepers. I show examples of good and bad as they are standing side by side. It is a start!🙂
@@EwetopiaFarms yes, that would be lovely 💕 can't wait until the next video.
Just one question? Why Arnie didn't put the bedding down when there weren't sheep in it? So he could do this without interferings of the sheep...
Hello, Bonny... nice to see you in Lynn's video. And Lennart is a good name...
I am jealous of Bonny... ow dear in ewetopia...
Yes, usually he does but we got busy and I think he forgot!😄
I have not spotted your old ewe (Sally?) Is she okay?
Yes, she is in with the youngest group of lambs now 🙂
Great Update 😅
🤍🤍🤍
I want to import to India..can you send please
No, we don't export to India
Is there a phone # if someone wants to buy ?
send me an email and I will be sure to get back to you
So let me guess.... you name the ones... you are thinking you are keepers.....???
Yes. That's why I tell people that I don't really want to name anyone before we've made our final selections.
@@EwetopiaFarms Names are important.... and when one names something, it is almost a point of acceptance and possession. I saw the look in your eyes when she asked you about the name and wanted to name the lamb.... it was like uh... what do you do/say now...??? That is when the light went on.... about keepers and trying to keep the non-keepers impersonal.... because otherwise you would constantly be heartbroken.
@Jamie Pittman exactly. Naming becomes way to personal and it is upsetting enough already for me sending lambs to market 😌
