- People of all ages cycle in the Netherlands. Making the streets safe enough for people from the age of 8 to 80 is not something to strive for but already a reality. This video focuses on the more senior and the very young cycling in the Netherlands. You don't have to look hard. Older people and children are everywhere. In fact the typical cyclists in other countries (fit males aged 20-35) are underrepresented in the Netherlands, other age groups are far more visible.
And here in the United States people laugh at me because I am enjoying my bike they think I am cheap to buy a car. I do have a car but I prefer to ride my bike most of the time. The freedom, the fun and the exercise that you get from a bike is incredible.
Given the US road conditions for bicycles and traffic rules … I applaud you!
Here it is normal the CEO of a company arrives at his bike. Even the king and the prime minister are cyclists.
Its just the fastest and most easy way to go from A to B.
If I were to ride a bike to work, it would take about 90 minutes to go 16 miles. (Big hills and lots of traffic lights.) Funny thing is that on some days by car it takes me over an hour.
I feel the same. I realy love biking. And I have no car. 😉
Haha, same! I once had a really nice neighbor offer to give me some gas money as I returned with groceries on my bike because he couldn't figure out why I was riding my bike places instead of driving. 😀❤️
There is something elegant about a Dutch person on a bike. It is the upright riding position, no rush, no sweat... so casual and "laid back."
That's the way we like it, aha aha aha ahhhhaaaaaaa🤡🤠💃🤸♂️👍👋!
Kind regards from Kobus the Netherlands 😁
I live in a car dependent USA city. It was very sad seeing my grandparents lose mobility freedom when they could no longer drive. They were still physically mobile, but the infrastructure and development pattern was incredibly hostile to alternatives to driving. Without family around and people that could be the drivers the social isolation would’ve been severe.
That’s why I moved to a Pedestrian and somewhat Bike Friendly town in Mexico. In my 70’s.
One of the great, and often overlooked benefits of cycling infrastructure. You see a lot of mobility scooters here. People with disabilities, but also older people use them who no longer can or want to drive and don't have the physical condition to ride a bike. czcams.com/video/xSGx3HSjKDo/video.html
As a dutch living abroad this makes me homesick
Dat zou ik ook echt hebben!
Same here. But when I'm there and had my 'fix', after 10 days I'm ready to go back to my U.S. home.
🌷
Those dutch upright bicycles are gorgeous.
Beautiful. This is the way it should be everywhere.
I agree.
People from Denmark might disagree cause they think they are more bike friendly even though they only have one city that's really bike friendly 😂
🤝
For that to happen all land needs to be flat, everywhere...
@@mvl6827 no, stamina dude
I don't think that I saw as much as one obese person in this video; also, the older people are obviously in good health, because it takes some agility and co-ordination to cycle a bike. This is the way all of the World should go, it's healthy for people and the environment!
In my country, no way. Too much hills bro.
@@Davey97 electric bikes work fine as well. And the youth and able bodied people could still get around by bike fine too.
That is because the netherlands has the SECOND LOWEST HEART DISEASE record of 30 advanced countries!

It's not stupid it's even rather safe. And don't forget we start to cycle here the moment we know how to move our legs. My three year old grand nephew is racing around on his bike as if it's the most easiest thing ever. Don't compare your 'oh geez that's so dangerous country and we're so afraid' with our country. We're not that hysterical.
never bet on the heli/lawnmower parents
It’s not stupid at all, it’s normal for the Dutch. I wish the UK would adopt your thinking and ideas regarding a cycling culture.
Yes, the Dutch, they do not only ride their bikes everywhere & all over the Netherlands, but they also belong to the most condescending and toe-curling people around.

This has to be the most pleasant and relaxing video I have seen in a long time. Certainly for cycling. I think I feel more at peace with the world having watched it. It's a way of life!
It will have been interesting to know how many of those folks are alive since that period...a healthy society
What a beautiful country, people aged 70 or 80 years driving bicycles, here in Poland I have never seen that :(
Love the Dutch kids on their little bikes, trying to keep up, little legs moving like crazy, great to see these little hero's :-)
3:50, someone stole their little sisters bike :p
lol, it's actually quite common for asians to ride colorful and tiny bikes
This was beautiful. I stead of drowning us in a self serving narration you put to what fit best in that part of the universe, classic music. I wouldn’t t mind if you did a few more in this fashion.
its Me Its kinda like watching people dance. Its synchronized and fluent. But if you are dutch you see the little signals people that don't know them don't notice...like the steps in a dance recital.

Giving birth in the Netherlands is a difficult job. First the newborn, no issue... Then the bike, my God, those women suffer so much. When I moved to the South of Europe my parents asked a few times: "How's it going". No concern while selling furniture and tools. One day I said:" I sold my bike", both looked in amazement and said: "You are really going now aren't you"? An American without a car is as rare as a Dutch without a bike. A few months ago I finally got my second bike... One for shopping, one for fun and speed.
"little children in very unsafe contraptions" Where did you see those? 'cos there are none in this video. Everything you saw in this video is perfectly safe and legal in the Netherlands.
I bet there is a not stopping for red light violation

Great common sense, thank you holand, less oil wars, less air polution (poison), more savings, better health! Thank you for showing the world it can be done!

I own a Indian MOTORCYCLE, a Royal Enfield Interceptor Chrome! And it's fantastic 👍
I like all the videos from "BicycleDutch" but this is my favorite. It really captures the Dutch attitude to safe, clean, healthy transportation.
I love Netherlands, I hope i can live there. It is simply beautiful country and I love biking all weather, anywhere.
Love my country.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I miss you Netherland.😥
Where do you live now and why did you leave Netherlands
No wonder Dutch people are the happiest people on Earth.
And healthiest people on the earth too
I love the way the youngsters cycle responsibly. I also loved the music.

is beautiful and relaxing to see how this People enjoy cycling.
Sometimes it's not enjoying, just doing.
Well, to me it's enjoying.
I have to use my company car to commute to work every day.
So in the weekends i ride my bike. For fun excersize and relaxation.
And i really enjoy it!
Furthermore, like a true Dutchie, i have two bikes.

It's not just the wonderful cycle infrastructure there is in the Netherlands that I love watching, but also the relaxed and plodding way they cycle. It relaxes me just to watch them. I suppose give it another 20 years and we might have something halfway decent to encourage people to cycle more here in the UK. By then I will be too old to enjoy it.
Not if Jeremy Clarkson has anything to say about.

To me, it’s more than that. It’s the best town and city planning in the world that makes it a paradise even for those that don’t cycle regularly. The indirect societal benefits are massive.
0:44 Dude casually passes with no hands on the handlebar and in his coat pockets. Oh yes, we are pros. :)
i think most people in there teens and twenties can ride without hands in the netherlands, for long stretches of road i also often do it, or when its cold and i forgot my gloves, turns are pretty easy, breaking without hands is the issue XD
Even my 9 year old son knows how to ride without hands.
This used to be not allowed as far as I can remember. But I think it is allowed now.
Not if you have a coaster brake (like many Dutch bikes). You brake with your feet.
On a dutch bike, doing this is simple as the neck is tilted back at a much greater angle than on other bikes. I ride both types and can ride with no hands on the dutch bikes, but not on the average mountain / hybrid bike.
@ 3.32 min. these lads kind of bump into each other, manage to stay upright and continue smiling. Love it !!
Also : I have not seen any helmets , don't need to, evrybody is relaxed and mindful . Fantastic .
Do away with bubble wrap protection here in N-America , soooo overprotected.
We are all cycling very close together. So, wenn we fall, there is always, left or right, someone to break your Fall💃🤸♂️😂🤭🤠🍺!

3:08 He still there? Yes, he is.
Nathalie K 😂
Yes exactly ... sometimes it's too quite because your toddler falls asleep, and you just want to be sure he's still there :)
I like how riders cycle in a gentle manner, not like in London where most cyclists race to work in their speedos
You can compare it to riding a car vs race car driving...also not a good idea to do on a public road. In the netherlands we have 2 words "fietsen" (meaning cycling...in your normal clothes...at normal speeds...doing everyday things)....and "wielrennen" (speed cycling...done for sport...lycra and helmet wearing). But cycling is just a normal form of transportation here.
The result of lacking infrastructure probably. If i were to be thrown in the mix with fast motor traffic i would probably be dressed for battle too. Give people safety and their behavior will change for the better :-)
i apreciate your country for cycling !!!
This has got to be one of the happiest places on Earth

Over here in Canada the thinking is ass-backwards . People think the reason why you are riding a bike is because you can't afford to buy a car or you have drinking and charge and your licience is suspended. Thè dutch are real cool people and thanks for treating pot-heads with respect and kindness .
We'd probably still be under nazi occupation if it wasn't for you guys, so there's that...
It's the other way round: we have and ride a Car and yet we can afford a bicycle dispite that👍🤭😂!
Kind regards from Kobus the Netherlands 😁!
Some bikes are more expensive than cars. My husband has a high speed padilec (Stromer), for long distance commuting 30km one way each day. Those bikes range from 6000 to 10000 euro's.
Beautiful and I got motivated by cyclists.
Love you all ❤️👍🇮🇳
I love my car & use it almost everyday (it has air conditioning and today is expected to reach 40°C / 104°F) but I still wish I had the OPTION to take my bike.
Bicycle lanes here in Slovakia simply don't exist, and the drivers are maniacal. I always give cyclists as much room as possible, but not every driver here does the same.
The cyclist injury/death statistics are grim, but it doesn't have to be this way - if only governments & councils used a thing called planning.
Imagine how much saver the roads would be if half of the people driving a car weren’t unpredictable, frightened, blind and reacting slow?
With all respect…☝️👵
My 76yo dad prefers biking but he drives the car relatively well and is quit predictable I’d say.
Apart from leaving his indicator on until he has to use it again.😅
But my mom who is panicky and not as confident behind the wheel was unpredictable and simply dangerous.
She sold her car after 3 incidents and a whiplash in 1 year, because she has alternatives.
And I’m grateful that she has that FREEDOM!!
i wish my city (london) was more like this. implementing more and safer cycle routes is the first and best step to get people cycling not just promoting the "healthier, cleaner, greener" slogans.
It's great to see children and the elderly using their bikes calmly and safely.
Kids on bikes in my country run fast without looking around. They need to know that they are not professional cyclists!
And the old people sometimes drive too slowly because they don't have enough pedaling power.
Accidents often occur due to lack of attention and not being able to see cars or pedestrians.
I want drivers in my country to know that most accidents can be prevented by always looking to the left and right no matter what they are driving and being careful at all times.
Compared to the rest of the world the Dutch should be regarded philosophers in this regard. it may take years and years for other nations to estimate what this nation is doing, and follow suit.
These Dutch Bicycles are built solid and stronger. Wow
Yes that is right, the Netherlands is known for its solid quality.
And yet I break one every 2-3 years. :P

I came to see this video just by coincidence. I saw people cycling. And I thought : "how boring, they can just as well show a video of grass growing!" But then I read the comments and was made to believe that it was very special and unique. So tomorrow I will watch the cycle traffic in my (Dutch) hometown with different eyes.
My Dutch friends had the same attitude as you, until I took them for a ride in London, after which they very quickly came to appreciate the genius of their countries road transportation policy & design.
Wonderful video paired with a wonderful tune!
amazing... nice video, watching ur video from Saudi Arabia
Life would be very tough , boring and difficult without having a bicycle in the Nederlands .
I live on the Mojave Desert in Southern California, U.S.A.. I'm 82 and bought an electric bike a few months ago. Sadly the roads around the area in 29 Palms are so dangerous for bike riders that I really can't use my bike the way I had originally planned to use it unless I want to never make it to 83! The roads around my area don't even have shoulders, let alone bike lanes. California now has over 40 million inhabitants, and only a few areas in the state have any safe areas where bike riders are welcomed.
Hey David! Still kicking, biking and alive? Hope so!
Kind regards from Kobus the Netherlands 😁🤸♂️💃👍👋
@@koosmotormuis I’m wondering too 😔
John Rawlins What you seem to miss is that cycling is a completely normal mode of transportation here. Not a sport. In fact most cyclists travel in a very leisurely tempo. Around 10 km/h. Our entire infrastructure and the traffic laws are designed with this in mind. For example: the greater the expected difference between the speed of cars and of cyclists, the more seperation between motor lanes and cycle lanes.
I hate cycling slow so cycling in Netherlands seems awful.
+oreosaysb00 so go faster
lol there is no speed limit on bicycles :)
MeatNinja yes there is only most people don"t know it
Oh that's the first time I hear about that, what's the speed limit?
lol lol .. love it wish we had more bike trails and streets like this here in the usa and Alaska too love it lucky people over there .
Thank you but luck had nothing to do with it. You go after what you want and make it happen or you don't deserve it in the first place. The rest of the world can have this....easily. Enough people just need to want it.
People fought for it to become this way and we're at it for 50+ years now, this isn't something that just happens, plenty of mistakes were made before it even came close to being this good and plenty of mistakes are still being made, and because we are human will continue to be made as we're nowhere near finished yet
You mistake your Trails for actual infrastructure. Trails are an afterthought, something you put in when your actual cycling infrastructure has bones. Those trails are just there because at times you need something out of the way, just to ride. Infrastructure is what you put in place when you want to be less dependent on cars.

Absolutely fantastic
In the UK most cyclists imagine that they are in the Tour de France and ride accordingly.
+philip013 I've never understood that. Even as Londoners take up cycling in huge numbers, I see so many people decked out in crazy outfits with backpacks going at 40km/hr. Did everybody take London 2012 too seriously?
I like that type of fast cycling. If I lived in Netherlands, I would've hated cycling because people are so slow. UK has very limited cycling infrastructure and you have to cycle on the road with cars. It's much more fun to cycle with actual traffic and it's much quicker. Pedestrians walk on cycle paths but no one walks on the road where there are cars.
oreosaysb00 yes because in the you to run fast because is not safe on the roads because they share the same road with bus car truck and Lorry so run for your life before getting hit.in the Nederland all transportation has is owned road run ride or drive with peace no need to worry.

Even during cycling holidays: the Brit spoil the cycling landscape in The Netherlands with their huge, annoying helmets and crazy lycra outfit, obligated by their travel insurance companies.
Helmets give negative connotations to a bicycle, making people think it's dangerous when it's not.

Cycling is a very Dutch way of transportation. It saves money, it's healty and it can be fun. Yhe fun factor depends on the bike you use though. The music is wonderful.
The sight....well, can the US ever catch up? That is the question.
Looks nice to cycle here, unlike the UK where there's quite alot of hostility towards cyclists and in the UK a narrow painted line with parked cars in is considered a cycle lane. The UK is an embarrassment when it comes to cycling infrastructure.
There are lots of video's to be found how the Dutch do infrastructure for bikes, go to your government and demand the right for safe cycling! Check the city of Groningen for instance
Why are people in the UK hostile towards cyclists? They are tax payers and voting citizens too, are they not??

@cyclenut The Dutch are just average drivers, really. It's the infrastructure that seems to make everything work, the people themselves aren't better or worse. For example, in the vast majority of the U.S. it's totally legal for cars to turn right on red. In the Netherlands, it's not.
Logical if there are no cyclists on the right side of the car. Illogical if there are.
