  • Why can’t diabetes management be like we learned in school? That was complicated enough.
Now you’re on your own, and there are so many questions with your patients to manage diabetes. Symptoms that don’t necessarily follow a straight line. All of the elements of managing diabetes that are beyond your control - patient’s motivation, cost of medications, how realistic a plan may be, how long until they can be seen by the specialist that you referred them to -it gets more complex by the minute.
[Spoiler alert: these are not issues faced exclusively by new grads, either; this is the state of play when it comes to working with diabetic patients.]
This week, we have a great interview with Meghan Kavanaugh. She is a Registered Dietitian AND Nurse Practitioner that works exclusively with patients with diabetes. We cover a lot of ground, including:
✅ Taking the stigma out of diabetes and diabetes management
✅ Continuous glucose monitoring - what it is, the double-edged sword that it can sometimes be, and practical tips for patient teaching about it
✅ Tips for the administrative challenge of working with patients with diabetes
✅ Addressing cost for un- and underinsured patients with diabetes
✅ Answers to the questions that YOU submitted
The landscape and tools available for helping patients to manage their diabetes is always changing, and probably always will be. Building a foundation of reduced stigma and improved practicality is a great way to move forward and support your patients with diabetes, and to help them make realistic plans to address their diabetes that will meet their needs - and yours.

Well, I'll tell ya, these two fine ladies are the only medical folk 'round here speakin' in a way we can all understand. Talkin' 'bout the high cost of medicines and such, they sure do show a heap of empathy and care for their patients. It's like findin' a rare gem in a haystack, I tell ya. They're just as genuine and heartfelt as they come. Let me weave you a little tale that I got reminded by these ladies. Down in the heart of a sleepy southern town, there were these two charming ladies, Dr. Sue Ellen and Nurse Betty. They were the kind of medical providers who spoke plain, down-to-earth language that everyone could grasp. One hot summer day, Old Man Jenkins, who'd been strugglin' with the high cost of his diabetes medicine, came into their clinic. He was near 'bout at his wits' end, but Dr. Sue Ellen and Nurse Betty, bless their hearts, they sat right down with him. They talked through every concern, explaining things in a way that made sense, not using those highfalutin medical terms that go over your head. They shared a pot of sweet tea and talked about everything from medication costs to lifestyle changes. It was clear they genuinely cared about their patients, not just as names on a chart, but as real people with real struggles. And that day, Old Man Jenkins left with not just a prescription, but a heart full of gratitude and a newfound understanding of managing his condition. It was folks like Dr. Sue Ellen and Nurse Betty that kept the heart of that little town beating strong. Great job y'all!

Why, bless their hearts, these two lovely ladies are just like angels sent down from heaven, blessin' us all with their sweet wisdom on diabetes. They're as kind as a summer breeze, sharin' their know-how with us folks. It warms my heart to see such generosity. I'm as grateful as a dog with two tails for what they're doin' for us. Truly, they're as rare as hens' teeth, and I can't help but tip my hat to 'em for their good work.
