  • Here I show off and review what I believe to be the best entry level backpacking cook set on the market today. These can be had for around the $30 mark on sites such as amazon.

    Pro Tip: If you want faster boil times, place the cube so it is standing tall. This exposes more of the cube for burning and produces much more heat.

    I carry this little stove in my hiking bag but I have also dumped the Esbit blocks for military issue Hexamine tablets, much better. I have also used an old shoe polish tin, wrapped fire rope around the inside and feed it with methylated spirit (denatured alcohol) and this works really well. Thanks for sharing......

    This is a great review. I love the Esbit folding stoves, and I’m thinking of getting this set. Your review is very helpful.

    Use the fancy feast cup with alcohal inside in place of the tablet. It works!

    Why wait after lighting the tab - that's a waste of energy.

    Is the tray/square holder for esbit tabs screwed/bolted in or riveted in?

    • @arctodussimus6198
      @arctodussimus6198 Před rokem

      It’s riveted. I suppose it could be drilled out. I’ve thought to do that to mine so I can use a Trangia stove inside it

    Thank you. I wonder if a 750 ml Toaks pot would fit?

    Do you think its possible to put a sterno stove instead of the tablet as fuel ?

    Can you burn small sticks and such if you run out of the tabs?

    • @scottparrish8566
      @scottparrish8566 Před 7 lety

      I just tested the support legs with a soldering iron set to 800F (450C) and they marked a bit but were otherwise fine. My guess is they'd be fine with a fire of small sticks. Otherwise everything else on the stove is metal.

    • @scottparrish8566
      @scottparrish8566 Před 7 lety +1

      After checking campfire temps on the googler, I had to come back and retest the legs at 900F (480C), the max temp of my soldering iron. Other than the aforementioned marks there were no issues with melting/burning. Pretty sure you'll be fine with small sticks.

      Of course you can, why wouldn't you? I do that all the time even if I'm not out of tabs. It increases efficiency and the water will boil a lot faster if you combine fuel tabs with twigs.

    just bought this stove tonight at dicks sporting goods it was on sale for 20 couldn't go wrong. I have the foldable one and that one in my opinion works not bad especially in a pinch. great review.

      They really are great, I use the pot a lot by itself without the burner just because its the perfect size for a cup of tea or coffee.

    The stove has changed some since you made this video. It now has a silicon coated tab on the lid, and you get no Esbit tablets with it.
    But, please, get rid of that silly cat food "stove". Those things are dangerous, and have caused hundreds of accidents. Buy a real alcohol stove before you get hurt, or worse, before you start a fire that destroys a forest, and maybe a lot of homes along with it.
    Get caught with a homemade alcohol stove in my area when there's an open fire ban, and you'll get slapped with a huge fine, and rightfully so. There have simply been too many accidents caused by homemade alcohol stoves.
    It's easy to use a Trangia with this stove, or you can just buy the model made for both Esbit tablets and an alcohol stove, which makes a lot more sense. For ten bucks above what this set costs, you get an extra pot, and you get an Esbit alcohol stove. It's a far, far better deal, and means you don't have to use a dangerous cat food "stove", you can use the real thing.
    Though you can, of course, use the real thing with this set, if you have any ingenuity at all. It takes only a couple of minutes to adapt this set to use a Trangia or an Esbit alcohol stove.

      I've tried using a trangia with this stove- not enough clearance height between the stand and the pot. Puts the flame out.
