    Welcome back to another Humm Baby Busts video and today we go back to the decade of the 2000’s - an amazing decade for MLB Drafts that included superstars like Buster Posey, Adrian Gonzales, Justin Upton, and Steven Strasburg along with future Hall of Famers Clayton Kershaw, Justin Verlander and Joe Mauer, among many other great players. However, there was also no shortage of absolute busts and today we’ll count down the Top 15 MLB Busts from the decade of the 2000’s. These are players who were taken very high in the draft and had a ton of hype behind their name but ultimately failed to make much of an impact if any at all at the MLB level. So, let’s not waste any time today and jump right into starting at #15…

    This is a great series of videos. I only have one tiny suggestion. If the presenter could state what notable players were still available when each bust was chosen, that would be awesome. He does it every once in a while, but not on every bust. Overall, great series.

    Yeah, the Orioles front office simply sat on the turd throne and did their business for 14 long, frustrating and forgettable years.
    Stupid me, I went to their games, expecting them to pull off a win.
    I'm really happy, now, with Elias and his crew.
    The metrics approach allows them to avoid picking players like this list.
    The only game I believe they won with me in attendance was against Texas.
    My dad grew up in the NYC area.
    So, I did get tickets a few years in a row to see the Yanks and Orioles.
    The Yanks beat the Birds 3 of the 4 times we went.
    Overall fun.

    Great List! Really shows how hard it is to get to the majors. Just because you’re a high pick nothing is guaranteed. I think most of it has to do with how it is moving from high school as an 18 yr old to competing with people 20-22 yrs olds in rookie league. Look at all the great talent coming out of college now! Hopefully young players take notice.

    The fact that other than Stodolka no other Royals made this list when their Top 10 Picks of that Decade included Stodolka, Colt Griffin, and Chris Lubanski makes this a Bust Video in and of itself lol

      I love these videos, but you're right. He tends to have mostly players who made the bigs and didn't perform well while there are plenty of top 10 picks from any decade who never even made the bigs (such as your examples of Griffin and Lubanski here).

      I immediately knew Colt Griffin had to be on this list based on how much hope KC had for the next Roger Clemens (who never advanced beyond AA. Was quite shocked to see Stodolka instead (and admittedly had TOTALLY forgotten about Lubanski).

    The Orioles had too many. Rowell, Wade Townsend, Matt Hobgood.
    The 2000s Orioles could not produce pitchers, outside of Erik Bedard. The MiL trainers and pitching coaches messed with the pitchers and they just couldn't produce. That's why Jake Arrieta came alive for the Cubs. They let him go back to how he pitched in college.

    • @patrickdare5356
      @patrickdare5356 Před 4 měsíci

      Townsend was never an Oriole. Although he was drafted in the first round he never signed. Unfortunately the rules were different back then. As compensation for not signing him, the O's got a pick at the end of the supplemental first round (#48 overall). Under current rules they would have received the 9th pick, although that front office would likely have whiffed on that pick too as an awful lot of nothing was drafted after Tulowitski at #7.

    • @patrickdare5356

      Rowell also reportedly suffered from a massive ego problem, as it was stated repeatedly that he was uncoachable. Hobgood was a reach, a money saving pick and everyone knew it. It has often been suspected that he was injured before the draft as he never threw as hard as a professional as he did as a high schooler.

    How do you make it to the big leagues, post a sub 3 ERA and then never make it back again? So with a 2.96 ERA that wasn't good enough as a left-handed reliever to get a job somewhere in the bigs? Sometimes I wonder what these general managers and scouts are looking for and it just seems weird that certain guys have to beg for a job when they just get people out. That's the name of the game, probably because moneyball and analytics have ruined the eyeball test. Who knows but that guy needed a better agent if he couldn't get back on a roster after posting a 2.96 E RA in his rookie year.

  • @crowtservo
    @crowtservo Před 3 měsíci

    As a Pirates fan, I think they took Moskos as a guy who could reach the major leagues quickly and contribute right away and be cheap to boot. Of course it didn’t work out that way and Littlefield was out the door soon afterwards.
    As for Bullington, I remember reading the P-G article about him the day after the draft and the Pirates scouting director said he’d probably be a #3 pitcher some day. The Pirates took starting pitchers in the first round 5 years in a row from 1998-2002. Clint Johnston, Bobby Bradley, Sean Burnett, John VanBenschoten and Bryan Bullington. Sean Burnett was the only one who had a major league career. As a relief pitcher.
    In 2003, they took Paul Maholm and he had a real major league career as a starter. In 2004 and 2005 they took position players and it only turned in to Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen. You’d think they would have learned their lesson and stuck with position players, but nope. Brad Lincoln in 2006 and Daniel Moskos jn 2007 got them going back to drafting pitchers who didn’t do much of anything in the majors. Gerrit Cole was the first legit first round starting pitcher they ever took. And they misused him, never letting him pitch to his strengths and he left on a terrible trade and he took off with real organizations, the Astros and Yankees.

    They should take away the metal bats in College, it gives false info to teams. The only other option is to implement them into the MLB systems which they will never do. Then they need to drop these "signing bonuses" in every sport for rookies. What you did in HS and College means nothing anymore. You are facing the top players in the sport so prove you belong and get your bonus after completing your first contract, it should be that way in every sport. We've seen way to many busts who never live up to the hype and never make it or do the bare minimum. Bonuses should be for the accomplished not the hopeful.

But, this is human society we are talking about with human flaws and rarely do we get anything right in actuality. Hell, look at Aroldis Chapman, he gets accused of despicable things but he wins a title for my cubbies yet all is forgiven? Yeah Nuh uh, we must differentiate between the player we love or the player we love to hate and the actual person who may turn out to be a giant d bag or a genuine misunderstood good human being.
