Even with all those risqué names, Yorkshire is still an absolutely brilliant place to visit.
…..and live of course!!
--But even better to depart!!
I feel as though the lack of a pub in Booze or a greasy spoon in Fryup represent missed business opportunities. I'm originally from Worcestershire where we have Lickey End, Bell End and Minge Lane within a few miles of one another. We also have our own Cockshott Lane (not to be confused with the one in Armley :)
Thanks Richard
Haha, had a good chuckle at these. You should have done runners up such as Naffterton, Hole of Horcum, and Boggle Hole
Oh there's plenty more in the can lol
@@AdventureMe the hole of horcum is an oddly fascinating feature. like, you're literally looking at a hole but it somehow draws you in. i love the north yorkshire moors, they're quirky af.
Fact, the original path from Whitby to boggle hole went into the sea in the early 2000s and them names are funny too
When I was a kid I would spend ages just going through the atlas of the UK looking for the most stupid names. Most of them were from Yorkshire north to Scotland, but I think that is mainly because in the south more of the tiny places got swallowed up by bigger places.
Lol I could feel wetwang approaching! Interesting stuff mate
You and me both!
Nothing quite as good as going out to Booze, snorting some Cockayne with some Crackpots and having a Fryup followed by Land Of Nod! 🙄😉🤦🏻♂️
I was trying to think of a pun to cover them all to end the video.
Haha, I was going to include the other names with some risqué innuendos but then I had second thoughts lol
Sounds like a plan
There's a place called Jump, near Barnsley and Idle near Bradford - famous for the Idle Working mens Club. I moved from Yorkshire to Lancashire many years ago (don't judge me) and I currently live not far from Nob End!
I bet the road goes STRAIGHT through it ! (No Bend)
I was planning to move to Wetwang about 20 years ago and had put my name down on a plot of land (in what is now Chariot Way).
Whilst they were digging the foundations, they unearthed an iron age chariot burial which delayed things so much I had to buy elsewhere.
Great village: 2 pubs (Black Swan and Victoria) and one of the best chip shops in Britain. My parents are buried in Garton and I have to avoid visiting their grave when the chip shop is open, for the sake of my waistline.
Dear Heart, I had a right good chuckle at some of the names of Yorhshire towns, but your video made my heart yearn when seeing such beautiful country, (but then I've always been blindingly charmed by the English cvountryside). Thank you, Luv. You've given an old lady a few minutes of happy warmth.😊 Oh, and yea for the fish and chips!😂💕
Thanks for watching
Dear Me, from far away Australia, a big thank you for the laugh and fond reminiscences of our favourite county in the UK.
Olympic Breakfast! - Long Memory!!!! The picture of the Little Chef is on the A65 near Clapham and is now called The Goat Gap Cafe if you want to look up that name.
I know. Used to frequent that establishment on the A65. Only when someone else was paying of course lol
You beat me to it. I pass the Goat Gap Café regularly. (Must call in sometime...)
@@AdventureMe said like a true Yorkshireman .....
Short arms and deep pockets !
The Goat Gap do great food though a little bit pricey
I had not heard of Helwith but have spent many an evening drinking in the Helwith Bridge Hotel at Helwith Bridge in Ribblesdale about 4 miles north of Settle.
**groan** terrible puns there but still made me chuckle!! 🤣🤣
I tried lol
Sorry luv but Eden is a bit further away but still in the north, in Cumbria. Lovely compilation and gorgeous views of my home county. I’m a stranger in a strange land ie Lancashire!
Little Chef's aren't around anymore, they were all sold to Euro Garages in Feb 2017, who closed them all down in early 2018.
Strangely their website is still live
Only you, Darren who come up with a snuggle video as this one. I must say, i laughed a lot at this one. Thanks for this one….anymore coming?? Enjoy the week ahead, Darren. Your the best!! 🏴😊👍🇺🇸
The Land of Nod got its name as there was a pub there on the Market Weighton canal. Boat men would stop in the pub, drink to much and fall asleep, hence the name. Neither the canal or pubs are there, just a couple of farms. I was told this when I went to school in Holme upon Spalding Moor
Very interesting, thanks Ashley.
That was great fun! I often drive past the turnoff for Sexhow which makes me chuckle every time. Great work!!
Wetwang is mentioned in Lord of the Rings /The Hobbit. So JRR Tolkien was obviously a fan of the area.
JRR Tolkien lived in Leeds for about 4 years. Something the Tolkien scholars forget. I've often wondered if the show caves in Yorkshire inspired the caverns in Helm's deep.
Nickey Nackey Lane in Cawood, near Selby, North Yorkshire.
If you do more in the north of England, please do not forget Fanny Barks in Durham.
Blimey, you still got a Little Chef up there - lets do the time warp!!! Well that certainly tickled the old schoolboy humour😃😂🤣
I feel Upperthong and Netherthong near Holmfirth were missed opportunities.
Cock Hill between Oxenhope and Hebden Bridge similarly.
Warter and Warthill near York suggest some sort of medical problem in the area.
Thwing, near Bridlington is funny, but not particularly rude.
Egypt, Jericho, Jerusalem, and World's End near Thornton in Bradford seem a little out of place.
They just didn't make this list, but I have them noted for future ones. Some great suggestions there.
Entertaining vlog. Reminds me of a visit to Shipley where I saw a bus with a slightly skewed destination blind going to Idle Moo. In Lancashire (foreign parts) there's a suburb of Morecambe called Bare, as a child I was always amused by the road sign, at the Shrimp Roundabout on the A589, for the B5375 to Bare on which some wag had scrawled Bum!
Yes there's quite a few more still to go.
There is also a part of Morecambe called The Battery.
Now I don't know if it was a coincidence or someone did it on purpose, but when Morecambe and Lancaster had its own buses, the route to.the Battery was the U2.
I kid you not.
There’s so many great names in Yorkshire. Mustn’t forget the Bay of Biscay just outside Bradford.
That was really good ,something really interesting and original. Well done at all your research. Thank you.
Great video mate, you definitely need to do more in both Yorkshire and afar. We have some great names in this country!
We sure do.
In Worcestershire we have Bell End. Lickey End, Lickey Rock, Peter's Finger. And many more.
Yes!!! The wonderful, the fabulous YORKSHIRE!!!. Proud Yorkshire lass here 💕
Well that certainly put a smile on my face on a cold and dull Sunday . Thank you Darren .
Always knew Yorkshire was a strange place !!!
We love visiting friends in Yorkshire. They live in a weaver’s cottage, built in the 1790’s, in the village of Shat. The name comes from the shattering of rocks and the people are known as Shatterers.
Strange but lovely!!
@@jamesskeoch6562 Naturallyy
Land of Nod is very local to me and part of a lovely cycle route used by many round here, entertaining watch.
I've never been, but seen the signs for it.
Hello Just Subscribed Now 👌 Traveling with you is always a great pleasure! Thanks for sharing your wonderful experience.🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🙋
Thanks and welcome aboard.
Utterly brilliant something lightheaded to have a giggle at. Just the thing for a Sunday night 🙂
Had a laugh and a lift -- thanks. Definitely something a little askew with us Yorkshire folk.
Nothing can beat "Twatt" on Orkney.
Also one near Aberdeen..
I'd love to get that photo.
@@ianhalsall-fox my replies were under review. I thought they were blocked.
There is also a “Twatt” on Shetland.
Hey Darren great vlog and information thanku 💯😊
No problem 👍
We Twang, home of Cliff Richard's band,The Shadows surely. My favourite name is Thwing.
LOL, made me smile. Bit different to your usual video.
Lets all organise a flash mob in Booze :)
Sounds great!
Blubberhouses in Washburn Valley( aka the Yorkshire Lake District ). This was where I grew up knew everyone in the valley & they knew you.❤️
Thank you that was absolutely brilliant I wondered if you would have Wetwang as it turned out it was number one I’d love to see more like boggle hole yes that exists as well
that chippy at Wetwang is shyte and expensive
this is useful info. thx.
Dave likes it.
@@Neil070 the plot thickens...
Little chefs still going!!! We used the maps to get to places on scooter rallys lol.
That was funny good old Yorkshire ,near me we have Cockin lane which leads to Hole bottom farm, brow lane Clayton. its true lol
I was on Cockin Lane two days ago filming the Queensbury line.
I am really surprised you didn't refer to " Tickle Cock bridge " in Castleford.
.
Yes I know it's not a place but a location, but it's in your neck of the woods and it's on Wikipedia no less, even after the council tried to name it (which didn't work out well for them).
.
Take pride in our local "smutty" names.
Yeah, this was places and hamlets. I will probably do road names one day in the future.
@@AdventureMe Hmm, "A1" is not very exciting.
If you can get a shorter street name than A B Row, you're doing well. Also in the W Midlands is Baccabox Lane. Don't ask, I don't know.
There is also a "Tittybottle Park" in Otley, another subtly lewd named place.
There's a town in Poland called PSYCHO , always makes me laugh when I drive past
Very good list, I would also add the brilliantly named Slack Bottom, just outside of Heptonstall in West Yorkshire 😀
Yes I'll put that on my next list. Thanks mate.
Cokayne is also a surname, mainly in Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and the West Midlands.
Ps spelt Cockayne, Cockayne, Cockain and variants e.g.Cockin.
I had a few good laughs on this video. Excellent puns!
Great video, only heard of a few of these places, one being Fryup as we used to visit relatives on one of the farms!
Penistone Engineering Workshop was featured in Top Gear as was Peniston Oils
We went on holiday in1948 from London to wales on the way we saw signposts to Piddle and I think Little Piddle, I was only 10 at that time
Yes the Queensbury old line brings you out onto Cockin lane so you know i am not telling porkys lol
It was nice to see Yorkshire again % it reminds me a must book next years holiday back in the county i was born in west riding
Pen is "head" in the Welsh language. Penistone. I is "to" but if the i becomes a y, as it often does in English, Y would be the article and is used as a link word to form compound nouns. So I'm left wondering is their is a Welsh linguistic link in the name.
I'm no expert but the clear linguistic links to Welsh suggests Welsh Celts settled in the Pennines. A couple of obious e.g. Pen-y Ghent, a well known Yorkshire hill, and Dewsbury, as in Dewi, David's town.
Before the Anglo-Saxons, wouldn't everyone have been speaking something that is closer to Welsh? Maybe the names just pre-date the Scandi influx.
That was really funny please do more soo funny
My younger brother was the fish fryer in Wetwang chippy, it is a very busy little shop
When I was a student in Ripon (half a century ago!), I lodged on Ure Bank, at the bottom of which was the Railway Inn, next to the derelict rail station, closed by Beeching years before.
I suggested that since the railway had gone, he should rename the pub after the nearby river.
My suggestion (the Ure Inn) did not go down well.....
If there was a well would the pub be named Ure Well Inn...
I noticed a street on the edge of Hebden Bridge the other day with the name Thistle Bottom
ouch
I enjoyed your clever video, I fine almost all of your videos interesting. Keep up the good work.
Thanks mate
I was aware of Booze - possibly from reading about the mining accident !
This gave me a good giggle thanks.
I love the villages of "Lower Thong" & "Nether Thong" near Honley
Richard
nice one darren
Thanks 👍
Love the Yorkshire humour Darren, some fair old names to contend with.Pete
Thanks Pete, I tried.
I will have to go to Fryup. What a great name.
We got off lightly there’s a Cockernhoe in Hertfordshire lol
Hi Darren, just what the Doctor ordered. Levity too much doom and gloom! My Grandad always threatened to send me to Bubwith if I stepped out of line.
Steve
Penistone has a current railway station. The mainline side of it is closed, the local line is very much open.
There is a place by me called sodom (North Wales) i have passed through wetwang and land of nod a few times.
And no mention of Low Bell End, just up from Rosedale. OKay, that's a farm, but the sign still amuses me.
I nearly did. But like you said it's a farm not a place. Lots of crazy farm names.
Be nice if you could do a vid on silly street names. I'll give you one to start. Clog Sole Rd near Brighouse.
Cheers.
Fanny Street where I live in Saltaire.
Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate in York.
My area can beat any of those, with Wyre Piddle to the south, and villages north of the town called Lickey End and (drum roll) Bell End.
Sajid Javid is our MP and was careless enough to be photographed in front of the entrance to Bell End Farm, in front of the signage.....or was he manoeuvred into position??? "Just move a few steps to the right, Mr. Javid". The photo was shown on Have I Got News For You some years back.
Yes, the pub in Bell End does some very good food.
Got a bridge in castleford called Tickle Cock Bridge. Always makes me laugh when I pass under it.
Yes I've seen that. Lol
lol at eden being goole. you rock.
Great video as always Pal 😂
Thanks Danny
Fun vid. Good job. 👍
Near Penistone is Wombwell which amused me as a youngster. Then there's Blubberhouses and Wightwizzle which sound funny
I really enjoyed that. My surnames from West Yorkshire. Now known more as being Leeds and Bradford Airport. It means town on a hill. The town hall looks like something out of trumpton! Oh yes when ordering a takeaway l say my names Smith people have many difficulties with Yeadon, trust me!
Yeadon Airport is what I still call it. The town hall is run by a good friend of mine.
Greeting from another Yeadoner ( bottom end, nearly in stinky Esholt )
@@theolder_man5768 Well I never! Your the only other fellow Yeadoner outside my own clan I have heard from! Hello Sir!
@@AdventureMe A small world! How very interesting.
Its funny that there's a grave yard at the end of the runway, gives you confidence! Am I right in thinking that was used by Avro?
Fryup should be the sister city of Two Egg, Florida, USA.
About in Bradford area ' To All Alone Lane'
I can see a weekend tour of the top 10 coming up soon.... 👍
If you'd looked a bit west of Hoo Hole near Hebden Bridge you'd have found Hole Bottom in Todmorden, accessed via Hole Bottom Road.
There's a Farm Nr Hebden Bridge Called Milk Churn Joan
How about Skipton?👻
Across the border in Lancashire they have a town called 'Clit Heroe'!
Great stuff wonder if Hertfordshire has any weird names too
Most probably
Very good, you have some lovely photo
Thanks Steve
How about .. Squirrel Ditch... be nice to see what.s there. Good photo's.
Star bottom. Renamed to Botton, not far from Kettlewell
Been to Wetwang! Posed with the sign too,
Funny as..
Fryup - little chef - I thought little chef was extinct !
They are extinct, that was tongue in cheek.
i believe many of the locals refer to wetwang with a k replacing g
Not in Yorkshire (sadly! But we do have brilliant place names here in 'God's Own Country' - and The Pennines!!!), but two place names which always used to amuse me whenever I used a telephone box (a loooong time ago!) - they were on the list of codes on the wall- Snitterfield and Snodland.
What about Jump near Barnsley south yorkshire
you missed " CUMWELL Lane" which leads to "Cumwell fields" S61
We used to live near Catherine Slack Brighouse area
Clifton near Swinton in Salford has an area called Crackpot
Wetwang, has not got 1 pub, but has 2.
I would have been very disappointed if Wetwang didn’t get a mention…but I’m pleased it got position 1! The old county of Yorkshire is full of lovely old place names. Back in the 1980s I used to have to occasionally visit Mankinholes near Todmorden whenever we had to check the TV relay station there. One one visit my colleague was driving our IBA (ITV ) u.h.f. TV survey vehicle…packed with expensive equipment…and after we left the transmitter site we approached a narrow gap between two farm buildings. It was very muddy road because the cows had just crossed the road for milking. We stopped to allow a very fast Ford Estate car that was ‘belting’ towards us…he couldn’t stop because of the mud. We were stationary when he hit us and when he hit our Volvo (built like a tank it was hardly dented at the front) the driver disappeared in a sea of red particles, sausages and raw meat lumps! The butcher’s delivery vehicle had been full of fresh meat for customer’s freezers and everything went flying over the seats to bombard the driver. We were relieved to find that (although covered with blood, mincemeat and liver, etc from the shoulders up) he was unharmed. His biggest worry was what he was going to tell his boss … as it was his car! I’m sure it would have smelled very badly within a few days! And no…we weren’t given any free samples! Incidentally, if you ever visit the Hampshire Downs…be sure to visit Betty Mundy’s Bottom near Corhampton. Some beautiful views from the downs…I was a frequent visitor years ago (for nature walks…nothing else!). Named after a farmer’s wife it’s no longer a farmhouse unfortunately. Regards, Rob.
Wetwang makes it into Lord of the Rings as a marsh full of black swans.
Good old wetwang
slack bottom, hebden bridge
the cleckhuddersfax triangle...
Is that a person? lol
You missed out Blubberhouses, half way between Harrogate & Skipton. Also Hubberholme in Upper Wharfedale.
It just didn't make this list, but I have it noted for future ones.
