  • Joseph Welch finally asked the question of McCarthy: "Have you no decency, sir?"
MCCARTHY chronicles the rise and fall of Joseph McCarthy, the Wisconsin senator who came to power after a stunning victory in an election no one thought he could win. Once in office, he declared that there was a vast conspiracy threatening America - emanating not from a rival superpower, but from within. Free of restraint or oversight, he conducted a crusade against those he accused of being enemies of the state, a chilling campaign marked by groundless accusations, bullying intimidation, grandiose showmanship and cruel victimization. With lawyer Roy Cohn at his side, he belittled critics, spinning a web of lies and distortions while spreading fear and confusion. After years in the headlines, he was brought down by his own excesses and overreach. But his name lives on linked to the modern-day witch hunt we call “McCarthyism.”

@marcusdavenport1590 he was right that Fischer had been part of a communist group in his college days. But they questioned his sense of decency when attacking a person not connected to this case. Remember the introduction; the opposing lawyer had remarkably not been drafted to the Korean War, so they agreed to not bring up this fact and keep Fischer out of the limelight. During this time you could lose everything, including friends and family, by just being accused of harboring communist ideas....

@@happyhour4670you know how many innocent people had their names dragged through the mud in November and December of 2020 alone because of the outrageous indecency that was the Trump disinformation campaign that culminated in Jan. 6th?
Also, speaking of: if McCarthy at the height of his popularity had gathered a crowd of armed individuals down the street from the Capitol building and directed them to march down to disrupt a key government function, resulting in the forcible entry of the Capitol building and multiple deaths, he would have been dragged off to jail, his reputation in ruins and his career in shreds. If you're referring to Trump, he IS Mr. Welch. If you really don't see that then you've learned nothing from McCarthyism. Senators, Congresspeople, news pundits, career bureaucrats at the FBI, DOJ, CIA, constantly and relentlessly bringing up one baseless accusation or another against Trump, his family, friends, and associates, all in an attempt to get him to resign or not run again, is just as shameful as anything McCarthy ever did. There are modern-day McCarthys. Their names are Adam Schiff, Jerry Nadler, Robert Mueller, Eric Swalwell, Adam Kinsinger, Liz Cheney, among many others. How many good people like Gen. Michael Flynn or Rudy Giuliani have been needlessly tarred and feathered by Trump's enemies. Trump and his supporters ARE Mr. Welch, NOT Sen. McCarthy. If you really can't see that, then we've truly learned nothing from this era.

I don't know what that one guy's agenda is, but no, you couldn't see McCarthy thinking "What did I do?" The editing of this video suggests that McCarthy was quiet and reflective after Welch's question, but in reality he responded immediately by making a case that he was just revealing the truth and that it was Welch that lacked decency. The public didn't buy it and the rest is history, but that's how it actually went down. Also, this guy is suggesting Welch had this all planned out, but there was no way he could have known McCarthy would violate the agreement, nor could he have been sure his "performance" would sway the public to his side just after hearing that he had a communist on his team. The idea that this was some kind of planned trap for McCarthy is absurd.

He manages to survive politically because his Qultists don't actually care about decency at all. To his core supporters, decency is a kudgel to wield or discard at a moment's notice for even the slightest incidental advantage against their opponents. They simulatenously claim his opponents are rude and crude while also praising that "he's not politically correct" etc.
It's if anything, Orwellian. Trump speaks with an impoverished vocabulary to reinforce the idea that loyalty and belonging to the group, that the vicarious thrill of crushing opponents, are more valuable to the human experience then facts, reality, and understanding.

Yes and no, there is the Tydings Committee in theory sought to evaluate some of the names McCarthy had. I say "in theory" because anyone who has read the historical documentation know the committee more so existed to attack McCarthy than to actually evaluate his claims, with the committee being divided across partisan lines and claiming an objectively false fact (the idea that the McCarthy list was the Lee-list). The reason this is a lie is that as covered by some historians and journalist of the 124 names McCarthy submitted to Tydings in writing 48 were not from the Lee list (meaning 38% of the list was not the Lee-list) and 68 of the names listed were still in the state department which was used to show that even those present in both the Lee list and McCarthy's list were primarily used to show that such charges of communism hadn't been dealt with as Tydings would claim they had.
In one particular instance of a person interrogated by the Tydings Committee there was a peculiar case. A "Earl Browder" (this in particular curiously omitted from his wikipedia page) refused to answer some questions for the committee, this resulted in a contempt citation (something the committee never threatened him with). So to his defense as his one and only witness, this previous communist boss calls to the stand senator Joe McCarthy. When asked if Browder had been in contempt McCarthy said this "in all my experience as a judge, and a lawyer, I don't know if I have ever seen more perfect cooperation between a witness and the chairman of the committee. When the witness refused to testify it appeared to be with the wholehearted approval of the chair. The chair, in fact, was not interested in eliciting information from the witness which would indicate the presence of Communist in the government ... The witness came down and took a very active part in what the chair was trying to do, and that was to conduct a cover up." Browder's defense attorney also concurred arguing that Browder had been acting upon what the majority of the committee had wanted. Browder using this defense was AQUITTED.
Unfortunately everything I said has not been on tape (to my knowledge) however you are free to search for books or track down the sources for what I said if you want. Typically if you look up a case with Browder this case will not come up as there is another popular case involving him, and to put it bluntly the case I mentioned isn't even on his wikipedia page likely because it would come with the tacit admission that the Tydings Committee (and thus subsequent attacks of McCarthy which followed it) was blatantly political.

These communist were named by other Communist who were involved in the spying like Whitaker Chambers and Elizabeth Bentley.
We have their communist party numbers, we have the checks they used to pay their communist party dues, (it was illegal to be a communist or fascist or any other authoritarian system in the government), these people gave our NUCLEAR SECRETS to Russia and China!
