- England move to the brink of qualifying for the 1988 European Championships by thrashing Turkey 8-0 at Wembley in October 1987. Gary Lineker nets a hat-trick, while John Barnes scores twice and Bryan Robson, Peter Beardsley and Neil Webb all find the net. It is the second time in the 1980s that England beat Turkey 8-0, but just months earlier the away fixture ended goalless.

Thanks for the upload. I was at this game as a young boy. Nice to see the goals again.
I was at this game on a school trip from Margaret Beaufort Middle School. We were late and missed the first goal - heard it getting in to Wembley. Man, took me back.
remember getting a lil goody bag with a paper hat and a turkish delight?
Neil Webb really deserved that goal at the end there.
Yeah and lovely pass for 1st goal too.
John Barnes - the closest thing we ever had to a Brazilian Englishman. This was one of England's best ever teams, Shilton in goal, Hoddle in midfield, Barnes, Beardsley and Lineker up front.
Gazza the way he used to dribble, always reminded me of Maradona. Very nimble footwork. Barnes & Gazza were the two most skillful English players I've seen.
@@vja1970 Hoddle?
@@thewomble1509 ball skills? Gazza n Barnes were better
@@vja1970 Better dribblers certainly but Hoddle had better ball control and he could land the ball on a five pence piece. All three were miles better than any English player around today.............
I saw 6 bookings if the Turkish players bothered to go down and roll around , good honest players then on both sides shame it's all got so cheaty
No. You wouldn’t have been booked for those tackles back then.
Jayfive276 he meant if they had rolled around or dived, then bookings might have happened...
@@dazzajim - yeah, but refs still wouldnlt have booked players unless they were really bad challenges, regardless of whether the player rolled around or not.
@@mattylamb9194 well let's see, it worked for Klinsmann in 1990 which was only 3 years later. I think refs could still be conned, lest we start sounding like old men claiming it was a fairer game `in our day` LOL
Harbi bu fifa 98 deki spikerin sesi :) Anılarım canlandı.
And just 15 years later Turkey were in the World Cup semifinals and 3rd place finishers.........
Shows you how much Turkey had improved
yes hi from Turkey , legend team Rüştü Rençber, Hasan Şaş, Abdullah Ercan, Tugay Kerimoğlu, Hakan Şükür, Emre Belözoğlu, Hakan Ünsal, Bülent Korkmaz , Ergün Pembe, Ümit Davala
They also had an extremely, extremely easy group & knockout opponents too in that world cup
@@Gg-zd8xz Yes, Brazil are indeed a notoriously easy team. I do not remember how poor they were in 2002. How bad were they? Turkey were certainly lucky to get them again in the semi final.
Turkey were also indeed lucky to get the hosts, Japan, who had easily topped their own group.
And don't get me started on Senegal, who only defeated the previous world champions, France, in that tournament.
In all seriousness though, you are clearly ignorant.
Turkey were very unlucky not to beat Brazil on both occasions.
They were inches away from a final against the Germans.
And after just 1.5 year after 2002 WC success Turkey couldn't even beat Latvia to join Euro 2004. That's not a progress. That's a zigzag Turkey always has been
I was a 10 year old boy when I saw this game.. I remember feeling embarrassed :)
My first ever trip to Wembley and to see England - great memories going with my dad
2 months before i was born. Great game!
Though many of the players were then around the same age as today's 2015 team, back then it just seemed like there were more mature players, more focused and more leaders. No Jack-the-lad Wiltshire, no Sterling sulking over a lack of 200,000 p.w contract. Pearce born for the shirt, Barnes and Beardsley full of energy, Waddle dizzying, Hoddle so gifted, Lineker the best poacher in European football then, along with van Basten.
Stop being so overly nostalgic lol, England's results in the 2010s have been better than their results in the 80s.
+765sanjay no. their last two world cups were disastrous. in the 80's England still had a semblance of quality.
Yep, the 80-90 England squads got to second round, q/f and semi...if you discount the play-off in 90, two of those world cups they never lost a match in 90 mins...the players were just better footballers, in 82 they had Sansom, Wilkins, mariner, young Robson , Rix...
BRob 2015 aaq
BRob 2015 well simply they were better players. Sterling not in the same league as Barnes. Lineker was world class. Bobby Robson was a great manager. We still used to win matches at Wembley
hoddle criminally under used by england...
the most talented english player i have ever seen...
You have not seen Charlton or Gazza then. But Hoddle was under used . Quality player
Peter Beardsley = class
@HITMAN FLASH piss off
@HITMAN FLASH Do you provide evidence then...........
@HITMAN FLASH The same MSM that is now absolutely desperate to find evidence of racism in everything from The Archers to Premier Lge football? Oh right . Btw, the Guardian....bit of a murky past itself.... Google it, don't be so lazy.
@HITMAN FLASH All MSM is slanted. Look that up, it'll keep you busy for an hour or two. Either way, I'm not wasting my time on a troll mate so do one.
@HITMAN FLASH And you wouldn't dare say that to my face so take your micro brain and your insults and stick 'em mate, unless you want to take this further.......I won't hold my breath.
Ah when Turkey used to be one of the whipping boys of Europe shows that nations can improve 14 years later 3td place at world cup
Yes true this England team was legend
Robbo was my favourite England player at the time - no one has matched him since, not even Gazza. Robbo - an absolute legend
A fit Bryan Robson would have led England to the 1990 World Cup.
@@julesakers3051 Agreed
Hoddle played superbly. 53 caps! Pathetic. One of the greatest players we've ever had.Just imagine if Clough had beem manager, he would have had 153.
That is not likely.
Too inconsistent!
If only Greenwood had the nerve to use him alongside or rather behind Brooking and Keegan in 1982 England would have been semi finalists that year
Hoddle shone v lesser teams.
In big games he was often posted missing or a passenger sunce he gave nothing when not in possession.
Cough but his team around solid midfielders like McGovern and bowyer-Stan Bowles didn't last long with clough.
I remember before maradona scored v England in the commentator Saud "huddle has not been able to control the game in midfield the way maradona has for Argentina." That was white telling in many games hidden had v top teams.
Amen/Legend & 1 of the finest passers + creative players ever witnessed anyway. Were a fair few top Mid's who were about then/emerging though.
Good night. Next like and thanks from country Azerbaijan

Ingilizler rugby takımı gibi. Adamlar vücut olarak maçı zaten kafada bitirmiş. Bizimkiler deli dana gibi ortada dansöz gibi kıvırmış. Ama kabul edilmeli ingilizler in bu kadro efsaneymiş.
I was there, aged 13. I was with a school party.
Uğur Tütüneker dışında ayakta durabilen, topun ayağına yakıştığı bir ikinci adam yok takımda.
Ah Mustafa Denizli Ah
Bunlar nasıl topçular da bu adamları Wembley de İngilizlerin karşısına çıkardın ?
I know that Neil Webb was supposed to be a replacement of Glenn Hoddle. But I am glad seeing both played at the same time. The result can be seen at 9:52. A delightful weighted ball from Hoddle after his excellent work was finished with good volley by Webb. I am quite sure even Webb didn't expect that lovely pass to be volleyed; maybe he expected a higher ball for header.
Webb couldn’t lace Hoddles boots. It was a disgrace how Glenn was treated. Winning leagues and cups at Monaco & couldn’t get a first team place. … #wasted.
Imagine what he’d be worth nowadays !
I remember the 0-8 3 years earlier. It was in middle of miners strike. ITV mid-afternoon watched with load of striking miners.
This was a very good England team with a really good manager...shame Waddle hit the post against Germany :(
Hit the post like Princess Diana
@@scaparapadoobedoooo3170 No, hers was more of a slice.
Not Waddles fault.. Look at Shilton for why we lost penalty shoot outs
@@xiropigado Definitely don't blame Waddle, just wish his shot in normal play had gone inside the post. And I totally agree, remember my brother describing Shilton like a sack of potatoes :)
@@bagpussmacfarlan9008 Definitely. Look at the size of Shilton inside the posts. Even back in 1990 he looked small for a keeper. Even if he guessed the right way, which he hardly ever did, you didn't need to get it right in the corner to score.
I was delighted that Neil Webb scored because he was class in that game.
resmen Takoz gibi takımmışız o zamanlar ne yetenek var ne taktik nede fizik güç adamlar her yönden bizden 5 gömlek daha iyiler!!!!! şimdiki milli takım cok daha iyi seviyede...

Kenny Sansom is an unsung England hero. Neil Webb a Clough protégé, and Hoddle in his prime, with Lineker just being Lineker. Great stuff. Bryan Robson was superb on the pitch, but for some reason lost it as a manager. Great times though!

Looked so good here yet the following summers championships were largely forgettable and Robson could have lost his job if it was this day and age. Fortunately we had a terrific world cup two years later at Italia 90
you know england had a rubbish euro 88...so did denmark who lost every match there as well...four years later and were euro champions!
England always looked good against teams that they had (then) a mental edge over, not so good against teams that weren't overawed.
We were san marino of europe until mid 90ths since then we learned soccer and rised . Worst nightmare for turkish national team that years when i was kid
Some great football here by England. Entertaining to watch. Turkey didn't give up to their credit
Şu bayram günü keşke izlemeseydim.
FANTASTIC RESULT
This team had a rough time at Euro 88 in Germany but it could've easily been so different, if things had went their way and the manager got the balance right 👍⚽❤
People gave them a hard time in 88 but the group was bloody hard..it produced two finalists and the Irish who were bloody awkward to play against and whom England made a thousand chances against..Butcher missed the tournament, Lineker was ill, Barnes/Beardsley worn out after a tough season for Liverpool...They played very well against Holland, hit the post twice before the Dutch scored..
Turkish football came on quite fast from 1987 - 21 years later they were in the Euro's semi final
90'ların ortalarından yükselişe geçti. 2000 çeyrek final, 2002 dünya üçüncüsü ve 2008 yarı final. Şimdi Türkiye'yi bu şekil yenmek imkansız.
I was there for this match. went with my School
Yazik ayakta duracak halleri yok😔😔😔😔
Beardsley top-10 best England players of all time. Underrated. He doesn't get the same press as Gascoigne did. Or some of the others.
That's because he's a racist and a bully.
England must have won 5000-0 on aggregate against poor Turkey during the eighties😮
I was there. They should have delayed kickoff as there were still many people waiting to get into the ground. We missed the first two goals!
Gez Yt So was I....luckily saw all 8 though. Only 40 odd thousand there as well if I remember rightly.
I was there too. I remember when it was 5-0 we were chanting "We want six, we want six, we want six", and that became "We want seven..." and "We want eight." Happy times.
Nope. It wouldn't have helped. We were conceding even when you guys were buying the tickets for God's sake!!! :) I was 13 and very ashamed... We've developed a lot since then though.... Great England side by the way, shame they did not at least make the final of a world cup in the '80s...
Despite the huge amount of praise on his international debut, Neil Webb was always way too slow to become a top midfielder. He seemed to be one of these players too good to play for a team out of the top 4 but then not good enough to actually play for one.
I was at this game.

Yeah, and they got to a World Cup semi final fifteen years later
It I'd strange that Turkey is not better on international stage considering they are so passionate about football.

To be honest ,it was all about the mentality and circumstances we had in the 80's, we used to have insufficient fundings for all types of sports in those days, not to mention the poor infrastructure. The post-military coup years were quite challenging for the nation and the made-to-order(!) government.
Özete bakarken golleri sayamadim.

I remember when Morocco defeated turkey in the mediterranean games final in Casablanca 3 0......in 1983......turkey use to lose no less than 5 0 vs good European sides but turkey has matured since it became a tough team to beat but still a big work to be done for them to start winning trophies. ...

Galatasaray, the most of the players are Turks, played semi final in UCL, next year 1988. Milan won the cup against Steau Buchresh in 1988. No English team, the semi finalist Turkish team but England won with 8 goals. It is ridicilous thing.

That phrase applies when a team draws or loses narrowly, and regrets not attacking enough, it doesn’t apply when they are totally humiliated.
