  • Mitsubishi Uni No 888 Colored Pencils. I was so fortunate to have this set of pencils sent to me last year by an incredibly kind and generous subscriber. At the time I made a quick video showing the wonderful things that were sent to me, but I really wanted to review this set in particular for you guys especially after my review of the Mitsubishi Uni 72 Set Colored Pencils I have reviewed.
I would like to thank you for stopping by the channel and watching this video, if you have enjoyed the video we would love you to subscribe and join our wonderful community along with getting alerts as soon as videos are posted. If you know someone who you think may also enjoy or benefit from The Art Gear Guide’s videos, then please feel free to share the channel with everyone you know.
As well as The Art Gear Guide CZcams channel, we have a web site, dedicated to delivering hi quality images of the art products we review along with a detailed written account. theartgearguide.com simply follow the link and join the community.

I am not comfortable adding this to my site or CZcams channel. I receive many emails and messages asking me how people can help support The Art Gear Guide, mainly I think due to the fact that I purchase all of the supplies myself, except those sent directly from companies kind enough to do so. I have decided to add a donations button to my site, however, I feel the best way to add such a campaign is as follows, all donations made will be used to purchase art products for review, however, all products purchased using donated funds, after they have been reviewed, will be used as giveaways to subscribers of the CZcams Channel, the web site or any of the above social media platforms. This way I personally will not benefit from financial donations. I have set this channel and site up for my own enjoyment and not profitable gain. I feel with this support method, everyone wins but not in a financial.

    Thank You
Finally, thank you so much for all of your support, without all of you, this channel and The Art Gear Guide would simply not be the same.

The biggest difficulty that I found with them is that they are a little resistant to other pencils working with them and only allow a few layers, but they are very pigmented and great to use and blend ok over a small number of layers. They are by far the softest pencils I have used. I do love the colour range though.

I have the little set of pencils in the round container = they are truly awesome. I also own the largest set of Mitsubishi Uni with the very cool dispensing box. They look very similar to my Holbein colored pencils.

Hi Harry! Today I woke up with such a pleasant surprise to see that you've reviewed these! I'd thought that you'd forgotten all about it (which is fine, your family, health and daughter comes first). I'm glad you like the other pencils as well :)
Hope all goes well with Amelia! I'm so sorry that she and your family has to deal with all that :( stay strong and bless her.
Also I'm from Hong Kong, which I suppose is relatively close to Japan haha.
As for the pencils, the ones in the barrel are from the brand Muji, which are a Japanese brand that sells pretty much everything but has a focus on stationary. They're available in Europe if I recall correctly and quite common here in Asia. I think you may have left it somewhere but there's should have been a little paper band that came with it much like the 888.
If you'd like, I can find more information on them.
As for the uni mitsubishi 888. Over here they're around 270hkd (34USD or UK 26.6) in shops and becoming more readily available as I've noticed. Also if I recall you were right as they're promoted for adult coloring books, hence the packaging.
Small note: I included a little lightfastness test I did in the package for the 888 though I'm not sure if you still have it haha.

Hi Lin my wonderful friend thank you so much for your lovely comment and I do indeed still have the Lightfast rest you sent but it is in my file where I put all my finished art work and I had completely forgot about it until you mentioned it.
Thank you for letting me know the brand of the other pencils I know a few others have let me which is really nice. If you can find out anything else about them that would be awesome because they really are gorgeous pencils.
Again Lin thank you so very much for your wonderful gift and I really apologise for saying you lived in Japan as opposed to Hong Kong.

Hi Harry, your mystery pencils are the Moma Muji colored pencil. They are available on Amazon US and eBay and I saw two sets on Amazon UK. They come in sets of half size as well as full length and the largest tube is 60. They should have small silver numbers on the barrel but no other marking and a fairly soft lead with a fairly narrow core. I’m fairly sure that’s what you have. I think they are a stationary store brand. I own them because I saw another CZcamsr mention them a couple years ago and I know some other US colorists have them. I rather like mine!! They work well in the Johanna Basford books and on that type of paper- at least for me. Hope that helps you decide on whether to review them 😊
Great review on the Unis and hope things improve with whatever is going on with your daughter ❤️

I have yet to even take them out of the plastic they came in. I had been wanting them for years and now I finally got a set I hope they work well in adult colouring books that’s why I got them. The Mitsubishi Uni 888 is available in the U.S. through jetpens.com, an online stationery/art supply store that specializes in Japanese products (they also carry products from other countries). According to the site, the Uni 888 was created specifically for use in adult coloring books. I do color myself, and they seemed nice, but I have several sets of pencils that work well for me and are easily available open stock, so I don't personally own these.

I believe the pencils in the plain cardboard tube are from a Japanese company called Muji. What Muji does from my understanding is that they focus on offering various high quality products at good prices because they purposely do minimalist packaging in order to focus more on quality. I haven't tried these pencils, but I have wanted to for a while. It might be interesting to hear your perspective on these pencils as well. I have seen them on Amazon and eBay as well.

Christina Todd Hi Christina they are indeed very similar to the Holbein, with the exception of the Lightfast information which Holbein have. If I was really pushed to make a distinction I would say that the Holbein are slightly softer and slightly more pigmented which is saying something because the Uni are heavily pigmented. Hi Harry, thank you for another great review! Regarding the pencils in the tube, they really look like the Muji colored pencils. If that's the case, they are quite affordable and not difficult to get hold of in Europe. I also remember reading some good things about these pencils being very soft, easy blend and able to handle many layers.

I bought this set of 36 and mitsubishi polycolor set and I can absolutely with 100% certainty say, that these pencils are absolutely the same. A few shades are different and the lead width is different, but most shades are the same. It is really sad that not only pencils are the same, but also shades are the same. No, polycolor doesn't feel like oil based either. Rip-off. I further need to compare them both to muji and see if there will be any similarities...but after that fiasco nothing would surprise me ....Update...no Muji is different, better pencil, more pigmented, drier (more oil content) pencil. Just counted...23 absolutely identical pencils, they paint the same, barrels the same color ...I even looked under the microscope at the pigment and laydown. They are the same.

I bought the Mitsubishi Uni 100 set, not the 888 second hand. They are awful and I do use a variety of grades not just the top ones. Far too metallic looking, do not layer well or blend at all. So disappointed as they are nearly $300 a set new here in Australia.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  Před 4 lety +2

Hi Ellie sorry to hear about your experience. I reviewed the Mitsubishi Uni the 72 set and liked them. I found they had a slightly harder core than say the Polychromos but they laid down really nice. I loved my set and wish I had of purchased the 100 set.
When I done my review I tested them on Bristol Smooth paper and then a Hot Pressed Watercolor paper, both papers relatively smooth. Since the review I have used them on UART Sanded paper, Lux Paper by Alyona I have also tested them on my Strathmore 500 Series Bristol Plate and Strathmore 500 Series Mixed Media Paper and Clairefontaine Paint-On Paper. All of these papers have a much toothier surface, especially obviously the sanded and they grip the pigment on the Mitsubishi Uni really nicely I thought.
I can’t talk too much about the blending and layering because on the tests that I completed on my video review they layered really well and blended amazing. In fact I only showed the results of the Yellow and Blue creating a green and Yellow and Red creating an orange and someone called me out saying they didn’t believe any colored pencils could blend that well and so I recorded a very short clip of me actually doing it and sent it to them via email. I had a similar thing happen once before only I added the video back online.

If you look at the close up images of the pencils on my CZcams review, they definitely don’t have shiny cores. I am really not too sure as to what would cause something like that.
I am the same as you, I hate to see any art supply go to waste, that was why I done the review of the Derwent Artists on Pastelmat because I knew a lot of people had given up on their Artists pencils and I wanted to show people how good they worked on Pastelmat. I would definitely try them on different paper especially the Pastelmat or UART Sanded. Hope this helps you out a wee bit.
