My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We see over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

I wish I’d known the difference between a MS291 and an MS261. Stihl chain saws. I was the old guy who couldn’t start the 291 so I had my local dealer find the easy start that works for that saw.
He installed it but the conversion to an easy start also requires a new flywheel. Parts are Stihl in order.

I worked at a small repair shop for years that was part of a store. We serviced what we sold. We had a boss that wouldn't hire someone to handle the window traffic, fone & parts. Since there was only 2 of us in the shop you can imagine how things went. Bear in mind we had to do pick-up & delivery also. It wasn't uncommon to be a month out. On top of that the boss would shoehorn his buddies stuff ahead of others. It was an absolute 3-ring circus! I've retired long ago, all of this happened back in the '80s & that particular shop still operates that way. I did operate a shop at home during that time also & that got old with sometimes 16 hour days. There's more to the story but this's long enough.

Your town is lucky to have a repair shop like yours in it. I remember when I lived in Arkansas, homeowners did some "magical" repairs that made figuring out what in the heck the owner did to their machines. As one old farmer told me... "EVERYTHING can be repaired with bailing wire.". 😆

Depending on the day, in just 2 cycles I get in probably about 5-10. I go through about that a day depending on how busy the counter is. Right now with about 20 units here, I tell people I am 5 business days out.

That said, my new scythe bypasses all of the issues of starting a machine and hoping it works for the first mow. All I have to do is peen the blade after about a few hours of cutting and honing the blade. No more plastic parts, fuel choked carbs and had gas. Woo Hoo!

Nice job Bre!! This is the most hectic time of year for you and I think you do and excellent job of keeping up with all those repairs. I used to do some of that as a hobby and would go to a mower shop to get parts. I saw what they were dealing with on a daily basis. WOW!!!!! They had about 6 or 8 mechanics in the shop and usually 3 or 4 ladies at the front to wait on customers. I was always amazed at how knowledgeable these ladies were. If I had specific diagnostic questions they couldn't answer they would call in a mechanic who specialized in that area. SUPER nice people!!!! You remind me of them. Always helpful and trying to give the customer the best advice to "save them time money and frustration" 😁

After watching your channel, I tried my hand at picking up a few snowblowers and mowers to repair. Would have tried 40 primer pumps, but I had it running briefly 4 days ago. Before that the echo 225 hadn't started in some 5+ years. We have 2 trimmers, electric Lowes for light duty and the echo with aftermarket non-string, 3 plastic blades for heavier weeds.

And 2 brigs motor mowers that sat for undetermined years to the point everything is seized solid. I got the 2 2159s running. And one still just needs an oil pickup. Wow! I knew that you were busy, but the number of problems that you fixed in one day is huge. You are a treasure to your community for all the help that you provide to your customers. I have learned so much from you. I pass on things that I have learned to others. I had someone who was having trouble with a Ariens GT. I have several and others in the area that have them also look to me for help when they need it. The GT would run if fuel was added to the carb using another gas can. IT would draw fuel from it so I knew that the fuel pump was working. I suggested changing the fuel line running form the tank to the filter and then to the fuel pump. New fuel line and a filter did the trick. He now is back mowing. I remember that the fuel lines can deteriorate on the inside from the ethanol in the fuel and after about 30 years the line was no good.

I went to start my stihl hedge trimmer the other day and it ran poorly and died. Pumped a few times and it did the same thing. Just saw this video with you fixing as many things as you could and the one machine you said to pump the primer 40 times. Seemed counterintuitive the trimmer would flood. Just tried it, pumped it 40 times and it started on the second pull.
Can't thank you enough. Learn so much from you.
    Be Well

You are a lot more patient than I. Sometimes it takes me a few days I will lose my cool and break something if I just don't walk away. A quick aggravating fix if I am in a bad mood can lead to buying a new piece of equipment or doing without. That is why I specifically am NOT a small engine mechanic.

I am right there with you. That is why I prefer working on my own stuff. When it reaches the point of no return, I can at least Hulk out on it and get THAT satisfaction!

Same here. I used to have a couple of frustrating "customers". I'm a homeowner, but I had my kids doing the yardwork. And I'd have to repair my equipment WAY more often than when I was doing the yardwork. Sometimes, I'd swear that sabotage was involved. Which would cause more work because I would be looking in the wrong places for problems. Sometimes I felt like I was running a small engine shop for two problematic customers.

@@ericpigg2689 I try ever so hard to just walk away and gain my composure. Often enough just cooling off makes things work so much better. I am 56 years old. I have broken things beyond repair I have a very violent temper. I try to walk away, I don't want to break it, and I am getting to the age where blowing up can cause medical issues that you cannot return from. These days I start getting irritated, I get up and go do something else for a while. I HAVE to for my own healths sake.

Good Vid. At my shop the first thing I do is pour the gas out of the machine into a mason jar. Then while its sitting to separate I check for spark and other things. I then come back and check the jar for water, trash and sawdust. That will tell me about the filter and the screen in the carb. Helps save time.

Finally had to break out my string trimmer yesterday....was relieved when it started on the 2nd pull. Always a nice start to summer. LOL

I feel your pain...replaced a carb last year on my push mower, hit a root this year and did my best to straighten out the shaft, then the carb started allowing fuel to flood through. Rebuilt the carb on my riding mower, added a quality fuel filter and fuel cut off, it ran fine. A few weeks later, it acts like it isn't getting any fuel....yes I turned the cut off back on. Always something. Bought a new electric mower, but the battery doesn't do the whole yard.

Took my breath away! I learned more there than I'll be able to remember. If this is your first vido of this type it is a great idea.

    I feel this.
My full-time work is swamped, & my part time mowing is OVER FULL now. Doing my absolute best to get there, & get my mowing caught up. Turning new clients down now, not sure if thats good or bad?
Keep slugging them out you eventually get caught up.
