    I really liked this video. Personally I'm a christian, but also very into science, and specially physics and biology. In my experience, it's very diffifult to have a friendly discussion about God with other non-religious people. And I guess non-religious people feel the same way about it. Therefore it really pleased me to listen to you in this calm and respectful manner. I really hope that these questions will be discussed more in the future, and that we stop shying away from them.

    My issue with atheism vs theism is this- does it really matter? If a "insert religion here" follows their religious code and lives a life honouring to his/her deity, and then dies...what has been lost? The person (religious generalisation incoming) has tried their hardest to be honest, kind, generous, a loving spouse, a good parent etc. with the belief that they will be rewarded after death. When they die, and if they were correct, they get the reward they seek, but if they were wrong and no God exists, they won't know about it and thus won't be capable of feeling regret or shame about it, but will still have lived a good life that has benefited others. Of course, this view is ignoring the radicals of any group of people which usually makes up the minority view. Just a thought.

    There's room for God? You're making room for God by putting him/her/it into the unknown which is for all intents and purposes infinite. So, no matter how much we discover, there'll still be something to find out. Is that where you put God? Well, that's just convenient, isn't it? Haven't we already figured out that knowledge DOES come with time. What you're doing is putting a name on the unknown. And that's a silly excuse that stems from people's need to not offend others. Agnosticism is just that and scientists who still cling on this ever-shrinking idea of God, frankly, I could never take seriously. Religion has never been, isn't, and will NEVER been on equal footing with Science because religion doesn't exist without humans and our insecurities as far as purpose and death go, but science is just a language that we use as a tool to understanding anything, it's knowledge, and that exists even if there is no brain to process it.

    I'm an evangelical Christian with a Bachelor's degree in Biblical Studies, so I obviously believe in God. There are several reasons why I do, but for me the most convincing element cannot be answered by Science. And I'm not one saying that Science is the bane of Religion's existence. I also believe in molecules-to-man Evolution, and that Science and faith can and do coexist quite harmoniously.
    The questions that I am talking about are metaphysical questions: Why are we here? Why do we have emotions? Why do we practice virtues like selflessness, charity, love, peacefulness, and more? If we exist only by chance, then we are also sustained only by chance. But we choose to go against the flow of natural selection and help each other to thrive and flourish. Faith answers these questions, and the existence of a God for there to be faith about answers these questions.

      +Graham McCarthy
      "Why are we here? Why do we have emotions? Why do we practice virtues like selflessness, charity, love, peacefulness, and more?"
      I wouldn't necessarily call these "metaphysical" questions, but rather "philosophical", and while science may not have concrete, satisfying answers, it can certainly shed light on them without invoking the supernatural.
      "Why are we here?"
      This one can be interpreted multiple ways, but IME it usually means "Why does humankind exist?" Science answers this one as easily as for any other species on Earth: we fought our way into an ecological niche and haven't been forced out of it yet.
      The other interpretations that come to mind involve being more specific about "we" and/or "here":
      "Why are _we_ (you and I) here?" In a word: chance. The semi-random process that mixed our respective parents' genes together just happened to spit out the combinations that made us, then the arbitrary social situations we've lived through shaped our personalities into what they are today. A series of unique-yet-mundane events.
      "Why are we _here_ (on _this_ planet, in _this_ orbit, around _this_ star)?" Because the condition necessary for our existence would've been wrong somewhere else, thus we _couldn't_ be there. If the planet _hadn't_ been suitable for our sort of life, we wouldn't have evolved here to be able to ask the question.
      "Why do we have emotions?"
      I'll assume you've got a basic familiarity with neurochemistry, so you know that emotions are caused by chemical changes in the brain. And these changes obviously affect behavior, and are often triggered by external stimuli. Apparently, organisms that have these sorts of complex input-response loops tend to be more effective at surviving and reproducing, and so the trait is selected for over time.
      If you mean "Why do we _experience_ emotions?", then what you should ask first is "Why to we experience _anything_?" or rather "Why are we _conscious_ and/or _sentient_?" I must concede that science as yet has no answer for these questions yet, but I fail to see the justification for replacing "we don't know" with "god".
      "Why do we practice virtues like selflessness, charity, love, peacefulness, and more?"
      Selflessness and charity have been observed in non-human animals to varying extents. Numerous examples show that creatures tend to survive better when they work together. Even bacteria form mutually-beneficial colonies. As more complex minds emerge from more complex brains, the drives to cooperate also become more complex and nuanced. I'd include love here too, as it's yet another way to encourage social ties and the cooperation that comes with it.
      Not really sure what you mean by "peacefulness" in this context, so I've got no response to that one.

      Actually, most of us regardless of which country we're from were at one point, personally for me in middle school, indoctrinated into the theory of evolution and had it shoved down our throats as fact by our science teachers. Anyone who dared to disagree with or raise any notion that the THEORY of evolution is so absurdly improbably (and therefore impossible) was given a failing grade. The militant atheists that hold every principle in the THEORY of evolution as fact are the same ones that refuse to think for themselves and instead accept without critical thinking the THEORY of evolution told to them by their 7th grade science teachers.

      Many scientists think god has manipulated the universe using science to reach his/her/its goals. This requires a very complex discussion on predestination that very few people understand due to what can often look like contradictions, but are obviously not if thought through logically.
      Scientists who think a god is not sentient are not usually god believers, they just think there is a force yet undiscovered by science. A god by definition is also a person.

      Firstly: The god of Islam is not a human, but he is a "person" in the reality that he makes decisions and has a personality. If he were not a perosn then he would be easily manipulated... which according to Islam would be blasphemy.
      So he is a person becasue he has a personality and is capable of making decisions (although on a vaster scale than a human).
      Likewise all gods ever conceived by humans are persons as well... but not necessarily human.
      Secondly: Darwin's theory of natural selection had no proofs, this is true. i never said he had proofs. i was pointing out that Darwin had a belief in a supernatural entity, although not necassarily the Christian one.
      Natural selection now has plenty of proof now that we have tested it, although none of that was during Darwin's life, and the theory no longer matches Darwin's theory exactly.

    To be honest I really hate it when Atheists quote directly whatever the Bible or the Quran says and immediately interpret them in whatever views they have on the verses of the Quran. You are not a person who practices the religion, nor are you a person who fully learns about the religion. Quoting with the wrong context will also bring any scientific fact wrong. For example if a person who is not an expert in Science, suddenly reads that "Humans are closely related to apes" or "Humans are 50% bananas", of course he/she would think that what the scientific fact is saying is bogus and wrong. He/she would at least need to hear the explanation coming from the scholars on what exactly does it mean by those two statements? In all fairness to people with religion, treat them the same way you want to treat any other Atheists and listen to what they want to say about the religion. If YOUR interpretation of THEIR religion is wrong, then accept it. If from the start you have a wrong interpretation of the religion because you are ignorant in trying to understand what exactly do their holy book means in each particular verses, then you are no better than ignorant extremists who interpret the holy books because of your lack of knowledge or just because you want to use it for your own benefit.

    • @luffy7537
      @luffy7537 Před 9 lety +7

      Greg Knight Honestly yes, I concede that there are a lot sects for religions sadly. But it is unfair that if an Atheist thinks that "there are just too many I should make my own interpretation". You're not getting the correct idea of the religion, and immediately you argue on the wrong basis. One way of understanding a religion properly is of course to look at the scholars in a religion. To know which scholar is highly respected in a religion is really not that hard. And of course the scholars' views on different issues might be different, but the views on the fundamentals of the religion would most likely be the same. And I say this in all honesty, for example for Islam, before you go and try to understand or research on your own the verses in the Quran about wife beatings being permissable in Islam (just an example since non-believers like to discuss this so much) you should learn the basics of Islam first. You can't understand Physics or Chemistry without first learning the basics of Science can you?

    • @luffy7537
      @luffy7537 Před 9 lety +5

      Victor Morales
      I mean you can say, "Let there be light = big bang", but you're ignoring the verses before and after it.
      "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night.And there was evening and there was morning, the first day."
      If "let there be light" is the big bang, this lets break down the verses.
      Heavens and the earth were created.
      The earth was empty, but there was water.
      Big bang occurs
      So what you're saying is
      1. Universe and earth with water on it
      2. Big Bang
      I don't think that's how it works.

I felt vulnerable and different for not having a mother so I started lying, saying my mother was working and couldn't come to pick me up. It was the first time I started thinking of a mother and my fantasy went wild. One day I would say she was a hairdresser, one day a lawyer... I'm not sure how long it went on, but one day still in first grade, I was sitting on a rock when a male-loving voice was speaking clearly in my mind saying. " you are starting to believe in a mother who does not exist" "lying brings you away from your reality" " speak the truth, live in the truth". Although I was only 6 years old every cell in my body KNEW I had heard the PURE truth and agreed to that information and decided I would only speak the truth, I know that in that moment my life took a turn for the better. +Jeff - Agreed. I don't necessarily disbelieve in God, but as soon as I hear people describing him/her/it, my gag reflex usually starts to kick in. In Tibetan Buddhism there is an expression that sort of equates to god, *tongpa nyi*. It translates roughly as "inconceivable possibility" or "the unlimited capacity for things to arise, change, and disappear." It's the correlate of Zen's "void" and western Buddhists' "emptiness." Is that the same as "god"? I don't know, as everyone seems to have a different meaning for the word. I've been surprised by what some believers say about their concept of god when I've asked then, and because of this I have come to the conclusion that it's arrogant to be atheist, as it suggests that the atheist has omniscience as to all variations of subjective meaning of the word.

    • @Kakashi-nl9cl
      @Kakashi-nl9cl Před 9 lety +1

      +Jeff I hope I would not end up having long discussion on some long controversial topics about Islam.
      I am a Muslim. And according to my faith and Quran, the God of every religion is not different. According to Quran, the God, whether it be Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism or some other religion: God is only one and absolute. But the problem arises when some specific "follower" of a religion attribute something to God which God cannot have (which, according to me,in many cases goes even against there own religious text). For example: it doesn't make sense for God to have a son and to say that God has a begotten son doesn't make sense, as God is so much amazing that it is beyond the capability of limited human mind to even understand God or to say that God has some picture of shape of idol, even that doesn't make sense for me as human limited mind cannot picturize Him. So according to my faith, God is "One" and "Absolute" and even in our religious text it says the same that one can call him with any name, "Say, "Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful. Whichever [name] you call - to Him belong the best names." (Quran 17 : 110)
      And also as for him being beyond the capability of human mind in Quran it is said, "Say: He is Allah, the One and Only; Allah, the Eternal, Absolute; He begetteth not, nor is He begotten; And there is none like unto Him.(Quran 112 : 1-4)
      So according to us as soon as Human try to picturize God with his mind, then he is not God as the human could imagine it. Even the word "He" cannot be used for God. As he is beyond any gender. But this "He" problem for God is more because of translation into English. When read or recited in Arabic, even this gender problem is resolved in arabic language.
      Note: I didn't mean to start any debate. I just wanted to clear my point of view. But yeah I can explain further if someone wants to question anything in respectful way :)

      Arslan Ali The usage of masculine pronouns to refer to God has always bothered me. Don't you think it has a major impact on the way people think about it? When we refer to God as "He" and "Him" we are inadvertently assigning gender to the Unknowable, the Absolute. I understand that cultural tradition leads to usage of the pronoun but in all such cultures there is extreme gender bias in which women are subjugated and males have more authority.

      +Andrew Smith I am not sure where to go with your comment. If a sponge witnesses its actions or anything, than that is a miracle; if not, than the sponges meaning is just biological matter and utility to human beings. As far as a central nervous system, it can account for a complex stimulus and response pattern, but that complex stimulus and response pattern is not entirely descriptive of consciousness. This is just my opinion. Also, I really am not in the mood right now to find out if I would remain conscious if I were dead or alive without a central nervous system.

    Believing in an Almighty God means nothing,because it is easy to accept or deny a deity with no effort involved. Walking in faith and embracing grace to love my Lord God and love my neighbor is the challenge in my life. I have faith in God because I have peace that transcends all understanding, strength in my doubt, and some of my prayers that are answered and some are yet unfulfilled. I don't know why bad things happen beyond the fact that humans can choose to do destructive things with their free will and this Earth is wild and unyielding. Yet I still trust God. Science and Religion don't conflict! The conflict arises between 3 types of people: 1. Those who don't know God 2. Those who don't understand the scientific method 3. Those who comprehend neither God nor Science. I can understand why people can question the existence of a loving God, but beyond the chemicals and hormones, there is a reason we all desire to love and be loved.

      +Henri-Ansel Vallee whoah, hold up there man. If you're saying those words, you don't look at context of verses or understand the connected threaded message of the bible. The bible is a cultural document, not a law document. Parts of that book _are_ cultural law for a certain people at a certain time. God didn't say to himself "Ok I need to fix up the culture of these people, then we can proceed..." No he comes as he is to a person or people as they are. None of that stuff you said is valid because, even to a Christian, the Bible is not Law. No, the law is written on the heart of the Christian, anyone who beats anyone with a Bible for any reason doesn't get it. And if you believe that makes me or anyone a bad Christian, well I don't much care about your belief...

I have read the entire book through at face value, and I don't agree with it. Sorry to tell you this, but there is no man made God that exists. Your conscience, your interpretation of The Bible is just that. There are people who claim to be part of the same faith who believe differently than you do with the same level of conviction. So what makes your faith correct? There are so many things in the history of the world to learn about. For me it is a waste of time to read any religious material. At the same time, if praying four times a day brings you to a place spiritually, great. But don't think that your God is better than someone else's.

    at the 7:00 minute mark, he mentions a day to God versus a day to Man. Science by definition means "the accumulation of knowledge." If knowledge lacks truth then how complete is that knowledge?
    2nd Peter 3:8 Do not be ignorant of this one thing, a day to God is but 1,000 years as 1,000 years is to one day.
    The farther you get from a gravitational source, the slower time is affected by that source. An extraterrestrial being of such technological ability would only need to travel far enough away from Earth in order to monitor it and us more efficiently.
    If this same God created us in His image and His likeness then He must clearly resemble the image He has given us. A copy of an original may be a lesser quality, but it still resembles that which it is derived from; i.e. the source code/material.

      that actually does not fit into the "God of the gaps" theory. in the paradox described here is a situation where in some odd turn of events a primitive civilization knew the truth in regards to quantum mechanics and the gravitational effect on time 2000 years before science ever grasped or proved the concept as a reality. so it wasn't that man inserted God till science figured out what the truth was. it was that man had the truth given from God as the Bible would attest 2 millennia before that question was even quantifiable and then science confirmed that God-given truth later. it would be one thing if they just said we don't know so it must be God but the reality was that they did know and that knowledge, according to the Bible, came from God, then later it was confirmed to be correct. a beautiful example of God and science being in Harmony even spanning 2 thousand years before that harmony could be proved.

      False doctrines when "laid besides the word of God". Oh yeah, because a theologician, monk and spiritual father has no more authority in interpreting the Bible than the John Doe who converted yesterday to "Evangelican Christianism" or some other BS. The word of God is not a novel ! It is not a technical manual ! IT has to be interpreted by people who know what they are talking about. But of course, it is always confortable to criticise those who know and who have a particular authority.

      Martial Kintu that's the thing Religion is man made therefore it's not what GOD wants. He wants us to love and cheerish him practically every day not just sunday or whenever day, and he wants us to ENJOY the time we have with him thats why he gave us a spirit, not to just go to church every Sunday thinking, if I don't go to church i will go to hell but actually ENJOYING the precious time we have with him.the bible states GOD wants his people to stay together in oneness. but sadly denominations and religion is bringing us apart. Man is trying to change Christianity and add their own beliefs instead of reading the bible (GOD'S WORD). For example, the actual bible in Hebrew translated to English says Jesus is GOD and that they aren't two different beings that they are Triune (GOD as The son Jesus and the holy spirit) but people like the Jehovah's witnesses CHANGED the bible GOD'S OWN WORD and added their own beliefs saying GOD and Jesus are two different people, in their humanity they are good people but spiritually need to be taught the actual word of GOD. GOD can and will change your life all you have to do is contact him, ask for forgiveness of sins, recognize that we are ALL sinners because of Adam and eves decision to go against GOD... and you will be saved do this practically and you will live a good Christian life. Jesus is coming soon do not get sucked in by the things of this world.

    I like to think about gravity. I often get headaches thinking about black holes, but gravity is actually a very weak force, relatively speaking. A magnet small enough to fit in a pocket could easily have a stronger grip on a paper clip than the entire Earth's gravity. And as far as we can tell, gravity exists in the form it does simply for its own sake. That being said, gravity has literally been the force that put the universe together. Without gravity, life could not exist, not only as we know it, but probably in any form. And yet, it does, and we'll probably never know why. That's either an incredible coincidence, or something divine. Personally, I like to think the latter, but no one knows for sure.

    I personally believe in God, however I am also a scientist at heart in that I am fascinated by how our universe work, when I was in high school I went to a Christian school and my favorite class was physics and my teacher was a believer as well and the thing I learned to most from him is this: science is mans way of describing the works of gods hand, laws that he put in place are describe by observation. This has always given me comfort when I have discovered things that may go contrary to literal interpretation of the bible. 6000 yrs ago people only had a limited view of the world now we have a wider view however for every new thing we find it leads to more question and I feel like that just reinforces how limited our view is. In my personal life I have seen god move in ways that are downright impossible to others may seem as coincidence but it happens over and over again, applying observation to these this reaffirm my faith there is a god. If someone believes otherwise I believe they have a right to believe that because I have tried in my life to make sense of the things that have happened. That being said I feel there would be alot more harmony in this world if people viewed the world the way this video presents this subject if we seek understanding from each other we see ourselves in each other.

      +ozijay3000.vs.Aliens Wait, how does your story relate to "atheists deny their knowledge of the existence of god" (or whatever it is youre trying to say) ? It seems like the moral of the story is "faith/belief cannot come as a result of miracles"In this case, the atheists would be right in denying miracles, tho for different reasons. in fact, even believers should be denying miracles, for belief based on supernatural events is belief that has too little grounding, and the ease of disappearing as soon as the miracle is gone.

      ***** Actually, the Bible says "God hardened the Pharaoh's heart", so in a way, he knew that it would never end smoothly.
      This course of action actually explains a lot of events that ppl label (somewhat accurately) as "inconsistent" or "why the f would god do that?!"

      *****"why would you follow evil" ?? sorry, i dont think i understand the context for that question.
      At the moment, i was addresing your point of "if God couldnt persuade the pharoah, then he's not omniscient" with my counterpoint of "what if he knew that the pharoah would never be persuaded, but took 'persuasive' actions anyway?"

    I've always stated these same things when ask about belief in God, for me the naturalist materialistic views just don't really answer all the questions. I've hypothesized that because God created the everything "he" is not subject to the same natural laws that we are; just as we humans are not bound by the limit of the digital "realm" that we created and thus "he" does not need a creator or origin, having no beginning or end. As creatures that have definite beginnings we can't wrap our heads around the idea that a being could simply exist without cause, however we're imposing the the limits of our own perspective on the the unknown reaches of existence and that is where I find God.

    • @evilcowboy
      @evilcowboy Před 3 lety +2

      Hows this for a hypothesis for God, we all reside within his consciousness and we are merely the product of a thought process. It literally explains every question of why we can't see God, can communicate with God and why he is all powerful. Thats what theory I had, who gave it to me was God when I asked. You are right God is not bound to the materialistic laws of the world, exactly how we are not bound to them in our own imaginations as well. Seems we really were created within the image of God.
