I work for the NHS and you have certainly explained the state of the nhs and transgender healthcare well. I would imagine the NHS waiting list will only grow as more people go private as, in my experience, the surgeons who work in private healthcare are the same ones who work in the nhs. What needs to be done is to encourage more surgeons to do these procedures, especially bottom surgery as, again from my experience, breast surgeons are not that uncommon. My bottom jaw fell to the floor when you said that the first appointment, not surgery, but first appointment is around 5 years, that is a lifetime!! (I’m still gob smacked). Yes you would need at less 6 weeks recovery for bottom surgery and no lifting anything heavier than a half full kettle.
I'm a cis female in the US, I appreciate your honesty in your journey. I hope all countries and health care companies get on board with supporting people without any exclusions.
A close friend went to Thailand about 5 years ago for bottom surgery, because in New Zealand our wait list for surgery is 40 years. The only surgeon who did bottom surgery here retired, so that list is probably many years longer now, and also means that bottom surgery privately isn't an option either. Couple flights to Thailand with surgery costs, plus flights for her family member to support her post surgery, accommodation for the 3 months she had to be there until she could travel home again, and you have a hugely prohibitive cost for most trans people. It breaks my heart, truly. I'm NB and have considered going down the medical route but all these things put me off. And yet pearl clutchers still claim that children are being chopped up willy nilly because they "choose" to change genders overnight. Keep waving that flag Jude. You're amazing.

You are not alone. I am the proud Belgian mom of a trans daughter. She was born in Belgium but never actually lived there. Trying to get her birth certificate changed to reflect her real gender and name. Bit of a challenge since we live in the US.
@@momonwallstreet must be because you live in us? Here in Belgium we have a super easy process to change names and gender. We recently even got the gender mention deleted from the id cards to not stigmatize the trans and non binary people
@@Fierdre The issue is mainly that my daughter has a Belgian birth certificate, a Belgian and Australian passport and an American Green Card. In all these countries, it is relatively easy to get name and gender changed but figuring out the right order of doing this is a bit challenging.
It's so great that you have the courage to make videos like this. I learnt so much about transitioning that I hadn't considered before. I have experience of the problems with mental health care in Britain (ie they don't have enough money to properly care for people) which had a devastating effect on my late husband. Although I am trying not to increase my stash this year, I will definitely be helping you in other ways. You're amazing!

Watching your video reminded me to call our employer-funded insurance here in the US to find out which clinics are in-network for my son’s gender affirming care. (He’s 8 now but once puberty begins, he will start blockers.) Well, our insurance flat out excludes any coverage for transgender-related care. So we’ll be fighting that! Let the appeals begin! Dear Jude, I love you and I am sending you so very many virtual hugs. As a parent of a trans teen, I see how hard it is on so many levels from her perspective. If I win the lotto, I've got you covered. For now I will continue to donate to your Kofi and I will be a voice in the USA for trans people in as many ways as I can. Part of what I am grateful for in my life is that I am able to be a parent that my kids need. So many kids don't have that. I will buy yarn and destash and all of the things. I have a friend that also has been navigating the system for a number of years now; and it's positively ludicrous the hoops you both have to go through with the NHS. Yes, there are hoops here in Canada (also stemming from the fact that there is 1 -- only one -- clinic that does lower surgery in the entire freakin' country), but I don't think there's anything quite like the waitlists you are describing. I was trying to do my own research to see what it would be like here, and the waitlists quoted on the websites don't seem as bad (max 2 years)? But I'm not a person seeking this type of treatment, so I don't know what it actually is. It also varies widely in terms of costs and wait times per province. Does it violate CZcams's Community Guidelines to shout expletives at the Tories (And really, any governmental power that attempts to limit the rights of trans people)? Because I would really love to give them a peace of my mind. I 24 weeks pregnant and full of hormonal rage and I am not afraid to use it.

I must say, I’m super happy that your in Scotland while going through this, and not the USA. I say that bc of the many issues playing out there right now, and the many times you’ve mentioned that you would love to live there. That would be heartbreaking for you to be pushed against the wall so dramatically now that your on your way to you. To help me understand how things are for you, I’ve been watching some documentaries on the issues and steps for a trans male and female. Jude, you are such a special person and I appreciate the time you have taken to share your journey to your true self. The UK position in not encouraging transgender healthcare is deplorable. I live in Texas and believe me things can be a lot worse. The terrible Republican stranglehold here in so many backward ideas (book banning, women healthcare including choice, rewriting history etc) now includes a push to punish parents who seek to help their kiddos receive transgender care being accused/hounded as child abuse. No actual law has been passed but the folks in Austin (capital of Texas) has started down this road. Texas is a beautiful State and has many good qualities, but its government is not one of them. We do what we can and it is an uphill battle. So that is my rant. Take good care all good things you wish for will come to you.

I live in Canada and we also have free healthcare but I imagine the system is quite similar to the NHS, in that you could access your transitioning treatments and care through government funded healthcare but there would be significant wait times and lots of hoops to jump through. Here in sweden the political debate about trans health care in the news has recently seemed to focus on the few people who regret their treatments and surgery, which sadly seem to bias the whole process towards implementing even more hurdles before the trans person gets to finally become their true self. Do you find that to be the ”trend” in the UK as well? Best of luck with your whole process, there are tons of us who are rooting for you and support you!
I jus discovered your channel but am thrilled to see the trans community is represented in the knitting world. I am a cis female but my oldest is trans non-binary and we have already been discussing top surgery and how that might work here in the US with our health insurance. It’s interesting (albeit depressing) to hear how the health care systems compare. We all have to find a way to do better! I wish you well and will be supporting you as much as as I can, especially your lovely yarn.
I have so much empathy for your journey. I hope you know that your openness is so important to trans people and non trans people everywhere. There is too much silence and stigma on the physical challenges to transitioning. Not to mention the mental health toll to the obstacles, like cost and waiting time. More advocacy is a public service. Breaking the silence is a public service. Finally, you’re not complaining so no need to apologize for it. If you want to know complaining, I’m available to entertain you with talk of the US system and what happens when you’re a cancer patient and lose your job (and your health insurance). First of all, hug! I cannot even imagine the strength & determination needed to basically put the brakes on your life & do a 180°turn. Dealing w dysmorphia must be quite challenging, both physically and emotionally. I'm glad that so many in the knitting community support your vlogs & are willing to learn & cheer for you. My GP is undergoing the same process; however, I'm incensed at what his hospital is putting him thru. I'm upset, he must be hurt, embarrassed & yeah, bullied by his place of work. Can you believe that as his patient I was called & interviewed by the hospital staff?! Questions were short & horrid in this day & age. Basically, they wanted to know if I had any issues being treated by my former doctor, now transitioning to male? I understand people have different opinions, we all have the right, but just exposing him to all patients out of the blue? Then, I was sent another questionnaire w same purpose, even if worded differently. Then I had a remote consultation & again, I was called AND received a survey, about the same issue. Agghhrrr!!! Human beings don't exist in only in a fingernail, we r a collection of thoughts, emotions, soul, honor, attitude, dreams, so much more than our shell & how we can feel at home in that skin. Again, I might not understand how complex & painful it might be to be put in a specific & assigned spot, but you have my respect because I'm not blind to "fear", those of us might have when we don't understand something or we don't know how to process a drastic change, but one that is absolutely personal to another human being. I also send you a hug to let you kno someone at the other side if th Atlantic is sending you positive vibes & believes you have every right & reasons for conducting your life as you see fit. If you are not hurting or depriving another of their same rights, no one has the right to invade your privacy, nor deprive you of your choices.
Hi Jude, thank you for sharing! I am sorry to hear that, while intentions seem to be good (coverage by NHS) practise is far from that. When you have a heart condition, you don't want to wait 5 years for a consultation. When you have genderdysforia of course you don't want to wait 5 years either! As I understand it for at least a number of people, the journey to their coming out can take time, years. Like you said, waiting years and years for treatments and such, sounds honestly horrible. I have heard someone explain they felt trapped in a body they could not relate to and to think that there are ways to change that for the better and then to hit such a waiting list....

Dear Jude, I love you and I am sending you so very many virtual hugs. As a parent of a trans teen, I see how hard it is on so many levels from her perspective. If I win the lotto, I've got you covered. For now I will continue to donate to your Kofi and I will be a voice in the USA for trans people in as many ways as I can. Part of what I am grateful for in my life is that I am able to be a parent that my kids need. So many kids don't have that. I will buy yarn and destash and all of the things. Your ability to so beautifully and clearly share your journey will surely open hearts and minds.
Thank you so much for sharing all of this, Jude. I have a friend that also has been navigating the system for a number of years now; and it's positively ludicrous the hoops you both have to go through with the NHS. Yes, there are hoops here in Canada (also stemming from the fact that there is 1 -- only one -- clinic that does lower surgery in the entire freakin' country), but I don't think there's anything quite like the waitlists you are describing. I was trying to do my own research to see what it would be like here, and the waitlists quoted on the websites don't seem as bad (max 2 years)? But I'm not a person seeking this type of treatment, so I don't know what it actually is. It also varies widely in terms of costs and wait times per province.
Does it violate CZcams's Community Guidelines to shout expletives at the Tories (And really, any governmental power that attempts to limit the rights of trans people)? Because I would really love to give them a peace of my mind. I 24 weeks pregnant and full of hormonal rage and I am not afraid to use it.

Hi Jude. I too am invested in your journey. I’ve been following you for about 4 yrs now, and I’m a big fan of yours. I must say, I’m super happy that your in Scotland while going through this, and not the USA. I say that bc of the many issues playing out there right now, and the many times you’ve mentioned that you would love to live there. That would be heartbreaking for you to be pushed against the wall so dramatically now that your on your way to you. To help me understand how things are for you, I’ve been watching some documentaries on the issues and steps for a trans male and female. I truly wish you all the best in your transition, your life, and your business. I read a couple of comments before typing this, and how awesome that you can be there for others who are also feeling the same. Nothing like a good community. Jude, you are such a special person and I appreciate the time you have taken to share your journey to your true self. The UK position in not encouraging transgender healthcare is deplorable. I live in Texas and believe me things can be a lot worse. The terrible Republican stranglehold here in so many backward ideas (book banning, women healthcare including choice, rewriting history etc) now includes a push to punish parents who seek to help their kiddos receive transgender care being accused/hounded as child abuse. No actual law has been passed but the folks in Austin (capital of Texas) has started down this road. Texas is a beautiful State and has many good qualities, but its government is not one of them. We do what we can and it is an uphill battle. So that is my rant. Take good care all good things you wish for will come to you.

I live in Canada and we also have free healthcare but I imagine the system is quite similar to the NHS, in that you could access your transitioning treatments and care through government funded healthcare but there would be significant wait times and lots of hoops to jump through. I wish you all the best with your journey.

Thank you for this very informative podcast! I’m a cis female yarnie from Sweden, and like many others started watching for the yarn but quickly stayed for you and your personality. Here in sweden the political debate about trans health care in the news has recently seemed to focus on the few people who regret their treatments and surgery, which sadly seem to bias the whole process towards implementing even more hurdles before the trans person gets to finally become their true self. Do you find that to be the ”trend” in the UK as well? Best of luck with your whole process, there are tons of us who are rooting for you and support you!

I jus discovered your channel but am thrilled to see the trans community is represented in the knitting world. I am a cis female but my oldest is trans non-binary and we have already been discussing top surgery and how that might work here in the US with our health insurance. It’s interesting (albeit depressing) to hear how the health care systems compare. We all have to find a way to do better! I wish you well and will be supporting you as much as as I can, especially your lovely yarn.
I have so much empathy for your journey. I hope you know that your openness is so important to trans people and non trans people everywhere. There is too much silence and stigma on the physical challenges to transitioning. Not to mention the mental health toll to the obstacles, like cost and waiting time. More advocacy is a public service. Breaking the silence is a public service.
Finally, you’re not complaining so no need to apologize for it. If you want to know complaining, I’m available to entertain you with talk of the US system and what happens when you’re a cancer patient and lose your job (and your health insurance). I can give you complaining. 😀. You’re NOT complaining. You’re EDUCATING. Thank you for that.

I cannot even imagine the strength & determination needed to basically put the brakes on your life & do a 180°turn. Dealing w dysmorphia must be quite challenging, both physically and emotionally. I'm glad that so many in the knitting community support your vlogs & are willing to learn & cheer for you. My GP is undergoing the same process; however, I'm incensed at what his hospital is putting him thru. I'm upset, he must be hurt, embarrassed & yeah, bullied by his place of work. Can you believe that as his patient I was called & interviewed by the hospital staff?! Questions were short & horrid in this day & age. Basically, they wanted to know if I had any issues being treated by my former doctor, now transitioning to male? I understand people have different opinions, we all have the right, but just exposing him to all patients out of the blue? Then, I was sent another questionnaire w same purpose, even if worded differently. Then I had a remote consultation & again, I was called AND received a survey, about the same issue. Agghhrrr!!! Human beings don't exist in only in a fingernail, we r a collection of thoughts, emotions, soul, honor, attitude, dreams, so much more than our shell & how we can feel at home in that skin. Again, I might not understand how complex & painful it might be to be put in a specific & assigned spot, but you have my respect because I'm not blind to "fear", those of us might have when we don't understand something or we don't know how to process a drastic change, but one that is absolutely personal to another human being. I also send you a hug to let you kno someone at the other side if th Atlantic is sending you positive vibes & believes you have every right & reasons for conducting your life as you see fit. If you are not hurting or depriving another of their same rights, no one has the right to invade your privacy, nor deprive you of your choices.
Hi Jude, thank you for sharing! I am sorry to hear that, while intentions seem to be good (coverage by NHS) practise is far from that. When you have a heart condition, you don't want to wait 5 years for a consultation. When you have genderdysforia of course you don't want to wait 5 years either! As I understand it for at least a number of people, the journey to their coming out can take time, years. Like you said, waiting years and years for treatments and such, sounds honestly horrible. I have heard someone explain they felt trapped in a body they could not relate to and to think that there are ways to change that for the better and then to hit such a waiting list....
