Dead battery explosion

  • A vehicle had a battery explode while being jump started. While this does not happen often, it does happen. Safety should always be first when jump starting a vehicle. ALWAYS make the last connection away from the battery on an engine bracket preferably.
    Fortunately, no one was hurt, and the clean up was minimal. A fresh battery installed, and no signs of any electrical issues.

    Good advice. Batteries are so volatile and people have no idea how dangerous they can be and that they contain acid and lead. Thank you sir!

    I was in my house and I heard a louddd bang. My truck was sitting in the driveway, I didn’t realize that’s what it was until I saw a puddle. At first I thought it was coolant and I blew a heater hose but it turns out that my battery blew up. The truck was off and it had been sitting for a couple hours. One of the loudest things I’ve ever heard

    Tow Truck Driver here:
    1. Make the NEG cable connection to the ENGINE, NOT the car body. We're trying to energize the dead car's STARTER motor, not the car stereo.
    2. BEWARE ZERO WIND or BREEZE conditions when making jumper cable connections to a car battery. Without a breeze, hydrogen gas can concentrate a bit. At least make some breeze via waving your hand over the battery right before connecting. NO BREEZE = BAD JU JUBE!

      Juju is the word.
      Good thinking regarding no wind. Interesting. Best to form that spark away from the battery like the man says. Especially in windless weather.

    This is crazy, here because my battery literally blew up in my face tryna jump it, yes it had corrosion, but i heard it making a buzzing noise then i got closer to get a better listen, then boom right in my face, I’m so happy to be alive still. Was just like a bomb going off in my face.

    Thank you for the education and the effort you put into the video. Where you say to hook up the negative cable to some other metal on the car and NOT the negative terminal of the battery itself; does the reason have ANYTHING to do with either the positive or the negative jumper cable at all, or is the issue the potential spark generated when that second (and final) connection is made? If I'm understanding this concept correctly; the safety consideration goal is to put distance between the battery, where explosive hydrogen gas is/may be present in sufficient quantity to be dangerous, and the potential spark generated when the jumper cable? I understand the usual practice of connecting the positive terminal first and then the negative (when jumping a battery), the order of cable connection is not the reason for the comment/question.

    • @MichaelLindquist
      @MichaelLindquist Před 2 lety +4

      Apack, Thanks for your compliments, and further questions. 1. Positive, needs to be positive, meaing, you can only hook up the positive jumper to the positive cable. You are correct about the second(last) connection, that it NEEDS to be away from the battery, because there will ALWAYS be a spark of some sort, and you need to be far away as you can from the battery. Another note to make is make sure your positive connection is super good, (when you clamp the cable on, rock it back and forth a bit, to make a good connection, and be sure it will stay in place) as if it is not, a spark can be made there, defeating the whole purpose of attaching the ground elsewhere. Further, with the ground vs positive: the ground is anywhere typically metal is found on a vehicle. Engine block, engine brackets (best) shock towers where the bolts come through, and any sheet metal that may be unpainted. This being a ground, there is no live voltage, but there are only a handful of positive contact points- the battery, back of the alternator, a fuse or junction box etc. You do not want to hit these with anything conductive, and hit a ground. I am a mechanic, not an engineer, so there are many deeper thoughts on electricity flow. Conventional theory is pos to neg, electron theory is flow from negative to positive. Hope this helps!

    About 30 years ago I worked in a service station , a guy pulled up and asked my boss if he could get a jump start , he had no money and after begging my boss for 10 minutes my boss agreed to take a second hand battery off the re-charger and said to the guy do you know how to hook it up, he said yes no worries I know what I'm doing, so my boss sent me down with the battery and cables and said to me that he knows how to connect it all and I was to just wait with the guy and collect the battery and cables after he got his car started, anyway he hooked up the battery and instantly it EXPLODED, so loud I've never been able to shake being very nervice when ever I jump start a car, I think it was because the battery had just come off a charger and the gases had built up inside and as soon as it sparked it exploded , only people that have been next to one when it goes off would understand how loud it was , I got covered in acid but washed it off , my clothes desintergrated more every wash.

      That is the safest way, but you can go to the battery on the good car, need to make sure you have a solid connection. It is typically the dead /ng battery. This is really about that last connection, (so long as other connections are secure) that creates a park, where hydrogen gas is present.

      @@Wiltonautoandtire *spark. Got you. The old battery is the majority safety concern as it is where gases are typically released. J' ai eu un cas similaire, une batterie profondément déchargée en hiver (8 Volts) et rechargée sur un trajet de 650 kms.
    Elle a exposée 6 mois plus tard, le lendemain d' un autre grand trajet, elle a explosée du côté de la borne négative...
    Depuis, je surveille la tension aux bornes de la batterie, et je roule ou je recharge la batterie, si la voiture ne fonctionne pas souvent.
    Pensez à bien rincer le bac de la batterie, et dessous l' emplacement de cette dernière, car l' acide des batteries, est corrosifs pour la peinture, et les métaux souillés.
    Bon courage.

    • @Wiltonautoandtire
      @Wiltonautoandtire  Před 3 lety +10

      Hi Lucy, so when you make that last connection, there is virtually ALWAYS a spark, which is what ignites the gasses and makes it go BOOM! By making the last connection on a bracket etc. away from the battery the spark is not near the battery greatly reducing the chance of an explosion
      Hope this helps understand
