Let's HAND SEW A Skirt | Great for Beginners!

- So often I see the question from beginner sew-ers (sewists?) "What should my first project be?" Well, how about a skirt you can sew entirely without a machine? While this project does require a little knowledge of hand-sewing, it's completely doable for any newbie AND it's something you can wear when you're done.
If you do this with a thrifted bedsheet, you'll save some time and some money. Let me know how it went for you and I hope you find this useful!

It's so hard to find a project-based tutorial for hand sewing that features modern day clothing, so I really appreciate this.
“we don’t iron things” yep this is the perfect tutorial for me 🫠
I love the outcome of ironing. I HATE the process.
I cant NOT iron when Im sewing.
Couldn’t tell you where my iron is. Sorry, not sorry. 😊
Lol!! But I do need to iron while sewing… makes everything look more polished… and then my OCD
God loves you so! John 3:16✝️
This is without a doubt the most relatable sewing tutorial I have ever seen. And now I want to embroider "pleat recklessly" and hang it on my wall.
I think it's a solid motto to live by!
I had this exact same thought
I LOVE that you've reinforced the mantra, the "good enough is just fine", and measuring with string to remove the stress!!! It's often seeing so many technical projects or overcomplicated projects that stop us from thinking we can start. THANK YOU for helping grow the community!
I get so easily overwhelmed with new projects that look complicated, so hopefully this helps other people like me!
Ever since I got a functioning sewing machine I have eschewed hand sewing. WHY would I do something so slowly when I could do it very very fast instead?? But as I watched this video I realized two things: one, handsewing sounds like a great activity to do while watching TV. Second, wearing something I sewed BY HAND sounds pretty much like magic. I’d flounce around all day casting spells and stuff. I have a bedsheet…I may give this a go. Really nice tutorial!
I feel EXACTLY the same way, and being able to recline and still sew is one of the few reasons I hand sew. Also, I can thrift fabric when I'm traveling and make something else to wear.
ALSO using the top folded hem of the sheet as a waistband is inspired.
I am totally blind and most likely will never hand so anything in my entire entire life, but I absolutely 100% love this video
I live with memoryloss, brainfog and other boring stuff. Had to learn almost evertything all over again.. With a brain that functions in a new way and a body that does the same. And most exiting: they to not always get along!
Thank you for reminding me to be patient with myself and let perfection wait its turn. Good enough IS good enough. ❤
I've just come across this tutorial and it's one of the best ever!! I love hand sewing and this is so easy and practical. Thank you!
One thing I’ve realized is that, although you measured your waist with a seam allowance, I should’ve measured around the largest part of my waist (I.e my booty). And then used the waistband with the actual measurement of where I want my skirt to sit. That way the skirt fits around my legs plus lots of room for pleats 😊
I just randomly stumbled across this video while having my morning coffee, trying to avoid today's responsibilities. You inspired me so much. I watched the video once, got up and cut out the skirt panels and waistband from an old tablecloth. Now I'm watching the video again and sewing along with you! I'm a complete newbie to sewing (and am cheating by using a sewing machine, but that thing was expensive, and I plan to get my money's worth out of it). I was thinking I might make the waistband 2 inches longer on each side, then I can overlap them and add a button, and also some snap closures on the other side to keep the little gap closed. Plus, I can adjust the waistband size in case I gain weight (or have a big meal....man, I miss Waffle House).
Thank you so much for this! I have the worst kind of procrastination combined with perfectionism, so this is EXACTLY what I needed. Good enough = good enough 😌
I think making the waistband long is a great modification! I do that sometimes so I can wear skirts when I'm bloated or after eating food! :D
I'm so glad it was helpful and using a machine is NEVER cheating!!
I would definitely wear something like that. Cue useless trivia here! When you talked about your headache and how you forgot about it I read somewhere that hand sewing is a very mindful occupation and very soothing for the soul. It made me think of things I learned in my History of Costume ' lessons at art school and how the ladies of the big manor house in medieval times never sat down without some sewing in their hands - sewing clothes for children or for the men of the house - usually in a room called the "solar" which had the best light - all of them together like a medieval sewing bee. Hope that's not too much information ❤
I’m also a “free-pleater” but The only way I’ve ever made it work is to pin at each end, then in the center, and then halfway between each of those three pins, and then halfway between each of those pins. Depending on how big your waist is (I have to make another couple sets of halfway pins). Once you get to 17, 33, or 64 pins, start folding over the fold sticking up to just before the next pin. When they’re too small, you take out the last two rounds and split the difference into thirds instead. It’s usually perfect. I have to split the difference visually, it’s easier and faster for me, even if it’s not the easiest option for everyone. I hope this helps others out there like me and reduces some frustration for us anxious perfectionists. ❤️
My first sewing project was a skirt! I also made the pattern myself and it took me about 3 months to complete, but I'm so proud of it :D I made it from a beautiful silk fabric that I found in my local charity shop which is green and purple with embroidery, such an amazing find. I am watching this while trying to mend my boyfriends jeans that keep falling apart, it's a very nice video to sew along to :)
Amazing!! And I hope it's one of your favorite things you've made!
@@KatieMakesStuff it certainly is, it's fancy enough to wear it to weddings and other special events 🥰
Awesome sense of humour....which is why I continued to watch the tutorial.
Plus, this is a cool way to sew a skirt.
Thank you.
Thank you so much!
I’ve always loved hand sewing things. When I was young I made little doll pillows and dresses and now I enjoy doing little fixes for clothes and stuffed animals. I really want to try making this skirt as a first “big” project! Thank you!
Sighs, why no matter how simple a project. We always have to add something? Ha, I'm in the long stretch. Hemming my skirt now. Thank you for your encouraging tutorial.
First, I had to have pockets. Then, I miscalculated the waistband. Had to undo half the gathers. Regather, resew. And of course, the fabric I wanted to use had no hem.
You can do it!
Hahaha, I improvised. I will finish. Ended up using a safety pin at the waistband. Still, it's almost to big? But I wore it Friday to my adopted sons wedding. Happy with the out come. Hope everyone else's turned out well.
Your oath made me genuinely cry ❤❤ i suffer from executive disfunction and autism (big big sensory issues) and i can never finish my projects
I'm only 2 minutes in, and I have already decided that I need to save this for the pledge at the beginning. I'll be replaying this as needed :)
I know how to sew, I was just watching this to feed the special interest goblin while I knit a jumper, but that pledge hit me hard. AuDHD makes it hard to keep going on tedious projects, or keep going if I mess up, and I literally just had to frog an upsetting amount of this jumper sleeve because I’d done my decreases too close together. That pledge though genuinely gave me the motivation to just get going again, rather than dodging it and sulking about the lost hours. Thank you 💚
I have remind myself of what I said with just about every project! Fighting the ADHD slump is TOUGH sometimes.
I was going along with the video, and then I got lost, so I need to watch it through to see what is going on, and then go through it with the video. I got lost when you said "front and back panels" 😅
I love this tutorial SO MUCH! One suggestion though, as I’m easily overwhelmed and would absolutely screw up which piece of yarn is which. A technique I’ve seen before using yarn, twine, or string, is to use only one string. Make a knot on one end and the make knots where the two measurements are, or to use other pieces of yarn so that you get two different colors so it’s easier to remember which is which.
Love your attitude. Make things look perfectly doable and not a big deal, as it should be. Much appreciation...and I will do this project...soon.
Thank you for this great and easy tutorial! I have been searching for hours for just one like this; hand sewing, inexpensive, simple, cotton, encouraging, practical,...thank you.
I'm so glad you found it helpful! I'll work on other projects for hand sewing useful things!
I'm so glad I found your channel 😄. I haven't hand sewn since high school about 1987 lolol. I'm ready to sew my clothes, no machine... 🤪 your video was a wonderful reminder, more detail than my "teacher".. this was great
I'm so glad it was helpful, and I'm glad you landed here!
No gatekeeping, only encouragement, very nice job.
I like this! Sometimes simple is best.
I hand sewed a mumu in 1998 and in 2022 dress is still usable. I made a skirt by hand as a kid but I never used it.
The mumu sounds so comfy!!
love the vibes. not just easy tutorial also the sense of humor make it more fun than it looks 😄
I'm so glad you liked it! Let me know if you have ideas for other tutorials you may want to see.
Love the print on your sheet u used. I like that style of skirt. It is very comfortable to wear. Thank you.
I love it! This is so good. Thank you!
I love your style Katie! Handstitching a skirt sounds so lovely.
It's so relaxing and I feel like I should be in a meadow surrounded by birds and butterflies (or on the couch in my PJs).
So inspiring!!!
Loved this! Great tutorial, you made it seem very doable 😊
Thank you! This is still my favorite method of making skirts. They get better every time I make them.
I LOVE THIS.
This is great! I just made this skirt from some cotton and it turned out great! I was really looking for a simple but cute project to get some sewing success after completely botching a linen dress. I did make it on the machine since my hand sewing skills are abysmal. Thanks so much for this tutorial!
I’m so going to try this
Brand new to sewing and I love this video!! Actually beginner friendly, thank you 😊
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for sharing.
VERY helpful!
Thank u so much ..thanks to your video about sewing , u solved the 'creating things from scratch ' riddle for me
finally! your video just got recommended to me and i absolutely love it! i'm an expert knitter, and sometimes i sew things by hand, but i always thought, maybe i should buy a sewing machine. but after seeing this video, i think i can keep handsewing and be happy with it. no pressure of switching to the machine. and i finally landed in that sweet spot of the youtube algoritm were genuine people who just do their things are popping up in my feed. love seeing more videos from you. cheers, jacky 😊
Thanks I needed this!
I love it!
ohh! all those years I thought I was missing knowledge of sewing but now I know, I need cat in sewing supply!!🐱
It's amazing how useful Craft Cats can be!
OMG, thank you so much.
Great video! I would like to give this a try!
I have a sewing machine I could use but I'm afraid of it, lol. So just going to do hand sewing for a while! Thank you so much for sharing your skill and creating this fun video!
You can do it!
and I have had a few nasty surprises!! This was fun!
As a drag queen. Id loveee to see you do something dragstyle for a tutorial hahaha
Sequin Gloves or a easy slide on puffy sleeves or something ahahha
Total newb here
Hmmm...I've never even thought of that angle, but I'm sure I can come up with something. Thank you for the idea!
I love the pledge❤️😍😍
It's important to lay out all expectations in advance 🤣
I love love love that this video is actually usable for people (me) whose sewing equipment consists of: one sewing machine from the 60s, a few coloured pencils and a childrens scissor, as well as old curtain for fabric. Like,, u are cool!! I can actually do this stuff! I dont have to buy A Very Specific Sewing Thing That Is Used a Very Specific Way and Is Also Probably Very Expensive. So yeah, thank u!!!
Thank you so much! I'm so glad this is something you find useful, and if you have any suggestions for other projects you'd like to learn, I'm happy to try to figure them out.
I am always stuffing my sewing machine up! It’s a real turn off and by the time I get the machine sorted out, I’m over it. Totally. Thanks heaps for showing me a way that doesn’t turn into a knotted, thready disaster.
I suppose a snap wouldn’t hurt in the area that is open if you don’t plan to wear a tucked in top.
Thank you! Deffinetly gonna use this for an assignment at school, but there I'll actually be required to use a sewing machine for the majority of it, but uuhhhhhhh,, I'll probably find a way 👍
If you have to use a machine, I would recommend following these steps but making the hand stitches longer so they act like basting stitches. Then you use the machine for the permanent seams and remove the basting afterwards.
I think i might try to use this in the future, but idk i really want to make a skirt for this cosplay i want to do, but im so new to this and don't know where to start ❤
What cosplay are you looking at? I may be able to help?
New suscriber. I really want to learn to sew, just lazy but today i want to be a better version of myself ❤
My friend, you have found a fellow lazy sewist here. If I can find a way around it or a half-way technique to make it look good enough, that's what I'm down for. Welcome and let me know what you'd like to try!
11:27 just realized I have the same tomato pin holder you do 🍅
This makes sewing my own skirt seem accessible. No mean feat from someone who can barely sew on buttons. I'm mostly a jeans kinda gal, but this damn heatwave and your tutorial makes me long to give this a go!
DO IT!! The worst thing that could happen is that it's terrible and you learn what not to do next time.
@@KatieMakesStuff OK, I'm in! Today I took the plunge and went thrifting. I have a sheet in a nice colour, I got needles, and thread. I'm going to do it. And I think I'm going to make my life a bit harder by adding a pocket on the opposite side to the button. Part of my aversion to skirts has been the lack of pockets.
I have nothing to lose, apart from €4 and a lot of knowledge to gain! Thank you for the inspiration. I might drop you a line to let you know how it goes.
love all of this, you, the dogs, the skirt... all of it, except the blasted weather! OK so could we add a triangle behind the opening to create a safeguard?!
Yes!! That would be a great solution to that problem!
This video is for me!!! Alll the feelings hahahahaha
Love it … 🧵🧵🧵🙌🙌👆
Holy shit. This might actually happen.
DO IT!!
Hi good speech
😀😀
amazing tut, thank you so much! i had one question though: do i *have* to sew the two panels together? would it be enough if i just have a panel that's 2×waist and 1×length (if that makes sense)?
edit: also, i know the waistband's length is waist length + two inches, but do we add that two inches to the skirt waist length too?
me not using a sheet but fresh fabric having to do more work because why not🙃
I wish I had three Hands!
❤❤❤
"we're gonna make a pledge, grab anything near you"
*Me:holds a rubber hair tie*
P.s, this tutorial isn't too confusing like the other's i've watched. I have a project that's due on Wednesday next week... Fyi it's Sunday night.... So yea anyways the project is a skirt, but it can transform in to pants with the power of buttons in the middle.
SECRET PANTS!! Love those and good luck!
Thank you TvT you gave me determination
I thing my right hand broke a land speed record subscribing to this.
🤣
The last skirt I made didn't have a closure. I just pull it over my head like a sweater. Doubt if it would work for everyone but can probably make the gap smaller that way. I noticed I didn't use the buttons anyway, so I don't bother.
what were the dimensions for the waistband? idk if i missed that part or if it wasn’t included 😅
Sorry if you’ve already said this somewhere in the video, but what do you call this kind of closure, with the little tab and button?
gotta love a free button
My only question is how do I know how much length of fabric to add for pleats?
I'm not sure if I'm dumb or what but I am having an insanely hard time following how to start sewing the waistband to the skirt itself :(
I always sew with at least one cat. Sometimes two. Also, I tried to make a top out of a thrifted bedsheet, but it was a very high end sheet and I couldn’t get the needle through! Was it due to a high thread count? Don’t know.
I feel like I always struggle with getting needles through high thread count sheets. My machine needle feels like it has to punch through and only the tiniest hand sewing needles will work. I guess cheap sheets are just easier to work with 🤷
...is it possible to add a pocket where that opening was??
I definitely think you could! You'd need to work through how to keep it as an opening, but a pocket there would be really useful.
Do you need to add length to compensate for the pleating?
If so how much?
Not to the waist-to- bottom length, but I measure each panel double my waist measurement. So my front panel and back panel are both 70" wide by whatever length I want. Then I pleat each panel down to my actual waist measurement (35"). I hope that makes sense.
Yes that makes sense!! Thank you for replying so quickly and adding your own measurements it really helps to understand the explanation:)
Can we be BFF? I feel like I can finally start to sew my first thing now 🥹
God loves you so! John 3:16✝️
I am very sorry to say this but this was sooo confusing to follow
Thank you for your feedback, and I'm sorry it was confusing. If you are able to tell me where it started to get confusing, I can try to make a clearer video that may help you and others!
Why? Why? Why? Why hand sew? It is 2022 for Pete’s sake!
I'm preparing for the apocalypse when sewing machines become sentient robots and refuse to make our clothes anymore. And sometimes it's nice to lay on the couch and be able to make something.
@@KatieMakesStuff 😹😹😹😹😹love it!!! Hahaha
Sewing machines are expensive, both to purchase and maintain. Not everyone has one. Needles are a few dollars, a lot more accessible. Yes, it's slower but it's a very valid way of making clothes. People made all their clothes that way for thousands of years, and couture garments are still made with a lot of hand sewing.
