I used to do hits like this in my early playing days. Going out to block a shot from the point and missing the block but continuing through the player. Most of the times I should have been given a penalty for roughing or interference but they never called it. I was 12-15 and short for my age. House leagues
I mean, there's a guy known for dirty stuff his whole career that recently yanked an opposing player's teeth out with a violent stick to the mouth and only got a 6 game suspension. I don't see how this would be more than a fine or not even that, just a talk on "do's and don't's" in Hockey and that's it. It wasn't violent, wasn't close to injuring the guy, just an interference call and that's it.
Agree its a penalty, but Byram barely gives him a shoulder. The only reason this got more attention is because Crookshanks isn't watching where hes going and goes down so easily. You cant just admire your pass for 5s and ignore who youre about to run into...
I guess where I differ from everyone else is I feel he doesn’t just barely give a shoulder and let Crookshank run into him, like he should. To me he does drive into this hit excessively.
@@mitchhak2 Its a bad move no doubt but it seems more like a frustration move than a predatory one and thats why he was fined, but the case still stands that its barely a hit, he doesnt put a lot into it and when its such a light hit it's not going to be suspended.
Indeed a tough call. If you go by the rulebook, you can argue for a suspension. If you just look at what he does, even a fine feels like a joke. And if it's a tight playoff game, I'm not so sure that it even gets called for a 2 minute interference penalty.
@@ToughCall When have you ever seen anyone actually getting suspended for a hit like this? I mean yeah, it's late and from behind, but at the same time it's open ice and not even that hard. Sure, it would be nice in principle for the league to enforce its rules, but in practice we all know that they're never going to give a suspension for that.
I see a guy driving his shoulder into his opponent’s chin area over a second after the puck had left his stick and who was turned away. Imagine being Byram in that situation. Are you justified in hitting that player?
disagree. bryam just trying to get in the lane of the shot, crookshank is just skating without looking byram probably expected a collision with him there and was just more prepared. . byram trying to hold his position in the center. this play is more on crookshank for not being aware... you cant just give up the center of the ice to skaters not paying attention
I don’t want him to give up the ice at all. I said if he had just stayed in the lane and let Crookshank run into him, no problem. But he drives into this hit. You can’t do that.
@@ToughCall How is Byram going to know he isnt about to be cruised into, he would probably assume that Crookshank sees him and instead of being ran over himself he pushes back on the contact and when Crookshank doesnt end up seeing it at all it looks way worse than it is becaues Byram is barely leaning into that, im sure the result would be almost as bad if Crookshank just skated into him.
@@TheDannydoe Byram turns to his left as Crookshank is approaching. If he kept on that path he would have absorbed any contact with no problem. The only reason to lean into contact with the force he did is to inflict a hit, which is way past its legality by that time.
He drove into contact an hour and a half after his opponent was eligible. For what was legal, this was needlessly excessive. Doesn’t mean I think it was the most violent thing that’s ever happened.
@@ToughCall so what would you call a hit that exceeds this in violence and malice? What’s your next level description? Attempted murder? The hit was bad. So call it bad. You made it sound like he should be indicted
@@overratedbacon4409 No I didn’t make it sound like that. You just interpret it like that.. A hit that’s more violent than this would be judged the same way. Was it made more violent than it was legally allowed to be or not? There are some very legal hits that are also very violent, which is awesome! As long as the hitter doesn’t do things to needlessly increase the violence it’s all we can ask.
@@ToughCall so every illegal hit is viewed by you as needlessly excessive violence regardless of severity. Pretty broad brush you’re painting with there but I appreciate you plainly stating your criteria and how you apply it. We can chat again after Byram’s trial
I’ve been thinking about this off and on so I feel I need to clarify. You have to understand needlessly excessive violence isn’t a set level of violence to be compared to. It doesn’t translate to “a lot of violence”. It translates to legality. This was a late hit. Any amount of violence other than holding his ground and colliding would be needlessly excessive. So when he leans into it and drives his shoulder through, yes, that’s excessive. This same hit on a puck carrier in full possession? Perfect. Exact same hit. Exact same level of violence, but not needless or excessive.
@@ToughCall Byram doesn’t change direction or go out of his way to hit him. He maintains the same pace and direction. Crookshank skates into Byram with his head down, Byram braces for contact, doesn’t drive through or do anything but lift his shoulder. If Crookshank looks where he’s going, none of this happens.
I'd be mad too if I was traded from the Avs to Buffalo.
Excellent breakdown 👍
Glad you liked it!

Agree with this. Gives hockey a bad rep when players start blindsiding opponents late. Need more of your system implemented to clean up the league.

if you look at what he does it’s still a suspension. He steps into a hit well after it’s legal to do it, and its blindside.
