this was the last thing my family heard from the storm shelter right beside the tv, then our power shut out and the pressure of the tornado was felt, and we heard glass shatter and everything. we were praying so much and we are so grateful we are alive. our truck is destroyed and we will have to move in an airbnb for a few months until they fix our backyard and roof but we are so grateful to be alive. thank you matt lauhban for everything you do for us in this area.
UPDATES: me and my sister are staying at our great aunt’s house while our parents stay home and sort everything out. there are no airbnbs left and so we will be in a camper out on our property for a little while until the damage is fixed. a lot of the upstairs will be replaced, my father is a veteran and so we thankfully have great people backing us up, shouldn’t take all too long to get back on our feet.

@@bradm7585 I hear you man. My grandmother survived genocide in Yugoslavia, lived a life of selflessness, went to church every week and had more faith than I ever have and she died in a house fire when she was 92, just hours after my mother-in-law died peacefully in her sleep. That was a real crap pile of a day. Life really sucks sometimes and unfortunately no one is immune to tragedy. I have no answers. I’ve been seeking answers myself. I’ve had other things happen too, even worse than that, that I’m still seeking answers for. I too wish all prayers were answered. I too have struggled with my faith. I just wanted to point out in this instance a man prayed on tv and no one died. Coincidence? I don’t know. Maybe. But I’m very happy no one died in that town. I’m also happy you and your family survived. I’m terribly sorry for the loss of your friends and everything else that tornado did to Joplin. I pray God reveals himself to both of us and strengthens our faith again, soon! Never close the door for good. That’s my wish for you. I hope to see you in heaven some day.

@@derrickrr5516the... well, personal answer i came to is
Praying is fine, it can strenghten your spirit, steel your will. But personally i wont expect things to happen just because i prayed for it, better to go and do something about the situation.
And despite all that, shitty things can happen to you anyway. It's just how life is. Compared to... well, the great force of a tsunami or an earthquake, we humans are painfully small.
All in all, i just dont think much about these things. Just live life to the fullest as much as you can. Thats really about the only thing anyone CAN do.

This is my meteorologist in Mississippi and we absolutely love him. He is a good man and he goes above and beyond his job as a weather forecaster and I wouldn't trade him for anyone else in the world. He had been telling us for 2 days there would be tornadoes and there would be 1 or 2 massive devastating ones that would be life threatening and he said exactly where those would be and 1 of those bad ones would come right through where I live and he was 100% correct. Matt even gets on his own Facebook when he's off and continues to be here for us through all of it. I've seen him be the only one still reporting after all the rest have taken cover at the tv station. Matt deserves any & every award that pertains to being a Chief Meteorologist because he cares about his family and all his viewers. We are BLESSED to have him.

In the face of a disaster like this and feeling so powerless to stop it, it doesn’t matter what religion you are or if you’re religious at all, that sort of prayer transcends religion and culture and goes right to your heart. It’s the most sincere form of prayer and the most important. May this gentleman be blessed many times over for the composure and caring he showed in the face of disaster.
EDIT: some of y'all in the replies need to learn to behave yourselves. I'm not even slightly religious myself but I can still damn sure appreciate the compassion of prayer shown in the face of uncontrollable disaster. this isn't about christians vs atheists or any other religion, it's about human empathy.

He knew exactly what he was looking at and what that meant for those people. It's very surreal when it happens in your own backyard. I'm glad they had a compassionate person to talk them through this. It may sound silly, but most of us develop a love for our meteorologists. Growing up, Dan "The Man" Satterfield (ifkyk) was ours. Many tornadic afternoons, you would hear him screaming from the tvs to warn us latch-key kids of what was coming & how to handle it. Step 1: Turn up the tv as loud as you can. Step 2: Get a helmet or pillows to cover your head. Step 3: Get in a closet or bathtub. Step 4: Do NOT come out until Dan tells you to. ❤

It may be frightening, but a personal god is, ultimately, better than a god that's incapable of caring at all.
Now the question is, why would a caring god allow or cause evil things to happen? The problem is this relies on a human understanding of evil, & as such it puts god on the same level as humans. But god, in whatever form it exists, is above humanity, just as humanity is above its own creations.

I may be agnostic, but this was just heart warming. Someone who genuinely cares about public safety. And as someone who lives in Missouri, I also take tornadoes very seriously. And it is always scary when the news reporters are also scared. Also, props to this guy for remaining as calm and collected as they did. I'd probably be losing my marbles and panicking, trying to let me love ones know.
I've also seen the movie "2012" multiple times, and in that movie, it is stated that being human means to care and look out for each other. And from what is seen here, this reporter fits into that category.

Agreed. So many hateful people are laughing and saying this is what red states deserve and wishing them all death. It's disgusting.
