- A message that is repeated over and over at Creekside Nursery is that fall is the best time to plant trees, shrubs, and most perennials in your garden. Last November we planted our privacy berm, and the plants prove that this is why we plant in the fall! Come with us as we walk through the garden and tour these very happy plants.

I’m so excited for fall! 🍁🍂 I couldn’t care less about spooky season but planting season… I can get behind that!
Same!!
I'm planting my kitchen garden for autumn today ☺️. Starting tomorrow we're going to have a week of rain and cooler weather so the timing is going to be good.
@taylorswf23 I couldn't agree more! I'm 100x more excited about planting season than about anything spooky. 🌱🌾
Jenny and Jerry your hard work paid off, the Berm is beautiful. I couldn’t stop watching all of the butterflies flitting around in the background, stunning ❤🦋
She is just real. So relatable. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
I love how your absolute enthusiasm and excitement for beautiful plants and future plans comes through in this video. Makes me feel like I'm not the only one.
Thank you so much! And you’re not 😉
Jenny, you are a rock star on camera. I love being a part of this channel and "rooting" for Creekside!!
Thank you so much❣️
The shrubs, bushes, flowers, and trees are looking amazing in the new beds! Thanks for your vision of these wonderful beds. 😊
Jenny, your house and yard are just beautiful! Blessings to you and your family!
Can't wait for more cooler temps here in Louisiana. Sheesh it's been super hot here zone 9b..
A big thank you. I see people saying spring is best planting time--- WRONG! We had a huge early drought heat event this year. Best way to avoid that problem is to give roots an early chance to start growing , which they love to do in the coolness and dampness which comes in fall. Scientists explain that the plant can now allocate more energy to roots in the fall because growth goes dormant above ground, while growth can go into hyperdrive in the fall underground, but it is invisible to us . This gives the plant a headstart!!!🙂🙂💚💯
Jenny, you give me hope after being so emotionally wrecked with the desiccation of my garden and our deck and its gabled roof collapsing in this horrific heat wave in the DFW area. It has been hard watching beautiful gardens on YT when I've about given up on everything and the expense of trying to keep it up and at the same time, rebuild our backyard deck. Praying God gives me strength to get back out there and plant this Fall as I want my beautiful hydrangeas and other plants back. I've also been wanting to plant North Pole Arborvitaes or another evergreen along our back fence that I look out and see all winter. I pray they do well here in our area. I'm desperate for evergreens! Thank you for sharing and encouraging and inspiring. Many of us need it right now -- along with some drenching rains. God Bless you and your sweet family!
I, too, reached the “ready to give up” state this summer, though my situation is really different from yours. I had an operation, a small one, in early July, but I had to avoid exertion and even bending over for several weeks. That was just the time of our big heat wave here. So much died and I felt like throwing in the towel, but with the passage of several weeks I am feeling a little bit optimistic, and I hope that your bruised gardening instinct will recover as well.
Challenges will provide new opportunities 🙏 I planted some north poles in my yard between my backyard and equipment yard for some separation and am really impressed so far! Apparently they stay more true to green where some arbs will brown a bit in the dead of winter.
@@katiedavis5861 This is encouraging to hear. What zone are you in? Praying the ones we plant do as well too.
@@victoriaaustin2468 just keep them watered well! We garden in 7a.
My issue with planting in the fall is the fact that most nurseries do not have enough stock. It’s almost like Halloween is around the corner, and Christmas right behind!!! Just found some dwarf crape Myrtle bushes at Lowe’s because they are blooming now, and, of course, mums. But, it’s way too early for mums. I would prefer to see what I am going to buy first hand, but ordering on line looks more and more like the way to go, if you want something specific. Also found some allium which I am planting in some of the spaces where I had lilies. Can’t deal with the deer any more.
Oh my those swallowtails on the butterfly bush 😍
Right?! 💛
I'm so sad. The deer took out my two hydrangeas, 1 of my Dolce Wildberry Herchera and a coleos that had grown huge. I'm not a fan of deer right now. I wish my flower bed looked as good as your, Jenny.
I hear you, I covered my hydrangeas with bird netting after I saw the buds eaten off my Little Quickfires! This seemed to work until the netting tore the new flowers as I removed it each morning. So I had to quit doing it, so far all is well, so 🤞! 🦌🤨🇨🇦
Beautiful job planning out the berm, it is gorgeous. 👍
I am redoing the garden here in North Dallas, TX - totally suffering @ 109 degrees for 80 days plus no rain. I need to rethink what I’m gonna do going forward. I am encouraged by watching your family gardening channel just cannot do what you are doing here but it give me hope in the meantime. 😊
Great video! You have one of the most beautiful gardens I’ve seen on CZcams.
Wow, thank you!
Love your sweet outfit Jenny, great tour, you always give such great info..
Thank you so much!
Jenny - when planting in the summer, Jim Putnam of HortTube, recommends cutting the shrubs back a little - maybe try that with your Puffer Fish Hydrangeas near the chicken coop - especially any new growth (tip prune).
ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS! I am adding some of those “bones” to my backyard renovating garden! I LOVE it! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🏆
I’m in East Tennessee and we thought we lost a bunch of shrubs and plants during the arctic blast… we were just going to pull them but we started seeing some growth! So we left them alone and sure enough they survived 🫶
Ours too here in GA zone 8
Azaleas, lorapetulums !
Me too. I'm in Knoxville, and I thought everything was gone because of that artic blast. Thank goodness for Jennys video regarding the Arctic blast, and she said to leave everything alone, so that's what I did. I did lose all my pugster butterfly bushes. But everything else came back❤
Same here in Mid Tn. Azalea's, hydrangeas, butterfly Bush. defoliated no blooms but everything came back out green.
@@caroleking1834 same for me- no hydrangea blooms but the plant looks nice and healthy
@@loribethartist6353 I was so glad to see some green coming out. They all looked like dead sticks.
Hi Jenny. Wow it’s hard to believe how fast your Burm planting got established. Looks absolutely beautiful. ❤
I love your videos! Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for educating us! You guys are great. You and Jerry work so hard. Jenny you look so pretty 💕💐
Boy, is this video timely for me! We had some serious crop failure on shrubs we installed in June at our low country home here in SC. I think you have nailed down the major reason why we lost azaleas and other supposedly easy shrubs. Too darn hot!! The one choice we made that has embraced the heat of the summer is our abelia. What a beast that one is! But the rest are going or gone, even lorepedulum. Yuck! We will wait month or two before we start replacing. Thank you, Jenny!
Great information! Making notes as I watch… plants to move, plants to buy & add! Come on, Fall! 🍁 (Kansas 6a)
The berm is beautiful, enjoy watching your garden grow.❤ Also I have to have those dwarf butterfly bushes, so beautiful.
So many beautiful things! My deer would absolutely feast on those hydrangeas! I'm limited to things they don't like, it's a bummer😢
That bed looks amazing, nice job y’all! 👍👍
Thanks so much!
I’ll enjoy your hydrangeas as much as the deer seem to enjoy mine 😂 you have worked so hard, and it’s really paying off!!
I am getting rid of many of the plants that get destroyed by deer, hosta and lilies first. But, I am going to keep the hydrangea. I am going to cover every last one of them with netting. Not fair to the plant to let the deer just decimate them. So, if I am going to keep them, they deserve some help. I am going to get the stakes in the ground over the winter so I am ready come spring.
Always inspirational!
Here in Houston, my gardens are struggling. We need a serious break from the oppressive heat and drought. So nice to see some beautiful successes in y’all’s berm garden.
Thanks for sending me the name of the company where you got sun hat. I appreciate your help.
For years i have found fall to be the best planting time. Your fabulous berm certainly proves the case.
I, too, am starting to remove some spring planted annuals that are looking rather tired now. Most are Proven Winners from Creek Side. Thanks to you, Jerry, your family and staff for all you do to provide the best plants...and videos. Will see you after the temps drop. Think i need a day trip! Susan from Kernersville 🍂🍁🌾
Jenny what do you use to treat your trees for Japanese beetles?!
Those butterflies are really loving that plant 🎉
The berm is beautiful. A year into it, we all have been along for the ride and feel so pleased that it turned out so well.
Your border is really beautiful, I love your plant choices.
Thank you so much!
Thank you Jenny and Jerry .🌺💚🙃
enjoyed video, and such a beautiful garden. i have some planting to do now so, i will wait until the end of september or october to plant them. i live in ga, so yes it's really, really, hot. be safe and enjoy the rest of your day.!!!
Great video. I have learned so much from your channel.
Thank you.😊
You are so welcome!
Morning Jenny n Jerry the bern sure has flourished
Thanks for so much info !🥰
Your berm looks great! Wish I could plant but our area is in a drought, Vancouver island, BC Canada, Pacific Northwest. No watering! Hoping for rain soon!
absolutely gorgeous
I had a few struggling plants this year. I dug them up and put them in pots. This change made them much happier and I'll be able to put them back in the ground this fall.
Before I watch the your video let me say I love your garden.
Thank you so much!
This whole burm looks amazing Jenny. You guys have hit it out if the park on this
I love what you have done here.
Very informative. I recently purchased several shrubs and perennial for Fall planting from our local University's(UD) , Botanical Society.
Yuhu omg fresh and beautiful plant.
Awesome , thanks for sharing
Look at all of the pollinators moving around!
Hi Jenny! I'm excited for fall planting. This video was great. My eye kept going to the beautiful texture of the string theory Amsonia. My goodness that gold craft smokebush is gorgeous! Question do you deal with deer on your property, and do they bother your northpole arborvitae? Thank you!!
Thank you for your kind words! We do have deer on our property, but they do not bother our plants. I attribute it to the fact that we have so much native, undisturbed land around us. The deer have plenty of other yummy things to eat other than our plants.
Oh sweet I watch both you and Jenny. I watch Laura too. Love all 3 of yall channels.
Fall in south asia is approach. Soft stem plants are withering. Its time to plant autumn selection😊
Great information. Thank you.
Gosh Jenny I watched when you two began the berm project and JUST LOOK at it now!! It is BEAUTIFUL! I will be planting some boxwoods sometime soon to establish them before the cold comes in Seacoast NH. I am not a native here though I’ve been here long enough to consider it my home. Originally I’m from lower Michigan and all the wonderful growers and landscapers were not on the radar when I left for Minnesota at 16 years old. I wish they had been, people like Jack, etc.. What a wonderful experience that would have been! 😊
❤ the Thunderhead Japanese Black Pine
Hi Jenny🌺 . What abeautiful plants in your garden they are amazing for fall . I lovet . Have awonderful day. 🌺🌻🌺
Hi Jenny! Wow! A hedge of coleus !! I love it. The timing of this video was perfect cuz I'm itching to do perennial transplanting in my gardens and I need to wait for fall. 😢 I'm in zone 7A. Always love the information you and Jerry provide. Thank you for doing what you do!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Jenny and Jerry, everything looks so amazing and the butterflies have no idea what "video rock stars" they are in the garden!! I would buy all the pink Cascade Butterfly bushes you have for such a lovely display!! All your hard work is very appreciated! Thank you
Thank you for the information and advice. I have 5 Hydrangeas that I can’t plant due to large tree trimming so I’m excited to hear about being able to plant my Hydrangeas in the fall. I was thinking I might need to wait until the spring.😊
I haven’t watched you in awhile,Jenny! I forgot how much I enjoy your videos!
I won’t forget again! Question…how do you treat Japanese Beetles? I get them on my roses and they chew them up! I’ve just been picking them off by hand but they come back with 5 other friends! I put them in water and dish soap. Drowns them! Thanks for this video!🤗🌸🌺🌸💐🐞🌻🪲
I’m so happy your reminding us to fall plant, this has been a horrible summer here in North Texas. I lost so many plants and I know I planted them in the fall but with 110 + degrees days for months nothing can live. I’m so heart broken. Maybe their not dead so I’ll keep watering them some.
for planting in the heat of summer, yes definitely not ideal but if you have to, I suggest of course regular watering but also SHADE CLOTH at least for a few days until you can see it's through the transplant shock and the worst of the heat has passed.
I glad you mentioned the caveat of depending which zone you are in. We are in Calgary AB Canada zone3 or 4 some years. So no max we can grow is September, I wouldn’t recommend waiting till September because snowfall in October.
I’m in Alabama, zone 8a. I’ll be planting a border bed between my house & my neighbor’s house. I love this bed! I’m considering drawing out this exact bed to use for placement & shopping. It will take me a long minute to figure out what all the plants are & where to place them. Would you happen to have a plan drawn out that you’d be willing to share? I’m thinking because you’re so experienced that you wing it, but thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask. 🙏😁
Everytime you say, "Happy roots..." I say, "Happy shoots!"😅
I love planting in the fall and winter. I've been wanting one of those smokebushes but looking at yours, it would be too big for the spot where I want to put it.
Your garden is stunning!
Thank you❣️
Your tree drench worked like a charm for our Thundercloud. So glad we found that
That’s great to hear!!!
I enjoy your videos because of the information you share. I am in Zone 7a and new to gardening. Can yall do a drip system video? Not so much on how to put it in but how often you run it, what size tubing you use, and the spacing of the emitters. This would help greatly thanks again.
Jenny I love.
Hearing and loving what you have to say.
Thanks for giving me good advice cause. I've learning something new right now.
That. I should be planning? In the fall. And not In the Spring with my prenials.
Annual yes in the Spring.
Joann from circle bill Ohio.
Jenny, do you ever give tours of your private gardens?
I love your channel! I have gotten so much inspiration this year for my personal landscaping project I'm working on.
Gorgeous 🥰
Thanks for the videos. I am learning so much!
Just beginning to landscape our property.
Is it ok to plant hydrangea on a slope?
Yes, absolutely! We have multiple sloped beds with hydrangeas in them.
LOVE your top/shirt/blouse and shirt - you look amazing!
Thank you so much!! My motto for summer is the 3Cs - Cute, Cool, & Comfy🤣
Beautiful garden bed and love the tour! At the 3:12 mark, what are those grasses around the pine? TIA!
Aapka garden view khoob surat hai frnd
I had the same problem with my pufferfish!! 1/3 survived and I was on top of watering and everything..they just couldn't take the summer !
Good Morning! I too would be interested in what you use for Japanese Beetle control. It was a disastrous year for my plants here in Delaware. I only use ORMI approved pesticides. Been out with the milky spore this month, but my poor, poor roses. (Blueberries, plums, pole beans, strawberries, raspberries, Rose of Sharon, etc, etc, etc) But it WOULD be nice to enjoy the roses for more than 20 minutes.
This video is perfect timing for me as a Beginner gardener. My first year to ever plant anything in my yard. I'm going to have Fun this fall!!!!❤ 🪴🌳🌻💐🏡
Your landscape looks uh. Maze. Ing! But totally off topic, your shirt, blouse, top, is adorable!
I’m in northeast it’s 65 degrees in August no summer temperatures here . I need a bush not sure what to plant.😊🌺
You mentioned the Japanese beetles eating your plum tree. You also said- you “didn’t” treat it. What do you do to treat your plants/trees the beetles love? I have gone to war with them in my garden but I can never seem to get them off of certain plants.
Very informative. I love your gardens. I have a question. I have overgrown shrubs/bushes. When should I trim them back? I’m in Savannah GA. Thanks
Thank you for the video. Could you please tell me what the spiky grasses are called?
Looks so good. Obviously no deer there! That would be decimated where I live.
I like your work 👍
Thank you so much 😀
Hi Jenny!
I have learned so much from your videos. Thanks for your expertise and so much awesome gardening info!!
Question, several years ago I planted a viburnum, I don't know the name but, it had a layered growth habit and awesome deep maroon foliage in the late Summer/early Fall. It was removed during a construction project. I would love to have this beautiful shrub back in my garden. Any idea on what species it may have been?
Thanks to you and Jerry and ýour awesome channel ❤
Beautiful tour. But you skipped the gorgeous red shrubs by the Plum tree! What are those? I always plant in the Fall if I can also because stuff goes on sale at Garden centres 😂
Those are Orange Pillar barberries 🧡
Greensboro here. Question? I transplanted roses in June from a house being torn down. They are now starting to bloom but should i cut the blooms so they put energy into roots and leaves? Btw you hair looks good the color make you eye color looks more saturated.
I loved your tour yesterday. Just watched it today.
I have in Central PA ZONE 6. Suggest shrubs and trees to plant now because our winters are different than yours. Even my hydrangea has morning sun but in June, the summer positioning of the sun causes it to have sun in afternoon. Only 1 yes I said 1 bloom last two years. HELP, PLEASE. Thanks
I love the new bed that you created last fall. It looks so healthy. Do you have irrigation in that bed? My plants are looking sad and I even have irrigation.
Jenny, my hydrangea leaves have ugly spots...I feel it is a fungus. What do I add to the soil next Spring? Zone 8a
I've visited your nursery once and plan to come back. Love following the progress of your property.
Mums are a fall flowering plant/shrub. How would you suggest showing them off? Could you do a video on mums? They do quite well in Dallas, Texas, in the spring and fall. But since watching your show, I don't know if I should place them in a triangle ( only bought 3), or if I should place straight in a row. I appreciate your opinion. Love watching your videos 😊 they bring so much knowledge to me, but I only have small garden.
❤ good morning
I enjoyed watching your video and especially liked your honeysuckle vine, coleus,North Pole & pufferfish shrub. I wonder how long you have been working on designing your garden? Really is beautiful! Thank you for your motivational video. If we were closer in distance, I would visit your Garden Center but soon we will be in Indiana 6b & just becoming familiar with all that will grow in this zone. Thanks again & happy gardening!
So glad you enjoyed the video! This bed is less than 1 year old; we began constructing the bed last October.
Great information as always Jenny. You mentioned that you water the berm plants once a week. How long do you do it for? Many thanks.
About 45 minutes
Does the Thunderhead Japanese black pine need all sun? Could it be planted between a large shade tree (not sure what it is) and huge Pine trees that are on opposites of a very long garden bed?
I needed this video. I'm in Texas, Been waiting on planting 2 of my hydrangeas. It's soo dang hot right now. What about trees? I have a Texas redbud?
this one was hard to hear. Love the berm! All the beautiful butterflies!
Love you berm. Gorgeous!! Also love your split rail fence. Did you paint it black or is that a dark green grayish color ? I stained mine to prevent the graying of the cedar but now in love with Yours !!
This is a solid stain from Sherwin Williams, Black Alder
I am in a 6b zone in Ontario, Canada. Would you recommend planting Rose of Sharon and hydrangeas in September or October? Thank you for all your great advice.
For your area I would plant them earlier rather than later so that the roots can begin growing before hard winter hits.
