if Dust has taught me anything, it's that coming up with an intriguing scenario is a lot easier then developing a coherent plot with an ending
Watch enough of these and that is the exact conclusion you will come to. Atleast it's a conclusion, though ;)
@Dan - Good point.
Well said!!!! 100% spot on!
Yep. I have about twenty stories in my files that I've never published because I couldn't think of worthwhile endings for them. But I guess they'd make the cut at DUST!
Yes, most of these stories have no conclusion. I wonder why they go to so much trouble and cost to produce something so annoying and pointless?
The alternative story: One long ad for ramen soup noodles during a lockdown.
*with deep licking
Oodles of noodles
I beg your pardon...there was also Cup-O-Soup.
@BlueJayRobin Give us this day our garlic bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trample on our lawns. And lead us not into vegetarianism, but deliver us some pizza, for thine is the meatball, the onion, and the bay leaves, forever and ever. May the flying spaghetti monster touch thy third eye with his noodly appendage R'Amen.
@BlueJayRobin R'amen
My interpretation: He went to the place he wanted to be and did so with focus and direction , the other guy had no focus, direction and his subconscious kept sending him to prison suggesting guilt and where he deserved to be.
Although guilty of the murder was not guilty of bad intent, he killed a bad guy. The alien tech acted as a judge of character and didn't care about skin colour or our judiciary system...the two of them ended up where the laws of the universe decided.
That was insightful!
Thank you
I really appreciate that insight. It is so clear now
Love this - thanks dolltron!
Finally, one that makes sense.
I was locked up for two years. This situation was my greatest fear. That something would happen and nobody would help us. Its a terrible fear to have. Glad to say i made it home to my babies.
That seems to be a big problem today. no way out while the "so called "corona C virus is supposedly "being contained" within the prison don't ever wanna go back there again !!!
And then real fear starts...
@@dougholliday467 Kinda the opposite, in some states, when it first started, began releasing prisoners over fears of the virus, which is as bad of an idea as it sounds. And then they start arresting people who break lockdown measures and put them in prison.
Am glad you made it help, now help those inside to not live in fear
Here, in Indonesia when the covid is start outbreaking, the first week we don't get full daily meal, it's only 2 noodle per people for a day. Note that Indonesian appetite is much bigger so 2 noodle daily with no rice really make some people angry.
Glad tho in June my sentence is over.
At the end there it looks like life is just going on as normal outside the prison, so why did they stop feeding the prisoners and turn off the power and water?
Yeah, I didn't understand that either. When his call to his mother went to voicemail, I thought the world had gone to shit - which would explain the lack of power and water - but once outside, everything looked normal sans a huge footstool in the skies. I liked the story, but there's a few unexplained things.
@@ojkolsrud1 yeeeeep. i think the whole story was just a poorly created medium to carry a political message of some kind. with plotholes as huge as the ones in this story, it's obvious the writing was focused more around the message than the story
so here is my theory, that where the guy jumped to isn't really LA, its what he remembers LA looking like.
@@ChrisBrown-od3eb That's actually a pretty clever theory!
@@flappy7373 Spot on. They were trying to hit more than one at a time which ends up a mess as nothing is truly the focus and nothing is developed. Nothing is resolved, nothing is accomplished, but viewers who really enjoy studying film know what is going on. Unfortunately, many of the films on this and other similar channels do the same thing. Promoting the latest politically correct stance with manufactured stereotypes and predictable character traits in order to fit the current narrative, sometimes going so far as just being a vehicle for someone's propaganda without concern for people who just like to watch, talk about, and critique film. Most people just want to consume entertainment - understandable to a certain extent. And then you have the comments of people who want these made into movies and series as if Hollywood, Netflix, etc. wouldn't twist and corrupt them further into cinematic abominations that Cthulhu itself would give multiple tentacles up for. I appreciated your comment. Many comments that one sees here just praise every video and make excuses for any shortcomings without any consideration of the social context or occasion. Criticism is not condemnation like so many fragile egos seem to think or, as you often hear in the vernacular, as "I feel like."

I appreciate that DUST is promoting art. We don't often see that in movies. A painting doesn't have to tell a whole story; it can just set a mood, and invite a viewer to ask questions. I think it's helpful to watch these movies as if they were paintings. They set up some elements and introduce a few ideas. They are not just short, Hollywood movies with a beginning, middle, and end, standard character development arcs, and happy resolution at the end to ensure mass popularity that justifies some multi-million-dollar production budget. These shorter films can take many more chances. They can show us things that Hollywood will never show us. They can let us ask questions. Another commenter said this movie isn't "scifi," just because it has aliens and a magic teleporter. I agree. I think it's sci-fi because it uses the lens of another reality to give us another perspective on our own.

Yes, way too many unanswered questions. When a person has to guess most of the film, the mystery element becomes a hindrance. The movie also doesn't make a lot of sense. It's an image of fear based in racism. The longest scene is when he's robbing the white man and he's cowering in fear. Then the film ends. It's racist propaganda and that's why it didn't make sense. All the movie shows is a black man in prison for murder and he finds a way to escape. Typical depiction of a black man.

Why does he keep switching the TV off?!?! Call me old fashioned, but if I was locked up and had access to news on a UFO parked over the city...it would be on all day!

Is that a Borg starter cube or is IKEA making space ships? That's some cell he has. TV, cell phone , mr. coffee

you forgot the noodles m8....
it's like that for prisoners in Norway..except the digs are even nicer..and from what i understand, except in the rarest of cases, no one serves more than 20 years there..the guy who shot up those kids at the camp-school place, is the first ones in a long time who might NOT get out after serving the 20...because they realize how dangerous he is and they've been making provisions, having meetings..but to ONLY *consider* keeping him in.🙄🤦🏾♀️
point being, this is sci-fi - which for me anyway, is a form of fantasy...so it's not impossible to suspend disbelief about the chance idea that - in some other parallel Earth timeline or whatever - that *somehow* an 'improvement' in how prisoners are housed took place..but, of course, not everyone will agree. not everyone's imagination will allow them to mind-dream about some of the ways that could happen.

It sounded like he made a confession.
Actually i was thinking that part as a plot twist.. A setup made specially for his confession.
@@arora_for_life so does it takes all this for a guy to confess and commit another crime right away? Nice!
His last phone call to his mother he did confess. In an earlier call his mom said the guy was the worst sort of child predator and needed to die, but she didn't believe he did it.
If he’s gonna confess, do it before people stop visiting. And ESPECIALLY before the alien invasion.
Typical black man. Tryin' to get away with it 'till the very end.
Basically the device helps you to “escape” your reality, it puts you where you’re safe. The mysterious man looked like that, he was running from someone, in danger, and the device found the best solution for him. In a prison cell, alone. He doesn’t need to run anymore. To the other guy was his mom’s house, his family, the safest place that he could ever be.

@@tubularguynine he admited killing the guy to his mother..bro
Extra explanation : The Footstool Flying Object gave everyone free teleport baton, all prison guards use it, they somehow sent to the Pacific and never came back, the fruit man did not use it and hes still there, hes wise.
Ah, the ‘Mercurian Judgement Baton.’ The guy in the prison cell, when he thought he was confessing his crime to his mother because he realised that due to his lack of food he would shortly starve, was actually talking to the ‘inquisitor,’ the ‘great Mercurian inquisitor.’ The gate-crasher on the other-hand, obviously came upon the baton by illicit means which was evident by his unfamiliarity with how the ‘Mercurian Judgement Baton’ works. He will now starve to death in the jail cell he made his own. That is known on Mercuria as ‘passing the baton on.’ The fruit seller will continue to sell his fruit as he always has done, never seeking to harm anybody, so no harm shall come to him.
I have to say, that several aspects of this teleplay reminded me of several ‘Red Dwarf’ episodes.
So many of these DUST/ short sci-fi‘s have incredibly rich potential. Kind of like an M night Shyamalan film. Ultimately they disappoint.

Felt real empathy for Houston and the others seemingly abandoned in their cells. Good job!
@Terrence Bullock what did you say? No really, you didn't make yourself clear
@Terrence Bullock I dunno. It sounds like his crime was an act of justice that just happened to fall outside the law, an example of "what's legal ain't always right and what's right ain't always legal." I mean, he killed a killer whom the law apparently couldn't get. Hardly something he deserves to starve to death for.
Everyone knows you’re suppose to put the ramen seasoning in the bag and break it up before you eat it raw.
Nah! All the bad stuff is in the seasoning...
Genuinely thought he was gonna be the reason his mom stopped calling. Like it was a time machine as well as a teleportation device.
Not bad, though. The main guy did a good job, like when he looked in the mirror to tell his mom he didn't do it like he was practising for the trial. Couple of nice little touches.
Exactly like a time machine, as any device to take you instantly between two points also affects time. He was where he wished to be most. I think it took him to an alternate reality/the past because of the way his mother was talking, it was as if the world was falling apart.
THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE.
Damn that was GOOD!! You know that's a DAMN GOOD actor right there! Because it was just him we were watching basically the entire time, and I stayed right at the edge of my seat!

Ramen passed cigarettes as prison currency years ago. Many facilities are tobacco free so harder to get cigarettes in. Ramen is money and power.
I've never been in prison, but that alarm clock in a cell broke the immersion for me.
Thick cord, hard and brittle plastic, sharp shards of metal inside, poisonous fluids inside (Lead crystal can be poisonous even in small doses), even the plastic display itself can be sharpened enough to cause harm.
Heck, you can break several parts of one of those while leaving it functional and using the pieces to harm others.
Finally, don't most prisons wake up all the inmates at the same time?
Solitary is different then the flags. Different prisons have different procedures. I have only been in one Prison, and 3 jails. Solitary you had 2 hrs outside your cell every day. Outside if weather permits.
IMO he was not in “solitary” as punishment. But protective custody. (Same rooms, different treatment). You can buy stuff if your account has cash in it. A tv, depending on prison rules a coffee pot might be allowed. Candy, snacks, some food might be allowed. Depending on rules. (If his crime was considered a good thing...) If he was not trouble care packages might be allowed.
Plus sad to say guards can be bribed. Cell phones are not unheard of. (But I’m surprised he would take cell phone to parole hearing.).
I think I would have filled water at first hint we are forgotten.

Hey all - thanks for watching. I'm the screenwriter. Hit me with some questions!
patrick davis this is important to address - Houston did not get away with the murder that put him in prison, where the story begins. When you say two murders I assume you’re also talking about Kevin, the guy he leaves behind when he escapes. Even though it’s not resolved in this short, Houston now has the ability to travel anywhere on the planet - once he finds his mother, there’s no doubt in my mind that he’ll return to his cell for a rescue mission.
Why does it seem like the prison has been abandoned even though life is relatively back to normal on the outside? Is it because the prisoners are “expendable?” Not enough people to staff the prison with all the people heading to the ship - and the prisoners are too dangerous to release and considered “expendable?”
Where is his mother? If she’s on the ship, she must have been taken against her will based on what she said about God.
Wish there was a lot more of this video, but what is there is really good - and I greatly appreciate you coming to the comments and answering questions - thanks and congratulations!
Was the guy in the prison able to use the wand due to practicing mediation and having a higher understanding of his intent.
That felt more like a short section from a longer film. Would you ever consider doing a more full movie that shows us more of the story?
Brenda Paduch you got it - much like in the real world, where prisoners are “out of sight out if mind,” once the ship appears and the presence of alien life is confirmed, Houston and his fellow inmates are left behind.
Between self quarantine and slight claustrophobia it was getting hard to watch. Was good. I hope he went back to the prison to release the guy.
