After visiting Guadalahara back in december i also experienced some very friendly localsnas well and the gentlemen there was so helpful at the store this is reason enough to want to live in Mexico.

Don't know where you lived in the US, but where I live, in Tx, I know most of my neighbors and we have regular get togethers and watch each other's property. We're supportive of each other. Please STOP comparing where you lived to all Americans. I'm sorry you never developed relationships with your former US neighbors, but it's possibly something you should reflect on.
How about buses? have you tried the local bus system
We travelled using Aldo from Cancun to Merída.. I plan to check out the local city buses at some point. They are very affordable.
Check out the Van y Ven & also local buses they all go to centro. Yes they're very affordable & an cheap way to go to centro. I recommend a UV Blocking umbrella while you wait @ the bus stop & just walking around
