  • Few days ago, Nepal published a new political map of their country that includes a small stretch of land controlled by India. It is approximately 300 square kilometers of land located between Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani which Nepal believes to be a part of its own country. In this video, I take you through the history of this land, how borders were divided between India and Nepal through the Sugauli Treaty and how this dispute has arisen. I also explain role of China's influence in this geopolitics.
Special thanks to Kanak Mani Dixit & Tika P Dhakal for their research on this issue. They have written a detailed piece in Scroll Website, which I have used as the primary source in this video. Here's the link to their full article, highly recommend to read this for more information -

Nice analysis. The only thing I would like to correct is that it was not after 1860 that we claimed the territory. But we have records till 1960 when Nepal collected Taxes and conducted census in those area. Rest of it is on point.

But if you look at the remittance each country receives, India gets 3 times more money from Nepal than Nepal does from India. In fact, Nepal has long been among the top 10 sources of remittance for India (Just look at official sources of the Indian government). So, the relation is more of interdependence, contrary to what general Indian tends to believe or is made to believe!

This is their policy. first thing they create divide within, then sell their fear and protection insurance and then rule that has been their chronology and then they do not want to leave but they had to for some obvious reasons and when they do they do not let people live in peace that is why we have fought 4 wars with pakistan due the maps and then in africa and even in middle east and far east and even in parts of south america and the islands. There is an urdu proverb " hum toh doobe hain sanam- tumhe bhi le doobenge" i will translate in english for you even though it would be a vague one according to their strategy " we are going out of here but we will never let you live in peace".

11:42 Hello Dhruv, Nepal had its first elections (under monarchy) in 1959 AD. Our government has the voter list from these disputed region so this is not a 100 years old issue. Also the person who conduced the census in 1961 AD (2018 BS) is still alive. We have the tax receipts as well.
Before 1962 this wasn't an issue for both Nepal and India. But after 1962 Sino-Indian war this region got all the attention. We used to have Indian Military check posts in our Northern frontier (even Indian Ambassador used to sit in the cabinet meetings), all of those check posts were removed but one, Kalapani. This is where the issue starts.
So going by your logic, if your grandfather gave his land on a lease to someone else for farming and he built a house and lived there, your father didn't cared about it and now when you claim that land with all the legal papers and instead got a thrashing from the tenant, how does that feel?

Thankyou Dhruv for the factual Information. Let me add some more points.
    - During Indo-China war, India asked Nepal's help to grant some space in Nepal's territory for the establishment of Indian military camps so that it can stop China expansionism. The then King of Nepal gave permission and 17-18 military camp were established. After the war was over and the situation calmed down, the king asked for the withdrawal of those camps because there was no need of one. 17 or so camps were taken back to India. One in the Kalapani region, border near India-China-Nepal was not taken down because it was strategically favorable and important location for India to keep an eye on Chinese soldiers. Being located in quite a remote location, there were not may Nepali presence, so Nepal didn't objected that time because of the good relations and let India protect it's border for some more time.
    - As the time passed by, Indian Military was growing strong, deploying more soldiers in that location. Now, Nepali couldn't get access to that location anymore because of the heavy military presence and made us stay back to the eastern side.. The land was then formally isolated from Nepal because we couldn't get access to it.
    - Why Nepal didn't objected this many years then??
We objected, but our voices were very low because of the bloodiest civil war and various Internal political conflicts. Now, the government is stable and is democratically elected from the people, though it's communist. This is one of the most powerful government that Nepal could ever get. It has 2/3 majority support from the people and cannot deny or neglect people's voice because we've struggled for decades to form such stable government. It should do what people demands else get swiped out in next election.
    - We've only demanded for what is rightfully ours and nothing much. Hope you understand. Hope the diplomatic dialogues from both side resolve this issue as soon as possible.

Nepal until now has only claimed never made the map including the west of large stream of Kalapani but when the Indian government claimed another tributary of west kalapani as the main kalapani river then only the Nepal has claimed its whole part up to Limpiyadhur which is rightfully and legally correct !!!!

I have a big backyard which I never had to use it.
My neighbour started drying their laundry at my backyard - I did not have a problem!
Then, they started vegetable gardening there - I still did not have any problem!
This continued for years and years.
Today, my neighbour not only claimed that MY backyard is their property but also started to build a house there without my consent - Here I have a HUGE problem!
This is exactly what has happened with Kalapani, Limpiyadhura and Lipulekh issue. Nepal stayed quiet for so long doesn’t mean India can claim they are their land now!

I am a Nepali and have been watching you for a year now. I am confident that with this video you will gain a significant amount of Nepali fans too.🙂
I have been following this India-Nepal border issue for a long time and all I can say is the accuracy and honesty with which you have explained the scenario has gained more respect for you.
Things that should have been included are the election of 1959 where the people living in that area have voted in Nepali election and the census of 1961 where Nepal Included people from that area which favours Nepal Historically too.
One thing I don't understand is how Indian media are misunderstanding and misinterpreting this issue. They have not done any research on the geographical and historical point of view and all they are doing is blaming China for interfering. I am totally shocked by the fact that the Indian media have so many resources but also do not focus on research.
I find your research more accurate than most of the media houses of India. Finally, Thankyou for making things clear for all. Love From Nepal ❤️

    2. The population of that region has been considered in determining total population of Nepal.

      1. Look different map issued by British, India itself, maps issued by different organization from 1816 to now. There are more than enough you can find. All the maps show the real KALI river mentioned in treaty and where is Kali river that India is arguing? Analyse them. If you cannot find one, i can give you source. Do experience survey, take idea from Hydrologist, take idea from cartographer, read your own map history first. Don't try to be expert without having the knowledge.
      2. Look Sugauli treaty (1816 Mar 4), it says east to kali river is Nepal.
      3. Analyse the map of Nepal issued by India in 1857
      4. Look agreement from 1860 Nov 1 , where British returned some parts of Nepal which was given to British during Sugauli treaty
      5. Look map of Nepal from 1875 Jan 7, which was created during marking Dubuwa region of Dang.
      6. Look original Tax invoice, which was paid by people of Limpiyadhura to Government of Nepal, search if you also have the same.
      7. People from Limpiyadhura were enlisted in Nepals Voter List in 1958, search if they were included in any Governmental list of India, if any then analyse.
      8. People from Limpiyadhura were enlisted in Census of Nepal in Census year 1961.
      9. Ask the historian, when for the first time Indian Army created camp in Kalapani Area. Simple logic, if Kalapani was territory of india, there should be administration of India before 1962. The same applies for Nepal also however we have evidence that people there used to pay tax to Nepal. Infact, King Mahendra from Nepal showed a great heart for India and permitted Indian Army to do business in Kalapani(Nepals region) giving them advantages during Sino-Indian War in 1962. Since then, they are camping there. Nepal has been asking them to leave in different time however India is capturing the land illegally.
      10. When China and India did agreement in 2015, Nepal objected to India-China trade pact via Lipulekh pass. Government of Nepal sent diplomatic note to both the government of India and China against the trade pact which includes Nepals Land. Government of China reacted the diplomatic note and said they would review it on contrary, Government of India showed no respect.
      11. Government of India has been accepting there is some boarder issue in Kalapani however they included the parts in their map issued in late 2019. As far as I know, they must have discussed to GON before issuing their boarder map. Consequently. Government of Nepal has no option but to issue its map consisting its own territory.
      12. It is not that Nepal started protesting only after the road has been completed but Nepal has been warning India to construct boarder road to Kailash Mansarovar in Kalapani region but surprisingly, Defence minister of India inaugurated the link road to Kailash Mansarovar.
      13. Government of Nepal has sent diplomatic note and has been sending to seat in table and talk for this issue my friend.
There are much more evidences with Nepal which can be shown in the table talks. I request you to collect the same before claiming the land. I believe India is truly democratic country and we can resolve it peacefully in table. I also believe this will make no differences between everlasting relations of ours.
