KC 50 #30 : Epitaph (Greg Lake Vocal) (Commentary) 00:00:00 (track) 00:02:43 - Hudba
Greg Lake’s voice is so angelic it brings tears to my eyes listening to this. Definitely one of the greatest voices ever.
it is superb, esp for 1969.

Indeed
My father loves this song. He is dying right now. I wish I could take it away or do something....
I will always love you and revisit your stories! You are a legend, Dad! I love you!

The most underrated and beautiful voices in music. Greg Lake was an epic musician as well. His musical talent should never be forgotten. Rest In Peace. I cry every time I hear him sing. He was just that powerful.
What a great loss is not having Greg Lake, his voice will resonate for eternity and songs like Epitaph are made to that purpose.
Absolutely agreed!
The guy's voice is tender and tough at the same time. His intonation is beautiful, and the power of his breath is awesome. It's revealing to hear it without the instrumentation around it.
Greg Lake was always my favorite vocalist. The characteristics and timbre of his voice was one the most important elements along with the outstanding and gripping lyrics he sang. His powerful voice had an incredible range. From shouting out the distorted, terrifying words on "Schizoid Man" to the delicate and beautiful lyrics on "I Talk to the Wind and "Moonchild". "Epitaph" is one of his best performances, with wonderful harmonies. Also, he was in two of the greatest bands of the time, Crimson and ELP. From 1969 until 1977, his voice dominated that amazing era in music. ELP's Tarkus, the screaming on "Bitches Crytal" (Witchcraft, Sadness, Madness, Turning in their minds.) to the beautiful ballad "From the Beginning" on Trilogy. His voice will forever live on.
Yes, and a number of others, but yes. Absolutely yes.
What an unreal feeling to be crying while Greg Lake’s hauntingly beautiful voice sings “crying”. Only King Crimson could do that to me.
Nothing can stop King Crimson everlasting climax!
Don't be ashamed, either. Real men cry. Greg also references crying in an ELP song. He was such a real, genuine man. 💖
Wow, Greg Lake, so much expression in his voice, so much passion, superb natural breathing technique. This is a real singer, putting his heart out in every word. I have no words....
OMG OMG, that VOICE.
It's like a dream. What an incredible version to hear Greg's beautiful crying voice acapella. Omg I'm getting chills as I type this on my phone.
"I fear tomorrow I'll be crying" ... shit I hear Greg sing like that and I'm crying right now. RIP legend.
Greg Lake's voice alone brings tears up. This album made the standards if it were some at the time very high for future generations of prog bands to come. RIP Greg
Well put Norm
Oh how much does the Music owe you Greg, such a beautiful voice and unique style for composing, changed so much about the way Music was being made, a true master of his art. Really wish I could've seen him live
One of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard in my life. Thank you, King Crimson, thank you Greg Lake.
I didn't think I could Love Greg Lake's voice more than I already did....................
I WAS WRONG
I am speechless ❤
Greg's vocals were beyond amazing in the early days. This is quite an amazing example of that!
Can’t stop crying listening Greg’s voice, touching directly to my heart....... and all my senses
I sit here crying listening to the voice of an angel. RIP, Greg.
I'm 70 and this is my favorite acapella song ever.
The most beautiful voice.
This was the last song my father and I listened to. My father was such a product of his time. He was THE party, not at it lol. The man never stopped. Rip Dad. I hope this song was a trippy and beautiful Good Bye to a trippy and amazing man! Thank you! I love you! Cheers and a bong hit! Rip Sir lol.
Terrific, haunting and sublime. Always when I listen to this version leaves me in the edge of cryiiiiiiiing, literally
During the "I fear tomorrow I'll be crying" bit, it sounds like Greg is trying to hold back tears. Its heart wrenching
I'm crying, the voice of Greg is amazing. R.I.P. Greg.
Damm hypnotic voice, rip Greg Lake.
What a lovely voice.
Mixed feelings with this track! On one hand, truly amazed and captivated by Greg Lake's voice, and on the other hand, sad for knowing the world lost such a talented man!
i bought this album in 1978 out of sheer curiosity because of the cover. When I heard 21st century schizoid man, I was terrified, i talk to the wind left me mesmerized and epitaph left me speechless. To this day I listen to this record at least once a week. The old vinyl resides in my studio....
The mix is perfect, highlighting the voice on most of the track, and bringing the rest of the instruments, especially the mellotron at the end. Simply beautiful!
A well deserved tribute to the great Greg Lake.
The original King Crimson, as evidenced in Greg Lake’s vocals, was able to tap into the future of the world. It’s as Greg sang- “The fate of all mankind, I see, is in the hands of FOOLS.” Knowledge is a deadly force, as rules are set by fools who’ve gained power & control over the truth with lies, and many are sadly ignorant of reality. It’s as if King Crimson visited the future, and warned us from the past, of the path the world was on in their prophetic words & music. The world has lost its mind.
You have lost your mind. He just sang, yes beautifully and deeply, but about the truths that already existed long ago. It was actually way more common in the past times than it is now, so maybe you shouldn't jump into conclusions that much and chill your need for crazy theories.
Wlodek Zhelnov She has *far* from lost her mind. This is as fitting today as it was then. Wake up.
The best part is how the intro music to the narration is extremely young Joseph and Battle Tendency-like.
This song only fit for Greg Lake, no one can sing like him perfectly, now and then.
God I love that man's voice, ty King Crimson, ty ELP, ty Greg Lake solo. Sadly missed
What is fantastic about this rendition is one is able to hear the range of Greg Lake's vocal performance.
With the version(s) commonly available to us, the public and purchaser, his vocal is cut thin by the tracks of the other instruments--which of course is no one's fault, but the limits of technology of the times.
This rendition is quite intimate. The performance and the message are quite haunting.
When listening to these episodes, it is quite fortunate that we have King Crimson still and, at least I am a believer, the future will only show how relevant and influential they are to modern music. Thank you.
Absolutely breathtaking! Greg Lake was the quintessential musician.
it sends shivers up your spine!!!!
Shit it's been 50 years... can't believe I've been listening to such old stuff.
This is timeless music ♾
This voice cannot be replaced
It’s ridiculous I never heard of Greg Lake’s voice prior to getting into prog. His voice was absolutely huge, and this song exemplifies that…
Having heard the unofficial acapella version earlier in CZcams, this was not exactly a new thing. But definitely feels great that finally we have an official release of this masterpiece! That too trimmed in some portions (doing justice to this acapella version).
Thanks for this treat. He was so spot on. This track gives me chills. I miss him.
When I first started listening to King Crimson 40 years ago, this track, this voice did it for me. I knew I had found something good.
Greg Lake is my favorite progressive rock front man. Absolutely stunning. I never saw him live with King Crimson but thankfully I did see him four times with ELP.
I don’t care what anyone says, for me at least, NO ONE could sing this beautiful song like Greg Lake could! Every one who tried were pale imitations. I will always love and miss the incredible voice and musician Greg Lake. Singing and playing on that great stage in the sky with Keith, Cozy and all his friends. Love you Greg.
I so much agree! Our Atlanta concert was so awesome, the only thing I missed was the vocals. Can't replace them with three drummers!...
Greg Lake.
Absolute Legend.
No doubt
Greg Lake is simply Irreplaceable, what a track.
King Crimson friday ❤
I love this version so much, gives me endlessly looping goosebumps
His singing was so emotional, pure, and beautiful! Thank you very much for this treasure!
Interesting how 39 people (right now anyway,,, Janurary 7th, 2020,) can be bothered to click "thumbs down"
Must be reading Rolling Stone magazine while sitting at home wishing they were musicians!
Doesn't matter if listening to Beach Boys or Greg Lake, great is great even beyond personal taste and this,
this is completely fabulous !
It was so moving to listen to this. Thank God, and Greg, for this utter beauty.
Greg Lake is phenomanal.
My father passed away recently. We got shitfaced and smoked a lot of weed before he died. This was one of the songs we listened to that night, and it was perfect! I love you Dad. I'm still partying, I know that you would be proud!
Greg Lakes best vocal performance
Thanks for this. Love the band but this needs to be preserved forever. R.I.P. Greg Lake
The best band that will ever exist, period.
Greg Lake has the most beautiful angelic voice in Progressive Rock! No one could sing this hauntingly beautiful song like he could. Everyone else who tried were just pale imitations..
Goosebumps
My favorite vocalist
Amazing lyrics -- amazing singing. The song means as much today as it did over 50 years ago. The war, at this time, is going on between Russia and Ukraine. This song brings tears to my eyes.
Una voce incredibile...non mi sembrava ..non ho parole ..in questo brano a cappella viene fuori un talento di range e interpretazione incredibile...da brivido
Even without the music put shivers down your spine. I hope there are enough Greg´s voice recordings because there should be mankind heritage
Magnificent voice taken from us too soon, RIP Greg Lake. I wore out several LP's of that first album on my crappy turntable from High School and College. The photo you used has Greg looking like the young Tom Welling from his Smallville days. Thanks for this very interesting version.
M0:00dy blues play it again!!
An amazing performance, chills everytime. Rest easy Greg Lake 💜💜💜
Song starts at 2:40
That was incredible. Took me to another stratosphere. RIP Greg Lake, your gifts will live on forever. I am so sorry you are no longer with us. God Bless.
Ah, but he is! In one form of energy, or another!
One of the best vocalists in rock music.
👋👋👋🤘round of applause for this amazing performance by the splendid Mr Lake
Amazing, great, 50 years of this masterpiece, how much talent is together, RIP Greg, thank you Robert for changing the music and musical tracency
One of King Crimson's greatest treasures in his exceptional collection ... Greg Lake is sublime here ... his best work!
did you forget all ELP Greatness >?????
@@ChrisNotoProgman No, no ... I didn't forget it and it has awesome songs like "From the Beginning" or "Lucky Man" or "Still ... You Turn Me On"
I always speak of the voice of Greg Lake ... apart from the great works of ELP.
Best vocal and instrumental version of a one of the darkest and most clever song of all times
I've upvoted other comments with the timestamp but press here 2:40 to use King Crimson on the intro.
Thank you

Hearing the mellotron and drums break through at the end is really powerful for me
Beautiful! Greg Lake was host to a singing voice that was filled with so much tone. In this piece, Greg's voice is an actor masterfully reciting a dark play's lines. Breathtaking.
Fucking hell WHAT A VOICE.
youandwhosearmy? The best voice ever in rock and roll
Written at the height of the Cold War, haunting, and almost frightening in its own way. . .Each time I listen to it, the absolute horror of what could have been lives in his voice, within the music the end of mankind itself, at the hands of egotistical and evil men. . . . . . .
Reminds me of John Lennon
That's a fabulous singing!
what a voice,I heard it in `69 and it sent shivers down my spine, does exactly the same 50 years later, much missed Greg
I really enjoyed his WONDERFUL voice only and amazing it was!💥
What a voice! KC's best singer. Looking forward to (getting more info on) the box set.
His voice gives me chills. Holy god.
I'm crying... 😭
It's wonderful...
Such an amazing voice.............Greg Lake was truly a Legend.
Meravigliosa, struggente, emozionante, gioia e dolore. Senza tempo. Riposa in pace Greg
Greg is Magnificent 🎤❤️
Gives me chills, every time. What a voice...
Giles on drums.....the man☮
This album is a masterpiece
Greg Lake, practicing for his gig as the voice of an angel some 48 years before he became one.
Wow, that was terrific. One of my all time favorite KC pieces. Very powerful in this simple arrangement.
If I'm not mistaken, I once read in a (K)rimson release booklet a Michael Giles quote stating that "Epitaph" was "... the best Greg Lake vocal performance ever committed to tape."
I played my guitar to this! Couldn't help it! So awesome! Miss you Greg!
one of the the most beautiful voce ever heard for all times
I agree with you one hundred percent, which may explain why I love this album so much, plus all of Emerson, Lake and Palmer albums.
absolutely I just love his voice - so pure nd clear music will miss him
Wow! First time I've heard the isolated vocals of Greg Lake on this track.... amazing! What a voice.
Hauntingly accurate lyrics that we are experiencing today. Thanks, his voice is understated in the album...that is still have. Thanks Greg.
I feel the same things today.Power is in the hands of fools, obviously it's right, we're the "twenty fisrst schizoÏd men" we experiment the ends of times, money rules the wolrd, gride is good (AYN RAND) earth is burning Trump ,Bolsonaro,Poutine are the answer.Afterall we must be enthusiastic to live in this world. No way w're trapped, fools got a lot of brainwashed fans and our future is defintively crushed.
Still unbelievable
Heartbreaking emotion !!! RIP Greg, and thanks
I just can't get enough of him, his voice, so out of this world. I just went to the Crimson concert in Atlanta. It was amazing! But Greg Lake's voice... God! How much I missed it!!
I was in Atlanta, too! It was incredible (of course). I agree with you, his voice is sublime and he is sorely missed.
Once upon a time there was a version of the song on CZcams that combined these vocals with an improved instrumental of the original song and it was the best thing I've heard in my entire life, but now it's gone because of copyright strikes and the world will never hear it ever again
and I didn't downloaded it when I could and now I am suffering....
Hi !
It's on dailymotion :
www.dailymotion.com/video/x3o5pb1
For me too it's the best version ever. This "unreleased" version is horrible, with added drums and other instruments, with a different EQ, etc...
I don't know who did this but I'll slap him because he's destroying King Crimson just for money.
@@AGKyran You’re right. Thanks!

Holy fuckin shit man.
This is beyond awesome. Thanks for making this available to KC/Greg Lake fans. We miss him dearly.
We need to hear more of his beautiful voice. Oh please...
Greg Lake rules.
