    You are my sword
Your love is its own reward
    My heart, I have found
Gets carved surely by the pound
    God knows I tried
Tried to hold you with all my might
    But time has won
And I could never be that strong
    I couldn't be that strong
(Don't cry) that used to be my favourite song
    (Don't cry) tears so bittersweet
(Don't cry) fill my eyes whenever we meet
    It's always bittersweet
    I cut and I bleed
You seem to find that so hard to believe
Well, that's just too, too bad
You could never touch the love that we had
    for the love we had
(Don't cry) some time we'll try to take it back
    (Don't cry) tears so bittersweet
(Don't cry) they kiss my cheeks whenever we meet
    It's always bittersweet
    for a love gone wrong
(Don't cry) that used to be my favourite song
    (Don't cry) tears so bittersweet
(Don't cry) fill my eyes whenever we meet
    Anyway
    We've grown and times change
When we meet now it feels so strange
Well, I hold you like a sword
And you won't cut me, cut me like you did before
    It's always bittersweet
    It's always bittersweet
    It's always bittersweet
    Bittersweet, bittersweet

I was, for a short time, deafened in my left ear after I stood too close to a speaker a HG gig at Coogee Bay Hotel, I think it was in the late 80's. I was too drunk to realise what was happening to my ear until the next day. Nevertheless, worth it.

Almost the perfect guitar pop song of the era. Other contenders:
Under the milky way - The Church
It's a wide open road - The Triffids
Bye bye pride - The Go Betweens
Talking to a Stranger - Hunters and Collectors

What a great band led by a great songwriter. So many good songs and this is one of them. Sometimes I don't think the Gurus are taken into account when great Australian bands are spoken about. I don't know why. Perhaps it's because they are fairly low key when it comes to their public image and don't get or seek the publicity other more well known bands do. But their music stacks up as equal to any bands and always sounds great.
