- At Superbooth 2024, Sonic State caught up with Martin from Modular Audio Tools to take a closer look at his latest creation - MAT 16X8 a 16 channel analog audio interface designed for portable use. This innovative interface boasts 16 in and out channels, 8 channels in stereo mini jacks, and is bus powered for ultimate convenience. Martin explained that he was inspired to create this compact interface after struggling to find a small-sized audio interface with multiple channels on the market.
The interface offers high-quality audio and MIDI capabilities, with the outputs being DC coupled for potential CV control. Martin hinted at future plans to expand the interface to support up to 32 channels and potentially offer a Eurorack-compatible version. While the interface is still in the prototype stage, Martin is optimistic about pricing, aiming to offer it below 500 Euros and possibly even as low as 400 Euros with enough demand. With its class-compliant 2.0 technology, this interface promises plug-and-play compatibility with various platforms and DAWs, making it a versatile option for musicians on the go.

Hi, this is Martin from Modular Audio Tools. I am really overwhelmed by all the positive feedback. I am very pleased that many of you have also missed such a device and I will do everything I can to get it on the market soon. However, there are still many details to be clarified and some organizational and legal hurdles to be overcome. I am very happy to take your feedback on board, some of it has already been taken into account in the current design and can be added as an extension or firmware update at a later date. For now I am starting with the version presented and plan to start crowdfunding soon, if all goes well there will surely be extensions and other versions. Currently I will try to communicate a few things more clearly on the website to answer some questions more clearly. But now I need a few days to recover. Thank you very much for your great interest, Martin
Hi Martin,
Dein Interface hat es auch in mein Video geschafft :)

Ich muss sagen, dass es ein sehr vielversprechendes Produkt ist und ich es gerne in Zukunft mal testen würde.
Viel Erfolg weiterhin bei der Entwicklung!
Even 400 euros I wouldn't entertain this
I’m also interested in
@@koncreteto2758 I was wondering who are the four *diots voting this video down. Thanks for stepping forward.
This is insanely cool, I hope there are more options in this range
The world needs this device. Also a half size 8x4 would be great.
Absolutely, and been needed for ages.
I’ll take double-size, please! 😂
@@foobarbazqux I think you can stack two of the MATs. So no problem 👍
The most exciting product for me by faaaar.
The minute this is available I am buying! And if the breakout to make it 32 channel is available that is an instant buy as well
How does this not exist yet?1
tons of people would like this
I have been saying that for a long time. The TE TX-6 was the closest, but it costs lots of money and does a bunch of extra things we don’t need.
This was the most exciting device this year for me. Companies make all of this gear, but few convenient ways to plug it all up!
Stoked for this looks like a nice es-9 alternative.
I wonder how many times I've googled "small(est) multi input interface". This is the one I've searched for!
pairing two of these for 16 stereo ins would be incredible for dawless setups who still want to be able to mult out stems
PORTABLE 16 INPUTS HIGH QUALITY CONVERTERS NO GIMIKY STUFF = PERFECT AUDIO INTERFACE
PLEASE PLEASE BRING IT TO LIFE, I LL BUY ONE IMMEDIATELY PERSONALLY THIS IS WHAT I V BEEN MISSING FOREVER IN THE MARKET
really awesome to see someone fine a gap in the market and decide to just make an answer themselves. looks like a great device, hope it’s a success
Very usable device. I will get one as soon as it available.
Looks interesting doesn't it,?
Amazing. Can’t wait to order one of these. Dreams do come true.
This looks absolutely amazing!
Cool device great concise presentation
Awesome.. Love it!!
Daumen hoch !
Yes please!
Looks great!
This is great. I barely touch any of the controls on my mixer and have been working out how to rearrange my room to hide it somewhere and free up some more desk space. One suggestion, although not a deal-breaker, would be to have a physical mute button on each channel although I realize this might not be practical or cost-effective in this form-factor.
Nice that it can be upgraded as well. I would love to be an ethernet port on it in the future so multiple units can be daisy chained.
I've had the idea having gear on different pedalboards and have each board its own interface.
Everything I found so far was too big and/or didn't have the features I was after.
Really wish I was on SB to have a conservation with Martin.
And thanks for the videos and hard work Sonicstate staff! As always you guys are the
it can be stacked no cable needed.
cleaver design
@@jamaharon I know but I want to connect multiple boxes. Not just everything to 1 box. I'm looking for the most flexible solution. So I hope in the near future Martin can add this to his designs.
@@JustDoIt-xq9pi sure maybe an adat version
@@jamaharon Yes this was my first idea with a couple RME Digifaces and another brand of which I forgot the name. But I much rather prefer an ethernet port which can offer way more functionality than 8 in or out at 48khz sample rate at maximum.
Fantastic!!!
+1 From me for the linux support
Agreed
Yeah! 👍
Class compliant so Linux support is there.
Need this to replace my 1010music Bluebox
Would also love 16 in and out. But either way good work.
Yay DC coupled. Boo output voltage range. For this to be a home run for modular gear, it needs to be nearly +5v on output.
It is an audio interface. The main purpose is to use it for line-level audio signals. A side effect is that the outputs are already DC-coupled and can already be used to control Eurorack CVs in the -2.5v to 2.5v range. But that's just a small addition. There will probably be an additional board clamped in between that provides eurorack levels on 16 additional in and out ports with -10v to +10v. Please check the website for more information.
Heck yes about time
What a great idea. Count me in as interested.
this looks great
very interested!
Very good
He was so quick to say it worked in Linux. I feel like a bunch of Bitwig Linux nerds must have asked him that question a lot LOL. It's funny how interfaces get huge as soon as they have more than four inputs. I like the old-school MOTU UltraLite Hybrid because it's compact and bus-powered, but that's 8 mono channels + S/PDIF and it's half-rack size. So this is a lot more portable with more channels, and class-compliant is nice. But once something is this compact I can't help thinking it'd be nice to have a built-in battery that lasts as long as a TR-6S...
What use will a battery have with an audio interface?
we need this bro
Brilliant
I want one!
Some of us iPad people have wanted something like this for years. I think the only thing that would be an improvement might be if it could do 32 bit float.
32bit recording is a meaningless.
It only effect dynamic range that is limited by the converters. 24bit gives 144dB DR, 32bit Processing is a different story
Yes please
Ich will das auch❤️❤️❤️ 24 in 8 out wär top. 16x16 auch ok, brauch aber nicht so viele outs
I could go with 16x8 or even 16x4 if it would save some on the cost.
32 in out ist natürlich cool as fuck!!!!
Had to start looking into making something similar I need Eurorack IO to Ableton in spades.
God yes, PLEASE
Nice.. Tiny mixers yes
😎
Amazing, round trip latency would also be good to know
modern ad and da have are way below 1ms, so its more of factor of your computer and driver efficiency
It has 1ms input and 1.5ms output latency. The rest depends on your connected host hardware. I use an iPad Air M1 which runs very stable with 32 sample buffer resulting in exactly 3.83 ms round trip latency using AUM
Can we connect it to computer and create a Dante virtual sound card for it and have it as additional inputs routed through Dante on our MAC’s and into our DAW’s?
Genius
This has a lot of potential to be a future staple for modular/synth users, but MAT will have to play their cards incredibly carefully if they hope to achieve any real success and not just add onto the "WE CAN DEFINITELY COMPETE WITH THE ES9 GUYS WE SWEAR" pile. Open-sourcing the project, or at the very least providing comprehensive documentation for community-made expanders is a must if they hope for the device to sell more than a handful units.
This is an audio interface, it's not just for modular. There's definitely a gap in the market for something like this and most people don't need an audio interface to be open source lol
I don't see how all of this relevant, its a simple solution for products that are already available and used just in a smaller form factor. btw ES is also just one guy
ADAT in and out cv compatible instant buy...make it
I was thinking about it too, but my rme digiface usb is probably 4 times the weight.
Do you know OctaWave? nice but only output
I want to know more
I would be highly interested if somehow this device would have a +/-10V range !
He said it will if there will be demand. but its 10Vpp (+5/-5)
will it have an asio driver?
Yes
@@marf-MAT great thank you! and good luck!
The only alternatives are those ancient and still expensive Soundcraft and Behringer headless digital mixers
Linux compatible? Take my money!!!
A bit unfortunate that we are using more and more of 3.5 mini jacks for things like this. It would be better if we went to using 4.4 jacks, which are more robust (better connection contact, less prone to damage).
but that will make it more than four time larger and we already have many, i also don't agree about reliability, its depends on the connectors quality and case design. It is intended for eurorack...
I wantwd to keep it small and with stereo jacks. But there are huge differences in the quality of the jacks. Those I use are gold plated and fit very tight.
I didn't mean to criticize the device, just putting the idea out there
@@RadekPilich its a good idea, maybe for desktops rigs and studios
I mean it's not like 3.5mm stereo to 1/4" cables are overly expensive, and the portability is a large part of his intent for the product. This is a pretty big gamechanger for touring artists who tape out their live hardware setups to ensure they are in compliance with Carry-on constraints for air travel, because checking any luggage, but even more so electronic music gear is pretty much a schrodinger's cat type situation that is an unacceptable risk if it means the difference between performing or not, not to mention that how many pieces of gear would you be alright with never getting back because the reality is that somewhere along the chain of custody of luggage in regards to checking a bag with airlines it's pretty common for valuable items to never be seen again, or somehow not get loaded on the same flight as you are.
Teenage Engineering has a tiny interface, but the price is…? 🤷🏻♂️
the TX-6 is a TE product, so you're really paying that $1200 for the build and aesthetics. the fact that its an actual mixer and interface is merely a bonus :p
