    this is really dumb, but ever since i heard there would be a live action remake of aladdin, i really hoped this song would be kept and the character of the mother would be brought back (i knew of the song because i used to own the aladdin dvd, which had it as a special feature). i think it would have certainly elevated the new movie and made aladdin himself a much more interesting and relatable character.
    also this is neither here nor there but "speechless" is a boring song.

      @DreamsoundsVideo  Před 3 lety +47

      I agree wholeheartedly. I think "Proud of Your Boy" would've easily be a standout song for the movie. I like the "One Jump Ahead" reprise, but it is far less pronounced than the former

      @@DreamsoundsVideo I had the strangest mental image of a cut scene from the third movie with Aladdin singing this at his mother's grave before meeting Khassim. I know it'd never work, especially with Khaseem explicitly NOT being perfect due to the film's 'broken pedestal' narrative, but it might have been interesting to see, even in the extremely low-budget DIsneyToons animation.

    • @vannakinder352

      Speechless is the most redundant song ever. As someone who is a Middle-Eastern woman (Which is kind of why I thumbs up to anything shitting on the remake for reasons), I always wonder why to include this song as a vindication against sexism to make it clear compared to movies where sexism is more present/shunning to the female protagonist and is one of the plot points like Beauty and the Beast. I think if Aladdin was remade with cultural/setting references changed but everything else staying the same the song speechless would not be in there. I think if he kept Proud of Your Boy it would be the films "Go the Distance" and could still be contained in the plot. Even though I have not liked a remake and believe they should stop trying to correct things and learn from mistakes so they could focus on not taking 6 years to produce sub-par movie that was embarrassing to put under the Disney title (frozen 2 and the ralph sequel not even just bc they are sequels but bc vhs one year made sequels are all better than either 2 tbh).

    • @casir.7407
      @casir.7407 Před 3 lety +4

      @@vannakinder352 i had never even considered it -like, neither belle nor ariel (not even tiana) have a song dedicated to them voicing just how much they hate sexism and being subjected to it. and adding the extremely weird "disappearing" effect that makes no sense... its really a waste of time that could be used to actually develop jasmine's character.
      a bit off topic, but im just a bit surprised that Nowadays i can name three directors from the middle east working in big blockbuster movies that i think could have done an amazing job if given the chance to direct their own version of aladdin, with huge budgets and all, and as far as ive heard none were even considered. haifaa al-mansour having directed Mary Shelley, a historical biopic; anna lily amirpour, who is a bit smaller in scale (she directed that cannibal movie a few years back, i wonder if shes still working after that) but who surely could make a musical shine; and marjane satrapi, who i just watched her marie curie biopic which i found imaginative and pretty original at times. none of these choices would be weider than hiring goddamn guy ritchie, who had never directed a musical in his life.

    This makes me think of the heart wrenching feeling when my fiancé’s Mom told her she wouldn’t be coming to our wedding. My Love, who was a straight A student, never really misbehaved, who used to stay up late at night praying to not be gay... And even though she and I both knew it was coming, you don’t really understand what that is like until you experience it for yourself... What I want to see from Disney moving forward is something inherently speaks to LGBT struggle, on the forefront, like Proud of Your Boy, but even more so. Even if they have to have no love interest, to get around the whole marketing in China thing, just something that speaks to the heart of individual identity and having to separate yourself from someone who may have been important in your life because of who you are. They tried to do that with Elsa but it doesn’t really work in the way I’m talking about. I want something that is written to resonate with the pain and strength of the choices you find yourself forced to make in the face of truly hateful adversity. And then, something that gives young LGBT+ kids hope for found family, and a better future for them. A better future for all LGBT+ people. But I doubt we’ll ever get it. And considering that, I’m glad that you and other people can find snippets of those sentiments throughout Disney history.

    It makes my blood boil the fact the song was adopted by the alt-right group Proud Boys. Those neanderthals try to twist the song's message to fit their toxic masculinity image. You, on the other hand, did the song's message justice even as a straight guy who supports LGBT rights. No matter what orientation we are, we all want to make our parents proud. You don't need to need to be a gun-wielding, aggressive misogynist to do it. Having compassion for others, no matter who or what they are makes you a real man in my book. I’ve always been curious why, when they make these live action remakes, they don’t use more of the Broadway songs. I was gutted when Beauty and the Beast didn’t give me “If I Can’t Love Her,” but at the same time I don’t think they would have done it justice. Ditto to Proud of Your Boy. Both of those songs, both having been made with Ashman and Menken, tear at my heart more than most of the songs that actually were in the original movies. Especially since, due to the way the instrumental tracks in the movies were used to make the Broadway musicals, they fit in more with the music we’re expecting in the movies than things like that new one they made for Jasmine.

    Unpopular opinion: It's a good thing that Proud of Your Boy wasn't in the live action remake.
    It's an incredible song, don't get me wrong. I absolutely love it, and it's extremely powerful. However, there are two reasons I'm glad it wasn't included.
    One. With all the other changes, from the immense change in Genie's character to the addition of Speechless, a 'new' song would probably make some people upset, leading to more hate to the movie and more criticism on Disney.
    Two. This is the important one that I will probably get bashed over, but I'm saying it anyway. Aladdin was the diamond in the rough. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is a constant through most Disney tellings of the story. He was good because it was in his heart, not because of a motivation to make his parents proud, or anything like that. Good for the sake of being good, when the world gave him no reason to be. If his only motivation to be good was immense guilt and self-depreciation, wouldn't that change things a bit? Definitely a good person, but would he still be the diamond in the rough?
    (Also, please note that I don't want to say that I am specifically against the song, or that I don't think being good to make someone proud takes away the meaning behind it. I just wanted to say this, more as something to think about and not as an actual argument.)

    The more i come back to Proud of Your Boy... The more i notice how its clearly **always** (not just here) queerly obvs. Like, i feel that anyone singin it is in a closet of some kind, or just has dealt with that before; like an eggy trans gal :3 or a gay boy lamentin his lack of perfection like other men achieve so easily...
    "Since i wasnt born perfect like dad or you" is so queerly clearly the sentiment of a gay or trans or otherwise queer kid who just laments endlessly how hard it is to exist in a world that expects them to exist in a very specific way... To have been born perfect, or else to have perfected the imitation of havin been born perfect.
    When still strugglin with the feelings of bein in the closet, regardless of how much we realise about ourselves, we are always gonna have moments where we in one way or another, lament or rage at or otherwise, feel intensely about how we werent just born perfect like the endoallo cishets who so easily manage in this world theyve constructed only for themselves
    Its def extra lamentful to be sung by a trans person, regardless of assigned gender even, bcuz the notes take on an added layer of meaning... Bcuz for too many, we will nvr be able to make our parents proud of their boy... Whether thats cuz we were nvr boys or they nvr accepted us as the boys we were
    We want them to be proud of that past version of ourselves who needed to hear such so desperately... But they can nvr be proud of their boys if they refuse to see them for who they rly are

    I love Humiliate the Boy but Im not surprised it was cut, it’s a much much darker version of the Prince Ali reprise in the final release I believe its the last song Howard Ashman wrote in the hospital before passing

    Do you have any references on where to read the original script structure of the 1992 movie (or the 1988 edition you mention)? I have heard much about it, but I have found the actual details to be sparse.

    Speechles is okay, I guess, but it kind of lacks heart and soul. They should've had Proud Of Your Boy in the remake

    Idk if it’s just me but....Pasek and Paul? Seriously? Why? I mean I know why, cause their musicals were doing very well at the time, but....I’m sorry their music is the most boring cookie cuter white bread no crust untoasted fluff I’ve ever heard.

      Noemi Fierros half of their songs end with the same phrase repeating over and over again, it’s so redundant

      To be fair, it was lyrics by Pasek and Paul, and music by Alan Menken.

      I kept trying to say how Abbi was originally supposed to be this tomboyish girl next door type, and that I think it could be cool to have a reimagining of this treatment of Aladdin that has her either as a boy or a trans girl, and then that figures into his arc of accepting who he is as he falls in love with his best friend. Also Aladdin is transmasc and Jasmine is a lovable bitch who gets character development
