    I was just in the same boat back in January. I was trying to decide whether to get a 2020 Model 3, or 2017 Model S. We decided we really preferred the cargo space with the hatchback and instrument panel screen in the S over the advantages of a newer 3. We ended up getting a 2017 S 100D with Enhanced Autopilot for $32K. Highly recommend finding one with EAP because it'll cost significantly less than one with EAP but yet only run you $2K to upgrade to FSD which also includes the hardware upgrade so it'll essentially become a much newer car. That's what we're doing very soon. We love our S. One of the most beautiful cars on the road, and arguably the most practical used car you can get. Moreso than the 3.

    The 2018 Model S can do FSD only if it has the MCU2 upgrade, but it's a stunted less capable version of FSD. That said, I own a similar one, and it drives me all over town without me doing much of anything. The thing you'll miss out on is the cabin camera features and the remote sentry view. I park my Tesla outside in the Arizona sun. One of the best things about Tesla is that you can set the Cabin Overheat Protection, which keeps the interior around 100° instead of 150° in the summer. It uses about $1.50 worth of electricity to keep that active all day. Plus, when you are about to leave, you just open your app or smartwatch or smart speaker to fully activate climate, and the car will be fully cooled when you get in. No engine running, no fumes, just fresh air at the right temperature.

    ADVICE: I bought my 2021 Model 3 with 41k miles about 7 months ago. I will say a piece of advice/awareness! We were in a van before the 3, getting in and out of a very low car like the 3 is wild. How did we ever ride in cars before? LOL. But for real, the Y will give you a higher vehicle and the seats on a higher stand. Along with more space, that's the reason the Y has outsold the 3.
    I would really only consider the S for more space or an amazing deal, but the S and X do have higher depreciation. Now saying that, buying one used the depreciation has pretty much hit. You also do get more mileage on the S and X. I would really pay attention to what you're doing to decide what battery size you want! I only use 10 to 30% of my battery daily! We do travel sometimes, but when you look at the big picture it's maybe three or four times a year and sometimes only two or three times. I can drive to Atlanta from my house for less than $10 using the supercharging Network, which has me charge for around 15 minutes. But if I'd gotten the bigger battery, I wouldn't have to stop at all. But that's simply because of that distance. If I traveled to Atlanta often, there is zero doubt that I would have a bigger battery. But I really don't, so I am excited that I didn't pay extra. For our situation.

    @DonLandis Před měsícem +3

    Nice interview but I detected 2 inaccuracies in your answers. I owned a 2020 Model S Long RangePlus we mostly used for road trips and a little local driving.
    1. The warranty is actually in two parts so Brandon needs to understand the difference. The drive train including traction battery is 150,000miles or 8 years. The bumper to bumper for everything else is 5 years or 50,000 miles. I traded my 2020 Model S in after 4 years this March on a new one. In 4 years I had two warranty repairs they did at my house. The washer fluid tank leaked and the charge port door stopped opening with the button on the plug but still worked with the screen access. Tesla swapped the circuit board and it was fixed.
    2. The 2020 Model S has a battery that doesn't charge at 250KW. It is a 150KW maximum on all Superchargers and you are correct that from 10% to 90% it takes about 45-50 minutes.
    My new 2024 Model S LR can fully charge in about 25 minutes and peaks at 250KW adding 390 miles in that time for long road trip. Hardly enough time for bathroom break. Typically we have to stop more often so a 10 minute boost twice a day is good.
    My wife has a 2021 Model Y and loves it. It has the 250KW Supercharging speed. We love the hatch back and will never own a trunk lid ever again. She just got new tires after 32,000 miles. Cost was $1400 for the top quietest Hankook brand.
    Also for Brandon- When I traded my 2020 Model S in it still had plenty of B2B warranty miles remaining but the 4 year limit expired. Tesla gave me $43,000 in on a 2024 and I transferred the free Supercharging for life as well as my Full Self Driving to my new one. That was a perk at the time. So, a low miles 2020 with full warranty may be beyond your budget. I also typically still had 387 miles range on the battery on road trips. I love Full Self Driving and rarely go anywhere and drive manually anymore. Just safer and more relaxing on long trips. The computer helps me predict when to go to a Supercharger to charge.
    If you have to have a driver's instrument display, they are available from 3rd party accessories companies that just plug in and mount behind the steering wheel. If I drove the Y more I would buy one for $350-$500.
    Farzad- Love your channel and interviews. Keep up the good content!

      @@spacep0d I like to think I know a lot about Tesla, but was there a M-3 refresh in 2021? Anyway, we agree that 2023/24 was no styling exercise for M-3, or just adding some bells and whistles - it was a 50% overhaul of the entire car. Most of this was new parts that go unnoticed but significantly improve many aspects (COGS, speed, quality, performance, etc.) for the M-3, but will ultimately create more standardization across models and increase economies of scale. The Model-Y will be overhauled soon and incorporate many of these new parts. This can be overlaid on Tesla's unrelenting daily/weekly improvements in manufacturing and products.

    • @spacep0d
      @spacep0d Před měsícem

      @@machoopichoo2 First, let's not call it the M-3. It's not a BMW M3 or M-3, it's a Model 3. Yes, first refresh was in 2021 adding a heat pump, better insulation for windows, steering wheel heating, a little more range, etc.
      For 2024, it was a deeper redesign (more than a refresh, but still a refresh). Overhauling is mechanic-speak, but a redesign can and does include the mechanics of the car (not just styling). Design is not just about aesthetics or appearance. Tesla's own unboxed method is part of their overall production method.

      "...an overhaul typically focuses on repairing and optimizing existing components, while a redesign involves a more fundamental rethinking and reconstruction of the design itself to achieve desired improvements." I would argue that the "highland" Model 3 was the former and the interim next gen. (do you have a preferred name for that?) is the latter.
      Of the ~50% of parts being updated, do you think those were designed by people with the title designer or engineer? I am an Industrial Designer, so I know design is a wholistic activity, not just aesthetics.
      Either way, the point is the Model 3 (I will avoid using M-3, to not associate the Tesla with an inferior German product), is far more than an aesthetic refresh, as is being implied by many.

      @@machoopichoo2 I don't mind you calling it an overhaul. You're free to call it anything you want, but I'm calling it a redesign in keeping with the automotive industry.
      I'm a professional artist, but the auto industry tends to call these changes a redesign. Overhaul is really a semantic difference.
      Model 3 is a much better name, and yeah we wouldn't want to confuse people think we're talking about the BMW M3, right?

    Model S has more parts that can break, so it is most times more expensive to repair. And the older models had a lot of battery problems, so make sure it has at least 2 years of warranty on the battery left (normally 8 years or between 100.000-150.000 miles). Then the older model s have sometimes their charging speed reduced.... But not sure which years are fixed. With model 3 & Y there is not much that can break.... In Germany the suspension is most times a weak point and the breakers (because they don't get used much and oxidize - so regularly use the breakes)... I think the new model 3 highland refresh is a nice step in the direction of the model s without all the problems the model s has.... Model s has just too many toys that could break. But if you buy used definitely get the battery checked.
    About the battery never failing: here in Germany a guy drives his model s for 1.500.000km (nearly 950.000miles) already, but he had his battery replaced two times... So I think the early batteries have broken down a lot... But just saw a video about a guy that had his 2018 model 3 with over 500.000km (350.000 miles) checked and everything was like new. All repairs he had to do were under 6000€ (5300$) which is quite low for a car with that many miles...
    So definitely buy one within the warranty, with good battery with at least 90% left, good charging speed.
    About the road noise it is bad... Even a VW id3 is much quieter... Or the new model 3 highland is now much better with wind/driving noise. And the model s is quieter, too if course.
    Warranty is 4 years for everything, 8 years for battery and drive train (both are limited by a miles range, I think 60.000 and 120.000 miles, but not sure.
    For Tesla Fan Boys these two guys really don't know much about Teslas

    For quiet tires use a softer compound tire, and go with a lower speed rating, you don't need a zr rated tire if your not tracking the car or running at over 120mph to 150mph for over an hour, understand speed rating, load rating and what is the use case you want.

    In regards to regen braking, switching between my wife’s Tesla 3 to the gutted Honda odyssey I inherited as my main ride is very easy. I would say though that at stop signs or lights, don’t stop with the brake however when already stopped, I keep my foot on the brake. I think under duress, mentally, through a lifetime of driving, my default when stopped is foot in brake. In an emergency where I have to take an instinctive action I’ll need to be at my default foot position.

    Regarding tires I still have my original 2020 factory tires; but i only run them during the winter season. For summer , I run pilot sport 4s. I’m pretty sure the excessive tire wear comes from running all season tires during summer
