  • Why do some albums move us deeply, while others just feel like a disconnected compilation of songs? Why do some albums speak to us in some way we can't quite define, while others seems flat and uninspiring? Join me to hear my theory on album sequencing

To Pimp A Butterfly is a classic example of the heroes journey in rap music and the way its so seamlessly weaved into real events in his life is amazing and why its a classic album.

Thanks, James. I'm yet again loving another of your videos. Have you considered reaching out to Juston Hawkins on CZcams? A collaboration would probably bring down the internet, ha. Also, thanks for letting me know about what happened to the Inner Circle. I did wonder why you weren't getting my monthly payments. But I will check out your EPs (buy them.) And congratulations on the upcoming album - which I'm sure will be as thoroughly entertaining as your video content :)

Prog Rock is pretty much the genre that really did put a lot of thought into album sequencing. More than any other genre I would say.

hard to believe Permission to Land is almost 20 years old... it felt like rock music was gone from the mainstream when it was released, then within 2 years, legacy bands from the 70's and 80's were selling out arenas again. we need another album like this.

Dear Stone Roses fans who keep correcting me...
I KNOW 'Elizabeth My Dear' is an anti-monarchy song. But as I say several times in the video, I am MAKING UP A STORY to link the tracks (basically to show how the tracklisting of these albums follow a literary device called the Hero's Journey).
I also know there are some forwards bits overdubbed onto 'Dont Stop'. But thankyou for your usual list of irritating corrections.
Only the obsessive wing of the Stone Roses fanbase can be this annoying.

    Once again, great work!
A few randomish points that popped into my head while watching:
    1) Is don't stop really waterfall played backwards? For some reason that blew me away!
    2) The Darkness have done well to be considered a classic and on a par with three incredible albums. Although I do love Take your hands off my woman.
3)I know it was just a story to convey the arc of the Hero's Journey but maybe the female drummer is actually an analogy for the relationship between the band and John Squire?!
    4) Please, PLEASE, get Melissa Lim on your channel if at all possible. That would probably break the Oasis section of the internet...
    5)Exciting news about the album.

Re the Darkness - I bloody love that album hahahahahaha
It's obviously a comedic escapade, and while not as mindblowing as WTSMG, I do think it's a classic!

When you look at the lyrics of She Bangs The Drum strikes me they taking about the Manchester music scene, and them coming on to the scene to take over especially that first verse
Maybe the "And Spiral" was a sky dig at the Inspiral Carpets
So the She is probably 'Manchester'

I think the Melissa Lim influence is widely overrated .Think the fact ,'Talk Tonight' was Noel's most personal song and he said it was about that meeting that he actually felt something more .. She's hardly Noel's Pattie Boyd

I call it "the X factor." Some bands just possess innumerable talent that just seems to melt into the form of music. The form is put onto record, and the record is near flawless. I can't really explain it further, but such examples would be:
    Revolver by The Beatles
    Nevermind by Nirvana
(What's the Story) Morning Glory by Oasis
    The Stone Roses
    Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division
    Grace by Jeff Buckley
    Loveless by My Bloody Valentine

I think you’re looking for patterns where none exist, or at least where they are less precise than you’re making out.
I mean, it’s very obvious what ‘Elizabeth My Dear’ is about. It’s an anti-monarchy song. It’s also part of an album that features lemons and the French flag on the cover, both of which symbolise the revolutionary circumstances of the 1968 French uprising.
How you missed that is beyond me. Did you really not know?

James you should do a deep dive into the albums Alex Turner wrote about Alexa Chung, as it reminds me somewhat of the Noel-Melissa Masterplan conspiracy. Most notably there is Suck it and See, which is confirmed to be about Turner’s conflicting feelings for Chung as things were breaking off, while he also penned some songs for her on Humbug. Most interestingly though, is the possibility that AM- or at least some of it- lingers very much in the shadow of their relationship, despite its darker, sexier sound and apparent focus on hookup culture. While I wouldn’t deny that is a big lyrical theme in the album, I can’t help but think that songs like Do I Wanna Know, Why’d you only call me when you’re high and Fireside are at least partly inspired by Alexa, and Alex’s remaining feelings for her- what do you think about this theory, do you think it’s something you could look into for a video? Lyrics like “Crawlin back to you”, “Decided that once again I was just dreaming/ of bumping into you” and “I thought I was yours forever/ or maybe I was mistaken” give me that impression, might be clutching at straws but I find it kind of fascinating, especially considering they are supposedly still good friends, while rumours sometimes swirl about them getting back together.
All your talk of great albums having a story structure has made me wonder about AM, although the same could be said for any Arctic record. Great video mate, always a pleasure to watch :)

Interesting. The fact of the matter although "Shakespearean" all of it is about selling the soul. Forgive my directness. Its of my religious and literary experience that true love is a type of treasure. The arrogance surrounding its departure from life is part of dark force conspiracy. Juliet should have run off with romeo. As a sidenote noel should have stayed in america with the girl. And so on. The underlying truth is that a false materialism or lie is often used to sway one into believing choice exists. Choice appears random but is an illusion. There is only the truth. That sad truth is the heart. It will long for its hero for all eternity. Some may understand. Some may not. Yet as we can see in the world narcissism is more than just a disease its the wrong road. The sin of damnation. Money cant buy love because if real comes from god.
