What Can We Do To Encourage New, Young Railway Modellers

  • With so many videos and talks about the impending doom of our hobby at the moment regarding costs and the lack of youngsters coming through, I take a look back on my own childhood reasons for starting the hobby, leaving and returning much later in life. I also take a deeper look at how Evie has become involved in Model railways and question 'will she stay in the hobby?'
I also take a look at what we can do as parents to encourage youngsters to have a go!

My 10 year old son and I run our channel together and share the hobby, and he has plenty of negative experiences with gatekeepers in the model train community. There are a lot of things we can do, or not do: not turn our noses up at DC or starter sets, not get hung up on prototype, not be critical of smaller layouts that may be as simple as an oval, make getting into DCC (or the next big thing) so costly, not get upset with kids being at train shows, step back at train shows or layouts to give kids an opportunity to see, don't be offended if someone is interested in Thomas, actively share the hobby with young people, etc. It is always amazing to me the number of older people at train shows, usually 60+, who refuse to step out of the way for kids to have a chance to look at what is for sale or at the layouts.

I've experienced similar things to what you mentioned. I do modelling with my grandson age 12, and he has his own Dylington Model Railway channel, which features his model railway. It's great to encourage the youngsters into the hobby. Right, we're off to check out your channel......cheers James 🙂👍

@TwoRailfans, Hello, thank you so much for once again watching one of our videos. It is fantastic to see you working so close with young David on your model railway and your channel. It is so nice to see you both working together and enjoying your time with one and other. Without a doubt you are absolutely spot on with everything you have said in your comment, i couldn't agree more. It's sad to hear of the negative experiences you have had within the hobby, we too have had a number of incidents but just keep doing what you do and enjoy it. Keep up the great work and I look forward to watching more of your content !

I remember in the 70s saving for months to by a loco or truck. We had patience. Getting back to the hobby since retirement nearly everything I bought is second hand there’s bargains to be had. Some people are obsessed with new but 50 year old models still run well with a little service. What things last like that now?
Plus some older modellers make you feel stupid cos you don’t or can’t make a realistic model sometimes making it feel like an elitist club.
Love the way you and Evie make it a fun time to spend together. You both are inspiring me not to worry about it being perfect but to have fun.

Thank you so much for watching the video and your very kind comment. I absolutely agree 100% with what you are saying. I remember as a youngster being taught quite simply that money doesn't grow on trees and if you wanted something 'saving' had to be done. And you are right about older models too, I regularly run my locos that i had back as a youngster in the early 1990's. They still run like clockwork and you definitely don't need the latest models to enjoy the hobby. Thank you so much once again for your time. All the best, Martin

Excellent video and discussion, as well as ideas and examples of execution. The problem with these trends in hobbies ("our hobby's dying," "we must get kids involved...") is they become embroiled with and interpreted through our socio-political views. We never understand the world changes. No one plays with wood/steel wheels and a stick anymore. We see very, very few kids play with marionettes anymore. We as adults create the world our kids grow up in. We invent the tech for us, and it phases down. In the end, the hobby is called "modeling" and that is what our kids will do. They will model us. And just as we adults look for fun, so do kids. In today's world, kids feel freer to express who they are and how they identify, so the stigma of being a "nerd with trains" is actually lessoning. I taught in an urban/inner-city school for most of my career, and when I got into trains in my early 50s, I put a set in my classroom, and my tough, hardcore kids loved it. They do not get exposed to some things and it is not in the culture many times. In the end, fun and joy add elements, but our modeling behavior and not trying to force kids into anything. As you said, you can find angles that they can be a part of it if not into it. Many various answers, and the path is already laid whether we see it below our feet our not.

Hello Anthony, thank you for watching and commenting on the video. You have a fantastic way with words and always put together fantastic responses in the comments which i cant thank you enough for. I think you are absolutely correct Anthony in what your saying regarding kids these days being more free to express themselves. From what is see in society, it certainly seems slightly easier these days to be an individual with maybe different ideas, opinions, views and interests without too much prejudice against them. This is a 100% a good thing and should be encouraged to help them grow in to adulthood without fear of being who they are.
On a side note, as you know i've had a short break from social media over the festive period, i just wanted to say how nice it was to sit back tonight and listen in on your live stream. I have very much missed being along for the last 6 -8 weeks or so. keep up the good work my good man! All the best to you and your family.

Golden Rule for most things in life; Have Fun! If you're having fun, you're on the right track.
Silver Rule for most hobbies; Have fun while creating something. I'm making paper cars in 1/32 scale and they look like boxes. It doesn't cost me anything, but the amount of fun is Priceless.
I've lived by the railway most of my life. I love taking the train somewhere. I can spend an afternoon in the spring sun, looking at people going away for their adventures, seeing the excited faces and hearing happy voices. That's me. My son shared this once, and he still loves taking the train. He will be a railway modeller in the future.
Kids today don't see trains as a part of their life. They don't see much at all as part of their lives. And as you said; Most parents doesn't have a proper creative hobby either. And there's no "youth hobby centers" around, to bring young ones into any hobby, (not in Sweden at least). There are associations with 65+ old geezers. Perhaps they should connect somehow.

Hello ! hope you are keeping well🙂 Thank you so much for such a lovely reply ! I love the fact you have found a fondness and live by the railway, that is just like me! I've lived right next door to the main line through my home town all my life. Also 'people watching' is something Evie and I like to do! we go on the train and its so much fun seeing what other folk do on their journey. Like you say, railways dont have the same appeal these days, a lot of my friends who years ago travelled by train to school or college simply saw it as a means of getting to somewhere until they were old enough or able to get a car, there was no liking or passion for it, just a means of transport as such.
Thank you again for watching the video and as always we appreciate your time and support.

I am more recently doing English prototype in model Railroading 56 years, since my dad & mom started me at three years old. I work in a Hobby shop, but here in America. When I was a kid, there were lines that were cheaper, cost wise that as a kid, I could afford. Tyco, lifelike, Athearn "blue box" which included railroad car kits. The kits were pretty simple, both they were cheap and looked fine.
At the shop, we have a lot of kids who come in with their parents or grandparents, they are interested.God bless their parents and they do support their hobby.
But I think you hit the major point. If it is fun and something that the kids and parents can do together, it will interest the kids. If the kids come to the shop and have questions, I treat them like an adult and give them my full attention. I think shop people need to do that more. I have a good friend who used to own his own shop. When neighborhood kids came in, he was busy making sure they weren't stealing from them. So he didn't believe kids were interested. In reality, he was discouraging them.
My parents used to take me to ride trains. I asked my mother one day where the big long distance busses went, and what were they like? She took me to the bus station and bought round trip tickets to a place in the center of our State, and she and I went there and back.
I mostly buy second-hand English prototypes, and it has taught me how to rebuild the motors and do more maintenance. I have bought some news, but only if I can get it reasonably. A man in this country was selling a brand new Hornby W1 in the A4 style body, I paid $120.00 for it. And it arrived in a box still in its Hornby brown cardboard outer box brand new.
Yes, it has to be fun, too. I think Evie's creations are brilliant. At some point, I'll share my long-term project. But to be fun, it has to be something the kids and parents do together.
You were spot on in your analysis. Let's ignore the doom sayers and support our kids interests!

Doing a job where you can show and share your knowledge and passion with a smile and super friendly service is a wonderful thing that is sadly missing a fair amount in todays, super fast moving world. @shedmouthjunction I remember as a child the few time adults ignored me in stores. I don't ever want to do that. In all ways, children are our future. The respect we show them when they are young will be a way for them to learn how to treat people as they grow up.
My parents were funny if they were invited to an event like a wedding and I wasn't they would refuse the invitation. There is still a couple at whose wedding I was the only child invited. To this day, she never passed up an opportunity to tell other people that when I was 6, I danced with her at her wedding.
If I am a good man, I owe that to my parents. They raised me to be a gentleman. It doesn't take money to treat people like princes and princesses and let them know that no matter what, they have value. I learned that from my parents, both were public school teachers here in Massachusetts. Now if only I would learn brevity of expression...😉

My grandson's interest in model railways came from watching Thomas at an early age. He's now 12, and as you know, he's now got got his Dylington Model Railway channel and is now about to start a 009 layout. We do like to have fun with the model railway, and as you say, that's a big part of it, and of course, CZcams is now a part of it. I know life will take over, and inevitable, he will move on. But hopefully, we will have created some fond memories that will hopefully bring him back to the hobby. But as you say, by engaging with him and letting him do what he wants with the modelling. He is now starting to think about how to make things a little more realistic, but not losing the fun element. As for cost, most of our stock is second-hand, with a few new ones creeping in, and the railroad models are great. Let's be fair. The top end models are to delicate for my hands, let alone a youngsters......cheers James 🙂👍

@shedmouthjunction Although the plans for his layout are all his ideas, he's had several planning and design clinics with Paul Lunn, who used to write for Model Rail and now writes for Hornby Magazine. Paul has made a few suggestions, which could make it better. Yes, 009 and 00 can run on the same layout as everything is the same scale. Just narrower track and smaller locos and rolling stock, just like the real thing. It should look good if he can get it to look anything like his plans 🙂👍

I think £2.50 for a Wagon is great for letting Evie turn them into animals. They looked as though they were soon for the bin, so you saved them. Great video, with a brilliant centiment and hopefully encouraging new people. I feel some people want a perfect model railway. SAID IT BEFORE but you have a beautiful relationship with Evie , and that leads to one of my main views of why old hobbies especially creative ones are dying out , absent fathers and even if they are there often they are reluctant to get involved with their kids , hell next door spends most of his time shouting and cussing at his boy , but even when couples are together the family demographic has changed with work becoming longer and no longer the 9-5 job most people used to have ,, dunno wether you had them in the south but in the north we had wakes week when the whole town shut down and everywhere was dead as everyone went on holiday but some of us poorer kids stayed at home so me and my bbuddy often ended up at our local transport museum ( the passage of time saw it evolve into the east lancs railway ) and when we got back we'd build models , or when we couldn't afford a kit we re painted our matchbox cars , but otherr hobbies have become the same understandably people using time as an excuse because lives see them having less time goes into other hobbies take fishing for example instant gratification means they are no longer satisfied with puting the hours in learning to fish thier local lodge or canal they want to sit on a day fishing lodge that has been stocked 10 deep with carp so they are catching a decent sized carp every chuck ,,, people need to look at the bigger picture nothing has to be achieved in one evening you may go home without catching a fish but then you ask why did my mate catch one and i didn't ,, hell i once took 6 yrs to build one tamiya 1/35 scout car ,, anyway off tto check out my bunters yard building kits that just arrived in the post

Also worth pointing out with the pricing... What about Lego? In the Lego shop the sets are now upwards of £100. The trick hornby are missing is that they should have more on offer for entry level which is how they started and what they are renowned for. That family in your example may have bought something small if it was a wagon for £5... what I would argue though is that 2nd hand isnt as cheap as it was Martin, sorry it isn't at all. My collection was built over 2 years and i can tell you with certainty that the pricing of new models has driven more to 2nd hand eBay and as a result costs have increased. I only ever bought 2 locos for over £50... And now be lucky to get one under that that is any good.

My advice would be to start off with the good condition pre-owned model trains. I would consider looking at the Hornby train sets from 1990's as they come with more track and rolling stock. Also take advantage of job lots and sales. Then wishlist the models you want and wait for a sale. No need to pay high prices for model trains. I don't and never will.

Brilliant advice there for sure! Definitely wait for the sales and as you say, no need to pay high prices. Older locos are a very good shout, and they are just as much fun to run. Thank you so much for watching the video and taking the time to comment.👍😀

The hobby is affordable, the more people buy fancy new stuff, the more they pass on older stuff, that can picked up very reasonably second hand at shows, shops, toy fairs or on auction sites

Every uk railway modeller is up in arms about "how to attract the next generation". Very few like yourself, or the likes of Pete Waterman have clocked that it "has to be fun". Everyone is obsessed with yelling at Hornby, or gatekeeping their 1930s prototypical layout. Meanwhile in the states, they are making plastic trains based on superheroes, crayons, spaceships... and actually getting kids involved with their parents. Kudos to you!

Think the issue with Hornby is that they aren't catering for entry level like they used to. Simple as that. In a bid to make more profit they have focused on competing in the fine scale market. There are no manufacturers offering that entry level step and that's the issue, where prices of signals are beyond ridiculous at £20+. Personally I don't mind people doing prototype, that's good, it's great to see and learn from, and afterall they are the folks that turn up at shows so good on them. There could be more effort done through their clubs etc to engage schools and or create kids clubs but again with the expensive nature of the hobby it's not really viable to let kids loose on a £100 loco. They also missed a real opportunity with tt120 fan fare around Xmas time due to restricting to 2 sets over £120... If they had had a simple entry set for £50-60 I as many parents would no doubt have started our kids collections off as a good present 🎁

Thank you so much for watching the video and responding with such a nice message! I had no idea such trains were available in the US! I mean what an awesome idea! and exactly what is needed! Superhero trains just sounds epic!! Anything like this that gets parents and children playing, learning and working closely with each other is brilliant in my eyes.
Thank you so much once again..... im off to google to look up these trains! 👍😀🚀

Probably the biggest thing that will put anyone off the hobby isn't the price it's the people who moan about the price without or sometimes with a complete lack of understanding of what causes the price to be what the price is and the historical context of that price, I'd like to think they are in reality a minority but with an outsized voice since the models obviously keep selling since they are not in fact over priced however these folks turn the hobby into a toxic cesspool where everything is microscopically criticised and money is mentioned at every single turn.
We have a contingent of adults who never really grew up who are trying to use "think of the children" as a means to lower the cost of their involvement, not childrens involvement. Quite willing to burn the hobby on the way out the door if they don't get their own way, that's why they do not particularly care that they are turning the hobby from enjoyable to a negative obsession with cash that frankly puts people off.
😊we do it to ourselves by giving these voices of doom and gloom our time and watching their videos amplifying their position.
Also if price = a major factor in getting involved then we would surely have a serious community of people involved in collecting and playing with toys from pound land. Why not right? They are super affordable, the stock changes all the time so there's always something new to collect?... only that's not the case because price is the least factor in people developing a passion for something.

@@HamStrains there might well be something in that. In my case I am both frustrated by prices of new models that put them completely out of my budget, and the impact of those prices on 2nd hand which historically were in my budget, but I am also in the camp that does see a lack of appreciation that there is nothing available at entry level (kids or newcomers, like me)... Does that mean I am willing to "burn the hobby"? I hope not 😆 it's my opinion based on what I've experienced since starting up again. Hornby gets most the flak because they historically used to cater for entry level quite well. I do have an understanding of basic economics to understand that there are reasons for high prices and they are valid. Like I pointed out, only need to look at Lego prices to see it's not just model railways. Although, i'd personally like to understand more about these overheads though if you would care to impart some knowledge on that? Is it just shipping? Material cost? Labour increase? After all, plastic is a readily available product.
      Cheers

    • @HamStrains
      @HamStrains Před 6 měsíci +2

@@_RandomPea its shipping, materials, labour, real estate, fluctuations in values of the currencies that need go be purchased to pay various people along the way, energy prices(every factory and warehouse and shop along the chain uses it)... the cost of living doesn't just apply to people it applies to companies as well which are also run by and staffed by people which any responsible company will seek to pay a fair amount for their work.
There's been this really dumb attempt to paint hornby as being able to magically click their fingers and lower the price of things when in reality they don't have that ability to do that to the degree these people seem go think they do. Now they'll come back with "but accurascale can sell this for X so hornby must be able to as well" only this makes zero sense because hornby is a big company covering multiple brands and markets with much bigger overheads, accurscale can offer the price they do because they rent an office in london to get a UK PO box address to run the business and pretty much operate free of the overheads of being anything but a design company that then lets other players handle all those distribution and other functions hornby does in house, they also have a limited network of stockists that seem cherry picked to be the ones that can shift in sufficient bulk to make the sums work out on keeping the rrp down, hornby has a range of stockists going all the way from the biggest shops down to a tiny model shop run by one bloke. The RRP is set so as to allow this smaller trader to make the cut they need to that is why you can often find the price reduced on many items if you shop around because the bigger shops that shift more volume can afford to knock a bit off the price.
Gotta remember as well that at the end of the day some people will just never be satisfied, no matter what state the economy or the company is in there will always be someone who wants things cheaper simply because they're greedy and would rather have theirs today even if it means running things into the ground and as a business all model companies need to ignore these people like the plague because if they listened to them and kept slashing prices to satisfy them then we'd either be right back where hornby was, broke, or they'd be gone.
I'd love to know if this is how people treat other companies, do they berate the staff at the supermarket over the price of carrots? Or is it something they only have the nuts to do online 🤣
