    I miss wahiawa. That’s where I used to hang out in my growing up years and I went to leilehua high school. The weather was perfect. It is a nice smaller town.

    Mahalo for this video. I was born and raised in Wahiawa, up the ‘heights’ on Nakeke Place. Fished a lot at Lake Wilson, bought comic books at the bus station, went to the newly constructed Iliahi Elementary School, and went to Leilehua during my freshman year. My best friends were Japanese, Hawaiian, Filipino, and haloes-military brats. Million bucks a house? Auwe!

      Awesome history. Been wanting to go to Oahu for decades. From Indiana. Cooler Wahiawa weather sleep better like I do in Winter here in Indy.

    Kilani Bakery has the best brownies (no nuts). I ate a bunch of those growing up in Wahiawa. One day I will make my way back home to retire (at least part time). When you went to your grandma's house, I recognized the area. I grew up not too far from there (behind Foodland). My parents still live in the same house. I bet if your family went to Dr. Honda (dentist), you know my aunty (she was the hygienist there). I went to Kaala too! The weahert in Wahiawa is like the weather here in Seattle. Mahalo for featuring my hometown. 🙂

    Kaala was my elementary school. I wasn’t a bully but I saw my friends being bullied. I did not hesitate to wave my hand 🤚 and make them bullies turn around. 😂 Looking at those bullies today, most have not accomplished anything in life. Looks like you and I have accomplished much. So a word of wisdom to bullies. It’s not worth being a bully in this life. Love Aloha!

    I grew up in Wahiawa from 02-2013. For anyone deciding to move to Wahiawa with kids, just know that kids from Wahiawa are prideful & territorial. Specifically older Elementary/Intermediate aged kids (they usually mature from that phase in HS and stick to their own cliques). Most kids there grow up fast so they're not always friendly in the beginning, and can be real sensitive to sarcasm & stares if they don't know you. 'Sensitive' as in they'd wanna fight or verbally attack you. Lol that goes for both boys & girls. But your kids will see their peers dirt biking, chasing roosters around town and catching them for sport 🐓 , walking around with a wild pig they just hunted, maybe a fight here and there & may even see their peers doing drugs out in the open from time to time unfortunately. My advice is to teach your kids to mind their own business, don't stare at folks & really just be as respectful as they can be when around locals. It's just a different culture in these smaller towns like Wahiawa. You just have to give respect to get it, if you're new in town.
    Finding their group of friends through arts, clubs or sports will make life A LOT easier. 👍🏼 It can be intimidating in the beginning but it gets better! I've lived in Japan, SoCal, NY & the PNW, but Wahiawa is home💚 Once you're in with the locals, you're family. It's really an "everyone knows everyone" type of town. Just be patient, keep an open mind & be a good neighbor.

    Born and raised in Wahiawa. Went down memory lane with you. Only town that you go in/out with bridges going over Lake Wilson. Leilehua High School..Mules mascot in recognition of Schofield Army. California Ave is named after a bunch of California early investors that wanted to buy all the property. Some of the very best Korean Food.

    I love wahiawa. There was a kinda fancy restaurant there called III coins had a big ol' plastic bull out front in the late 70's. I remember going to Wahiawa intermediate school and the last day of school was Kill Haole day, George my neighbor was my life insurance that day!

    LOL...Was watching your Wahiawa video, wondering where you were filming. Cut to Gramma's house & had a good chuckle...coz my residence is at that condo complex!-hahaha. About eateries, haven't tried El Palenque yet(weird hours of operation), Taqueria is XLNT & Mex #3 is Barrio Cafe, next door to Kilani Bakery. Cannot do Wahiawa video w/out mentioning Shige's Saimin Stand, Seoul Food Kitchen & Tanya's Grill & Pies, imo. Tho born/raised Haleiwa/Waialua, Wahiawa is my home since 1984

    We lived in Waipahu and Wahiawa in the mid-70s. Yes, single wall homes are cold in the winter - I had an electric blanket! We were married at the Wahiawa Botanical Gardens and had our reception in our carport. I worked at Wahiawa General and our house was right across the street on Lehua, so that was very convenient. The house was a small plantation type, but the yard had an orchid hedge out front and birds of paradise and banana trees, it was beautiful - unfortunately, got torn down at some point and now there's a big double story there, probably multigenerational, judging from all the vehicle parked around. Much quieter back then, lots of sugar cane and pineapple fields. Quick trip to the north shore was a real plus. We used to go watch polo games at Mokuleia - free entertainment. Pakalolo - one of the Hawaiian words I still use sometimes. Good memories.

    California Ave was named because of the C&H Sugar. A lot of the street names are names of the families that lived there during the sugar plantation days, and from what my elementary school said, California Ave is named because they were all from California

    Sadly, many homes are being bought from outsiders instead of locals. It's no wonder many locals are being priced out of Hawaii because social media such as CZcams advertises Hawaii, so many outsiders with Big Money come in and buy everything. They are driving up the cost of living even more. My mom's next-door neighbors from California moved in this past year, and whoa! there is no more street parking as they have 5 cars, they let their dog shit on the grass and don't even pick it up. It is so upsetting, that these rich outsiders come here in droves and drive out the Kamaaina's. I hope in the end those selling Hawaii to outsiders, kicking out the locals truly get their Karma for screwing us over putting us either on the streets or sending us out of Hawaii...All in the name of money and greed.

      That is happening everywhere. Even small lake towns in New England have seen prices triple in the last 5-10 years. Sad thing is, we go to the lake every summer and half the houses are empty because the owners don’t rent anymore. It’s getting harder to both buy and to rent.

    • @dwellhawaii
      @dwellhawaii  Před 3 měsíci +4

      Keep in mind, a real estate agent has nothing to sell. You can only sell what you own. You can, however, hire a real estate agent to advertise your property and to make sure your interests are protected by a contract. It is ultimately the homeowner/seller that decides when to sell their home, how much to sell their home for, and WHO they sell their home to. We are staunch advocates of local homeownership and more so, advocates of HOLDING your real estate. It is a daily conversation to empower locals to position themselves for ownership. In the absence of any legislation barring foreign investment, local homeownership is the ONLY hardened defense against it.
