The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

No one can ever accuse Sullivan of keeping people of color off his show..He knew talent when he saw or heard it..Over the years he had hundreds of performances by people of color on his show..
such a powerful voice, first time I’ve ever seen her live this is awesome
Same here.

Same here what a great singer
Years later , Lavern Baker teamed up with Jackie Wilson to record a steamy version of "THINK TWICE" on the Brunswick label .
She's pretty !!!
She could tell a story with her eyes alone.
She was really good! Not only her singing, but also the deliverance of the song. I'd never seen her live before.
The performance 🎭

Her voice transcends my consciousness. Damn! She's good!
So great! One of the songs that jump started R&R. It was just a few tweaks to the earlier R&B that got the kids up and dancing. Lavern and Ruth Brown never got the fame they deserved.
not true
The former yes, the latter not so much.
For sure just found her music.
So true but they both challenged the system lavern went after. Georgia Gibbs when she covered tweedle dee and had a bigger hit when most black artists took that kind of thing in stride Lavern challenged cover records in Congress and Ruth years later fought for black artists to get the royalties they were cheated out of Bobby Darin who loved black people told Ruth something was fishy somehow he got a look at the books
Ruth was able to get some of the royalty money for herself and others from record sales in Europe which were not under the american contract Ruth made so much money for Atlantic records it was known as the house that Ruth built
I love both of these ladies not just for there amazing talent but also for standing up for themselves and others
I can't love this enough. Wonderful song, great performance. Thank you, Uncle Buck!
@bigdancd
LaVern Baker was one of the first Rock stars I saw live in concert back in May,1956 at U.D. Fieldhouse, Dayton OH when I was a freshman in high school. Also on the bill was Clyde McPhatter, Big Joe Turner, The Platters, Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers, Bill Haley and The Comets, The Drifters, Bo Diddley, and Red Prysock and his orchestra. I was backstage right before LaVern was due to go on stage. I was so thrilled to be there since it was my first live Rock concert. I talked to LaVern about what her songs were and she said watch me from back here. She was awesome and when she came off stage and stopped to talk to me before she went in the dressing room, she said; "how as that Danny Boy" and I almost hit the floor that she took time to speak to me again. I loved her from then and through her entire career.
When you hear this song, you have to smile😊 to me it sounds a little bit like Blues meets Ragtime meets rock and roll. I don't know what genre is supposed to be in, but if they made a genre of fun songs, this would be on the top of the playlist!😅
One of the best early pioneer vocalistsof rock & roll
My grandmother loves her.
I was 10 years old and loved this song when it came out.. Pretty early rock and roll.
Awesome!! If you have any more of her performances please share them. I always liked her and Ruth Brown and sadly they weren’t seen much on television in the 1950s. Ed Sullivan was way ahead of his time in that he didn’t care about a persons race and showing them on television 👍
man if it wasn't for him blacks would have never been seen on tv.

My uncle Bob Dynal told me to go a check out this lady he said she was a very fine singer with truckloads of talent and personality, Thanks until Bob
Heard her for the first time on Amazon movie fallout episode 3 and it's the style of music I've been looking for .
The singers from this era did not paid their worth are to their Survivors, not even the Notoriety they accomplish. 🥰😘♥️✌🏽🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Real music ! Will never be matched
We need a movie on her like ASAP wow 🤩 awesome 👏
This song was also on Uncle Buck with John Candy. What a great movie.
I ❤️❤️❤️ Lavern, first time seeing her live

@Linda Hines Linda Hines, taking your question at face value, LaVern Baker was a Rhythm and Blues-rooted singer whose three best known songs- Tweedle Dee, Jim Dandy and I Cried A Tear- all were Top Twenty songs on Billboard Magazine's Pop Charts in the late 1950s. Those recordings were all on the Atlantic label. Elvis Presley often covered "Tweedle Dee" in his early live performances. LaVern Baker was the second female inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Pioneer of rock and roll
I don't know a lot about Ed Sullivan but so many great acts seem to have been on his show even some who caused social outrage at this time, I could be wrong but he seems a rebel and a pioneer, but perhaps I am wrong?.
Ed followed his own instincts, the show's bookers and the money
I like the oldies and I remember hearing this in the oldies stations in NY like WCBS FM. But now, in my 60s, I listen and say.. what in the world does this song mean? Lyrics make no sense... hehe
Another one I haven't heard in years!
Just heard this on Boom Light had to CZcams it 😍
I'm as happy as can be I found this Song!
nice
I love her dress.
She was so good.
I've always thought that this was a fun song, and it was a really big seller for LaVern Baker. One of rock and roll's earliest big hits. This was from the same episode that also featured Bo Diddley and the Five Keys. It must have been one of the very first instances of rock and roll being featured on television.
Of course, Bill Haley was on 3 months before in August. It's an interesting question though. Didn't the Crewcuts do Sh-Boom in '54? Is that considered R&R?
@@MostlyBrenda Yes, they did! I would love to see the footage of the Crew Cuts on here!
she built the house of atlantic records before aretha!
She had such a great voice
Still a powerhouse!
The Platters and Bo Diddley should be here in this channel.
LOVE Platters
From the same 1955 episode that was also Bo Diddley's first and LAST Sullivan Show appearance.
"Far out" 🎶🎶😋🦧
True History 🎵🎶💯👍😎🇺🇸
Damn this woman was gorgeous.
Thanks for posting this 😃
Gotta sing this one at karaoke tonight! (Sunday, 11/6/22)
DANKE 🥀🕊🌝
She got it! She's got the stage presence, the dynamism. She could have done a bit better with a better song, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.
Could you please post from this same evening's show 11/20/1955 Willis "Gatortail "Jackson's tenor sax man's performance.

Lavern Baker Recorded this R&B Novelty Song in Late 1954, In January 1955 her Song reached #4 on the R&B and #14 on the Pop Chart. Georgia Gibbs had more success with the song reaching #2 on the Pop Chart.
In February 1984, -29 years being unreleased a rare Live cover by Elvis Presley from 30 April 1955 was released on his “First Live Recordings” Album. Elvis Never recorded “Tweedle Dee” in a studio nor did he release it as a single or on an album in his lifetime. It was a popular song as there was around 9 versions previously recorded before Elvis did his live version.
LaVern Baker, the first Black artist to file a legal grievance against white artists who produced pop covers of their hits.
Delores LaVern Baker (November 11, 1929 - March 10, 1997) was an American rhythm and blues singer, who had several hit records on the pop chart in the 1950s and early 1960s. Her most successful records were "Tweedlee Dee" (1955), "Jim Dandy" (1956), and "I Cried a Tear" (1958).
Baker was born in Chicago, Illinois. She is occasionally referred to as Delores Williams because of an early marriage to Eugene Williams; in the late 1940s she was identified in RCA Victor record company files as "D. L. McMurley." She was the niece of blues singer Merline Johnson and was also related to Memphis Minnie.
She began singing in Chicago clubs such as the Club DeLisa around 1946, often billed as Little Miss Sharecropper, and first recorded under that name in 1949. She changed her name briefly to Bea Baker when recording for Okeh Records in 1951, and then became LaVern Baker when singing with Todd Rhodes and his band in 1952.
In 1953 she signed for Atlantic Records as a solo artist, her first release being "Soul on Fire". Her first hit came in early 1955, with the Latin-tempo "Tweedlee Dee" reaching #4 on the R&B chart and #14 on the national US pop charts. Georgia Gibbs' note-for-note cover of Baker's "Tweedle Dee" reached #1; subsequently Baker made an unsuccessful attempt to sue her and petitioned Congress to consider such covers copyright violations
LaVern Baker died from cardiovascular disease on March 10, 1997, at the age of 67. She was originally buried in an unmarked plot in Maple Grove Cemetery in Kew Gardens, Queens, New York, but her grave received a headstone on May 4, 2008, after a fundraiser was held by local historians.
one of tina turner's favourite songs :)
Tweedle dee dee, tweedle dee dee
Tweedle dee dee, tweedle dee dee
Tweedle tweedle tweedle dee
I’m as happy as can be
Jimminy cricket, jimminy Jack
You make my heart go clickety-clack
Tweedle tweedle tweedle dee
Tweedle tweedle tweedle dot
How you gonna keep that honey you got
Hunkies hunkies fish that bite
I’m gonna see my honey tonight
Tweedle tweedle tweedle dot
Tweedle dum tweedle dum
Give it up give it up
Give your love to me
Tweedle dot, tweedle dot
Gimme gimme gimme gimme
Gimme all the love you got
Tweedle tweedle tweedle dum
I’m a lucky so-and-so
Mercy, mercy, pudding pie
Hubba hubba honey do
I’m gonna keep my eyes on you
Tweedle tweedle tweedle dum
Tweedle dum, tweedle dum
Give that kiss to me before you go
Tweedle dum, tweedle dum
Lookie lookie lookie
Look at that sugar plum
Tweedle dee tweedle dum
You’re as sweet as bubble gum
Mercy, mercy, pudding pie
You got something that money can’t buy
Tweedle tweedle tweedle dum

Pov: Ritchie valens Buy house for your mom
Unfortunately this song was covered by a white artist Georgia Gibbs that went to number one. So much the Lavern Baker sent her insurance policy saying "You done stole eveything else I thought you will want THIS!!"
.
I'm white and this is way before my time, but I look back at the great music that colored people produced and the great performances they put on and think they deserved a lot more than they got. The opposite is often true today IMO. I really love all music that black people produced in the 50s and 60s. It's too bad that there were so many shady characters in management.
