Stand as still as you can with the spear, and your aim and damage will increase as well as possible crit damage. Also, Improvised weapons are shit. Have you looked up the zomboid map, to check your location, and form a game plan? That really helps. I normally try to figure out my goals, and know the general direction to where I can scavenge what I need.
