Rock music has been all over the world since the beginning of rock music, with every possible genre. Just, so you don’t have to be surprised to find o it their is “western” music in literally every country. But, one does not know what one does not know. So nows your chance to learn :). You can look into the history of rock and metal in Japan, China, Australia, Africa, Korea, Thailand, Utah, Polynesian islands, all over the world and for decades and decades. This was an instrumental.....wait til you hear our Queen...Saiki and our little Miku ( vocals / Rhythm Gtr sing. Welcome aboard, it would Behoove you ( just wanted to use that word LOL ) it would behoove you to continue with Band-Maid.
I'm a 56 yr old 80's metal Guitarist/ Bassist that played many a live gig in the clubs, who's favorite bands were Iron Maiden, early Def Lep, Queensryche, Dokken, Ozzy, Ratt,.skid row (seb's vocals)...I wont say solely, but pretty much for the GUITARISTS. Any hard rock, Metal band with a great lead guitarist ....Ratt...Warren DiMartini for instance) Band-Maid fills all of my needs. 5 petite, humble, easy on the eyes FANTASTIC MUSICIANS. All 5 individually are amazing Miku, is the exception, she couldn't even play when they started but now is a rock solid rhythm Gtr, shes the driving force and assembled a band that rivals any upon the Earth..... and her vocals mesh with Saiki's lead vocals....its like their 2 voices form a single instrument.

Yeah, Band-Maid is a hard rock band that can out-metal, out-punk and out-pop most other bands. Different songs will have different flavors of prog, funk, blues, what have you. Check out Different, Warning and Rinne for three different flavors of craziness. Then some more live stuff with Domination and Manners/Black Hole.

The competition between the bands in Japan is fierce so musicians must be incredibly good to be seen. When it comes to BAND-MAID, you've stumbled across a gold mine. All 5 girls are extremely tallented, something you will notice if you continue. The best part is that they do everything in their own way and every song you listen to will be different. They're simply amazing! One thing worth mention: They are a live band! Their brutal skill will really be seen there.
I suggest you spend the next half year just listening to Japanese bands. Then you have just skimmed the surface and realized that there are an infinite number of bands that are good.

Kanami Tōno (遠乃 歌波) - lead guitar, backing vocals, main music composer.

I would suggestion Domination (Live), Cross (Live), Rinne (MV), Daydreaming (MV-power ballad), and/or Freedom (live-drum solo). Have a good one.

Yes they sure do sing- they have an amazing lead singer- and amazing 2nd vocals (who was on stage here since she is also rythmn guitar) you just happened to start with one of their like 3 instrumentals out of like the 120 odd songs they have :) That they apparently made so the singer can get a break during their concerts :) Onset isnt even on an album! They do also have about another half a dozen songs they have done instrumental versions of too- but normally yeah Saiki is an amazing singer!
And as you just saw- Band-maid are absolutely the real deal not any kind of gimmick- their maid outfits are part of their imagine, in the same way kisses makeup is, and to make a point - but not a gimmick in the sense of thats all they are.
you'd be amazed how many old time rockers totally love them and rate them as the best or one of the best rock bands in the world :) And they also have some of the best musicians going - especially the bassist and drummer :)
They formed themselves 8yr ago and did they whole tiny gigs thing and got better and better- they write their own stuff and are not in any way a studio made band. Their songs have a lot of different styles and influences- though they are a rock band, some songs have obvious punk or metal or pop elements. And they all go above and beyond what they need to in their songs.
Dunno if you are a musician but musicians tend to totally love band maid too for the instrumental complexity and depth they have.

This is what I consider to be a cultivated conversation among instruments in the most universal and beautiful language in the world that everyone understands. You just have to listen. :)
And yes, this band also includes a fifth member. A vocalist from which you won't hear any screams or deep growls, but who is perfectly fitting for this kind of music.
The individual talent of each of these ladies is already amazing, but what they create together makes even the biggest names of the last years/decades look pretty bad, imo. THE best Rock band on Earth. Two members (MISA - Bass, Akane - Drums) are classically trained musicians who studied at the Tokyo Academy of Music while Kanami, the lead guitarist, has also been playing piano since the age of 3 or 4 but is concert standard (almost unbelievably, given her skills, she only switched to guitar about 10 years ago!) They all have superb musical ability as well as passion, a lack of ego and the drive to play real, in your face, Rock which is why they are THE best live Rock band on Earth right now. The only band I've seen that is playing live like bands I went to see in the 70's, such as Led Zeppelin or Sabbath or Zappa. Music they write themselves, real guitars, drums and bass played loudly and with passion as well as powerful Rock vocals. They are all really close friends and know how to have fun together on stage, confident as they are in each others’ abilities and skills. They've revived the classic Rock sound and given the genre a much needed kick in the ass, as Babymetal have done for Metal. Future reactions I'd recommend, as they really shine brightest live, would be from the DVD they released in April 2020. The Tokyo School of Music is a vocational school. So it’s not like Berkeley or that level.
You don’t have to go to a prestigious music school to be classically trained. Mincho was classically trained on piano from age three and continues to this day.
MISA also began piano training from 3-4 years old. She stopped in middle or high school, but she and Akane moved to wind ensemble in middle/ high school.
Akane played trombone and MISA played horn and trumpet.

Congratulations on finding the best hard rock band in the world. Don't worry about what genre they're in though, although hard rock is their self proclaimed genre and indeed what I'd call them if I had to pick just one, but they veer all over the musical spectrum and they're very full of surprises. You haven't really heard them until you've heard a bunch of their songs, because they can be so different than each other. Songwriting prowess if off the hook awesome, and well.. you heard how good they are. Yes - they have vocals. You just happened to pick an instrumental song. The ice queen goddess with the best rock voice in the universe today, Saiki Atsume - and great backup vocals on many songs by band founder and rhythm guitarist Miku Kobato. Drummer Akane Hirose and MISA the bassist are f'ing unbelievably great - and then there's the mild mannered Kanami Tono who turns into a beast when you put a guitar in her hand (and is a genius songwriter). They have songs that veer toward speed metal, slow to mid tempo hard groove rock songs, proggy songs, beautiful ballads, and songs that have all of this in them and more. They tend to write music in a way that you never really know what's coming next - not just always verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge, etc. I haven't even looked at what songs the other commenters have suggested, but they are all correct. (BM doesn't have any bad songs). It's criminal (really criminal) that the entire world does not know this band. Yes, most of their lyrics are Japanese but who gives a crap; just pretend Saiki's voice is another instrument because she sounds that good. They also work their butts off and crank out music like crazy. Soon, you too may very well become a Maidiac.

Cool reaction! Onset is a really good instrumental, like you said, very groovy, catchy, upbeat, really great. BAND-MAID is currently my favorite band. What I like about them is their stylistic diversity, they are often hard rock/power pop based, but they incorporate influences from metal, punk, funk, blues and jazz. Their songs can be very fast, or very heavy, sometimes just pure fun or more emotional, etc, with always focus on catchy melodies and a very balanced songwriting, not always guitar centered with lot of room for the bass and drums to shine. Their music get accented differently in every song.
The thing about their outfits is because their rhythm guitarist, Miku Kobato, worked in a maid café in Tokyo (which are very popular, especially among tourists) and she wanted to create a band with maid outfits (culturally associated with a more friendly, cute and submissive behavior) with rock music (associated to badass attitude), to create what she calls "the gap", in other words, a mental dissonance between what you see and what you listen.
I really suggest you to dig more into them, they have really great songs. Check out these songs:

    Warning!: czcams.com/video/9yD3IqrLtPk/video.html
    No God: czcams.com/video/nAdWnIRjGak/video.html
And, about japanese rock, I think Japan has a really amazing bands that sadly have been criminally overlooked in the west. I've been listening to japanese bands from about 20 years ago and I really think Japan has one of the greatest rock scenes in the world. Obviously, like everywhere, there're many types of bands, multiple styles, all depends on what fills your taste. But, although there's a lot of bands, in general they have some kind of idiosincracy when making music, so the more you listen to them, the more you'll be able to recognize those elements (chord progressions, song structures) that are unmistakable japanese (the same happens to me when I listen to american pop music, the way they do things is clearly USA pop). Also there are some bands kind of gimmicky, but try not to let that divert your attention from the most important thing, which is music and there's a lot of really awesome musicians. Costumes or outfits are just part of the package.

Time to start the journey. They're gonna surprise you with so many different styles of their hard rock sound, yet it's always well written. I'll let others fill in the details, but one thing I wanted to point out is that the lead guitarist, Kanami, does the lion's share of the songwriting. Rhythm guitar Miku writes almost all they lyrics. There's no wrong way to go now. They can hit you with a classic rock sound, a modern pop/punk sound, and even some progressive sounds. They do it all and dip in and out of genres even within a song, but they're usually always tied together by great hooks and choruses so that every song is enjoyable at a surface level too. There's too many to suggest, but one of my favorite songs is Blooming. You could go to just about any on their CZcams channel and not go wrong.

FROM JAPAN ◆ Thank you for your reaction to BAND-MAID.
BAND MAID is celebrating its 9th year of formation. BAND was formed by a girl who came to Tokyo from a local city of Japan to become a singer when she was about 19 years old. Five unique and talented girls gathered. The members have not changed, and they are continuing their efforts to improve their playing ability. They are constantly writing new songs and cool songs. Three new songs were released at the end of October.
BAND MAID is a hard rock band, but it's a very diverse band. Listen to different types of songs.
1 Thrill : The first music video that saved them from dissolution. Classic rock 2014
2 Sense : The theme song of the anime "Platinum End". Dramatic, fast hard rock with a classic intro. 2021.10
3 Bubble : A tribute to the movie Bohemian Rhapsody, funky rock
4 Different : First anime opening song, new sense of high-speed rock. Anime is Log Horizon 3rd season. 2020.12
5 Daydreaming : Beautiful power ballad. Saiki and Kobato vocals and Kanami's guitar solo are wonderful.
6 Dice : Rhythmic hard rock singing women's independence
7 about us : A gift for fans who cannot meet in a pandemic. Beautiful ballad. 2021.02
8 Freedom : A power rock that walks around the stage and conveys a smile.
The transition from drum solo to lead guitar is the best.
9 Manners : Declaration to create new hard rock while inheriting classic rock. Cool hard rock. Rock'n'Roll never die.
10 alone : The song they wrote, composed and released for the first time. Medium speed Hard Rock 2016
11 Secret My Lips & Secret Maiko Lips : Funky Hard Rock. A gift for fans of April Fool's Day .
12 Blooming : Vocals and chorus are impressive, and various types of music are fused.
13 RINNE : High-speed rhythmic heavy rock, inspired by the Japanese horror movie "RINNE : Reincarnation".
RINNE (Reincarnation) is also found in Eastern thought and Buddhist thought.
14 onset : Instrumental song for lead singer Saiki breaks, their great playing power and harmony.
15 Play : A song composed as an instrumental song, but Miku added lyrics as Saiki liked it. With different intros depending on the live.
16 Before Yesterday : Record of the first overseas performance, Sakura-Con in Seattle 2016. Melodic Rock with great lyrics.
17 Choose me : An insert song of the concert scene the Netflix movie KATE, they appeared as BAND MAID. Cool rock song.
18 Dragon Cry : The only song produced by Tony Visconti.
It's not their lyrics, but it sings about the future of human society and the earth. Great Heavy Classic Rock .
19 After Life : A homage to the maid cafe and band formation where Kobato worked. BAND-MAID Hard Rock .
20 Corallium : The song that Saiki wrote all the lyrics for the first time. Hip pop style dancing hard rock.

Great reaction to an unusual choice of introductory videos to Band-Maid. Not often that a first-timer starts off with "Onset". I'm guessing whomever recommended you start with that masterpiece composition knew something about your preferences.
Yes, that band has a fifth member, a lead singer whom was not on stage during "Onset". And she does not scream into mics. If you're looking for screaming, sorry, but this is Band-Maid. Heavy metal is down the hallway occupying in a different office altogether. As you mentioned, Band-Maid is different. If you want to hear melodic lead singing and fun vocal harmonies, then relax, you came to the right place. :)
For your next Band-Maid videos, I strongly recommend songs with vocals, such as the official live "Play" and "Domination", and since you're a drummer, the official live "Freedom" features a drum solo.

Oh, yeah, they sing alright!! They have an incredibly gifted lead singer in Saiki! And then, unlike pretty much any other band, they have a second singer!! That’s right, two for the price of one! The rhythm guitarist, Miku, is an amazing singer in her own right. She and Saiki sing lots of harmonies or Miku sings great backing vocals. In order to give Saiki’s vocals a rest during their live shows (servings), they write roughly one song per album where Miku sings solo. How cool is that!!! 🔥🔥🔥😎🤘🏼

That was a great reaction to watch. Especially with the prelude of cynicism transitioning to excitement! haha. Once you said you were a Drummer who has performed live, I thought, OMG, this guy is in for a treat. Drummers and other musicians especially love this band it seems.

Thank you! It's true as a drummer I kept listening to her beats and they were just incredible to hear especially how well it complimented the rest of the band! I created a video called Who am i on my channel that introduces myself and I talk about my experiences as a musician.

Puzzle is one of my favourites at the moment, Kanami pretty much solos all through the song and brings a bit of Angus Young and The Edge into her work on that one amongst other things. Also Turn me on which some people reckon has Metallica or Iron Maiden vibes, I'd go further back and say it's more Deep Purple/Black Sabbath feelings which would make a bit of sense as Deep Purple is a stated influence of theirs. Onset is fantastic but the full impact of BM comes out when Saiki is singing, takes it to another level. Oh and whenever you can find a live version, that's the way to go because they are in their element live.

Check out "Hanabie-We love sweets" or "Nemophila-Dissension" for more japanese metal. Band Maid is more hard rock but it's top notch.

LMAO....Another One Bites The Dust!!! I love watching people hearing them for the first time...Band-Maid is ALL genres rolled up into one...They don't have a bad song or even an average song...Everything they play is GREAT!!! They are Band-Maid & we are Maidiacs!!!

It's called "Onset" because they play it when the lead singer experiences the "onset" of needing to take a whiz.

Best F..cking ROCK BAND ON THE PLANET! (Bar None) (and i'm from the UK :) Weaned on Sabbath / Pink Floyd in the late 60's. Japan is the best Country to find new Hard Rock/Metal, or anything really! Next.... Groupwise Too many to list. Lovebites(Power Metal, toured with Dragonforce over here), Nemophila (err Gosh), Unlucky Morpheus, Gacharic Spin (A bit weird for a Heavy Metal dude but cannot find a fault for their musical GENIUS, unt so entertaining , Dol$$boxx ... stop there's to many. Make your own journey. But you won't ever waste your time and I've never had a dull moment. The blokes are good as well but the plethora of all Female rock groups is down to the Education system in Japan where boys choose sports and women choose artsy stuff i.e Music for their extra "credits". Oh and by the way this was obviously, as you pointed out, an instrumental and when you hear Saiki (lead singer) you will fall head over heels :) 😁

F**k yes is right. The proverbial "just the tip of the iceberg" and "you ain't seen nothing yet". The fact is Band-Maid is unique, melodic, creative, dynamic, powerful and FUN. The best rhythm section you may ever hear in ROCK. Wait for the vocal/harmonies. Top notch stuff. I've waited over 40 years for a band to capture my musical soul and here they are. Try DOMINATION-LIVE for the full effect to hit you. Then it will just take off from there. Literally anything you choose from their YT channel will be a blast. If I had to guess you already have listened ahead. No fear they have an amazing 100+ song catalog to keep you busy. You will quickly be screaming that BAND-MAID is Awesome. Peace.
