Nice to see a review that doesn't spend the bulk of the time warning us not to do self-cleaning. If the feature were as perilous as some folks describe it, then I'd think GE would have been class-actioned into removing it.
We grew up cleaning our own ovens and I continued as I got older. Although I have a self cleaning oven, I still clean it by hand. I’m in my 40’s and have RA and said, “I wonder how this works”?. Went straight to CZcams. I know, I know read the manual :). Thank you for your help!
Great video - as a bird owner I particularly appreciated that you pointed out how important it is to keep pets away. Maybe now I'll get over that inexplicable fear of messing up my oven and actually get it all the way clean!
Unfortunately had some foil burnt onto the bottom of my self-cleaning oven - I tried baking soda - that didn't work. So I turned on the self-clean feature - which I think permanently burned it into the oven base. Any ideas on how I can get this off? Also - the "forever drip marks" between oven windows - any ideas on how to remove those?

Great job Malissa! I couldn't find manual after 5-6 years and you answered alot of questions ,and even included a warning for pets You can't help it if your hot as a self cleaning oven so others get over it,this was better than seeing a service repairman !

One word of caution: do not use the self-cleaning feature if you have an under-counter oven and granite countertops. I actually broke my oven (a week before Thanksgiving) because it got too hot during the self-cleaning cycle (the repairman explained that the stone countertop held in the heat and caused the thermostat to blow).

Whirlpool self cleaning oven I don't have the owners manual..... where should I look for the model number on the appliance? I don't know where to find that either...... I know it sounds really silly but it's not my oven LOL

You are so right I used to much water with baking soda and have a drip for life but good tip I’m trying to google how to self clean my oven but the info about racks was super useful.

I keep the big bits off the bottom of my oven by using a non-stick oven liner across a rack on the lowest rack level which I never use anyway. It can withstand pretty high baking temps and is easy to remove and clean. If you had a major spill or blowup stuff would get past it but that hasn't been the case for me. The bottom of my oven still looks great. Obviously take it out before self-cleaning!

Self-cleaning ovens that use pyrolytic cleaning (heat) create a lot of smoke and odor. It’s also a feature notorious for malfunctioning. (Do search before trying it out!!)
I got one of those scrapers for Christmas. I was like my mother really likes to throw away her money wth am I going to use this for? so far I have used it to scrape ice from car windows, gum from floor, paint from table top and now I can uses on thanksgiving food from oven! speaking of thanksgiving I almost self cleaned my turkey in my oven. this video really helped now I understand how that setting works. thanks

I got mine used from my landlord so I have no clue. Should I assume the coating is gone and just clean it normally?
That's something that I have researched intensely. What I have learned is that you need to take the door apart and if you do it yourself, you'll void your warranty. So of course, they want you to call a service professional over to do it for you (for a cost$).
I was admiring the rack in her video as well. Very well built piece of equipment.
A little tidbit: I have a self-cleaner about a decade or more old. It actually uses a manual locking lever, like what you'd find on a dishwasher.

Melissa the baking soda worked great on the glass after self cleaning. Cany you use baking soda on the over coating as well? The area around door doesn't come clean and the front of oven. So what can I use to clean it up a bit better. Thanks for the tip it worked beautifully.

What if you don't know if anyone else before you has scratched the pyrolytic surface? Would using the self-cleaning feature have a bad effect, or it just won't be as effective?

Melissa, many ppl are saying that the self cleaning program is ruining the stove and it won't work anymore having to replace it much faster. Actually happened to myself. After a self cleaning cycle my wall oven didn't work anymore and I had to buy a new onel. What's your opinion about this? Also I read somewhere that you cannot manually clean the ovens that have this feature but to only use the self cleaning program. Is it true?
I can, but I think the best way to do it is with a steam cleaner...it's more work to clean it without chemicals (which is the only way I'd do it).
I actually Googled the question about removing the racks before I even started, this my first time using an oven's self cleaning feature, and since it's an apartment, I don't want to damage my landlord's appliances. Common sense told me to ventilate the kitchen, so I currently have both windows open and a fan in one to exhaust air from the room
First time homeowner here. How often should you self-clean your oven? Once a month? Once a season? Whenever it looks dirty??
I no longer use the self cleaning function. Over time, the high temperature damages the control board. We had to replace our control panel twice on our previous gas range by Dacor. ($300-$500)Three different service companies told us not to use self cleaning…EVEN though the manufacturers say it’s ok.

I know I used the self-cleaning feature once (in 14 yrs!), but I can't remember if I hand--cleaned the inside of the oven between that time and now. What will happen to the film that manufacturer coats the inside of a self-cleaning oven if the oven has been damaged/partially removed before using the self-cleaning feature again?

As a part of my rental agreement for my Apartment, my Landlord is responsible for replacing my freestanding range/oven if something is wrong with it and he cant fix it.
Last week he brought me an older, used 30" Whirlpool WLP30800 range and it has a self cleaning function. My question is, my fridge is about a foot away from the oven (I have a small kitchen), would I still be ok to run the self cleaning cycle, or should I move the fridge further apart from the range?

If you *were* going to clean an oven by hand, what cleaners would you use? Would you recommend baking soda and dish soap? The oven is brand new and the oil splatter mess is new as well, I just want to get a handle on things before they get burnt on.
I have a question about the frame at the bottom of the oven door. Rust is forming along the top end of frame and over the years its been spreading. How can I fix that or what can I do to further prevent it from spreading?
great video. I actually removed my oven door and unscrewed it apart, just so I could clean the window inside. It was a gross job... But, I can now see my food again - kids love that. As for the self cleaning oven... I am wondering, I heard you can put cast iron pans in the oven to shed off all the old stuff, so it will be like brand new. Do you know anything about this?

How do you clean the "forever drips" between the oven glass. I just got a new stove and a pot of water boiled over and it got between the glass. The stove is under warranty but it doesn't cover that. (go figure).
Remove door, lay on counter, wrap microfiber cloth soaked in vinegar water and wrung out on a yardstick and insert into the slits at the bottom. Rub it around on the glass to remove soil. Repeat with rag wrung out in water till glass sparkles!
My stove is almost 20 years old so not sure all doors have those slits.

I have the streaks on the inside glass of my self cleaning oven and want to know how to clean between the glass??
I have lines inside or between my ovens doors. I have watched you tube video to clean from the slot at the bottom. I have an opening but it’s not between the glass. Help!
I found the best way to clean those marks is to remove the oven door. Most stove doors have hinges on the sides and most will have a push mechanism. Once you remove it place the door on a table and unscrew the inner casing of the door. Most ovens will have 2 glass sheets. Clean those and dry. Screw the case back on and push hinges back. Yes it is a bit of a process and it will take 1 to 2 hours but your oven door will look brand new again i highly recommend having someone help you. Hope that was helpful
+Clean My Space I just bought a house and the oven was so scary!! I was tempted to throw it away. It's a old hot point from the late 70s but seems to work great! I used easy off last night and wiped most of it clean today. But now I am using the self clean feature, is this okay and safe to do?? I don't want to blow my house up.
