How to Hatch Expired Brine Shrimp in Room Temperature and Less Light. Can it be done? See how!!

  • In this episode I break all the rules that we have been told about hatching brine shrimp. Room temperature water, wrong salt low light conditions that are only on for 12 hours and using cysts that expired 2 years ago.
This is my first time ever attempting to hatch brine shrimp. I have everything stacked against me.
Sometimes you just have to figure out things for yourself.
I just love it when someone tells me I can't do something or it won't work. That just makes me want to prove them wrong.

Hi Chris! I am like you too and I like to test and try things directly. The hatching of artemia cysts depends on many factors, light, oxygenation, temperature and salinity. If we take nature as an example, these ancient crustaceans have survived environmental catastrophes for millennia and climate change that we have no idea.
They can hatch in even difficult conditions.

I had a brine shrimp hatchery going for MONTHS. What I learned is that too much aeration caused stress. I used very light aeration, no heater, and fed them with spirulina powder. They lasted for around 6 months and they bred as well. It was fun! I made sure not to let them get too crowded as well. Crowding will cause your culture to crash.
