    You forgot one of his quotes: "Son, I love you; however, you're sitting on my leg. Get off the bed."

    Sounds like a loving husband. At that point in one's life I doubt your work will ever be thought of. It will always be those close to you that occupy your mind.

    Furthermore, even if that conversation really did happen, does it matter? As I see it the discoveries we associate with Darwin aren't considered important because of Darwin's personal belief in them, but because they've been demonstrated by scientific evidence produced by many people, with methods we've deemed to be sound. Nothing against the man, but especially by that time I don't think Darwin was load bearing for natural selection.

      The kind of people who push the "Darwin recanted!" are also the kind of people for whom if the founder of *their* ... doctrine, lets say. Worldview? Anyway, if that person recanted, it would shatter their entire organization.
      It's just one more example of how Creationists and apologists will tar their opponents (usually more explicitly than this, this is rather implied rather than outright stated) with exactly their own foibles. See also: "Evolution/Atheism is a religion!" (said by highly religious people, as if religion were a bad thing), and also "Atheists don't want to put in the effort to understand the opposing viewpoints."

    "The truth hurts for awhile, a lie scars for life."
    You brought me to this;
    "Darwin's family tradition was nonconformist Unitarianism, while his father and grandfather were Freethinkers, and his baptism and boarding school were Church of England. When going to Cambridge to become an Anglican clergyman, he did not "in the least doubt the strict and literal truth of every word in the Bible"."
    He came from a longline of stewpot Religious sects and is perhaps the reason why he was so brilliant.
    We never know what the truth is anymore, it seems.
    💐Thanks for sharing.

    Even if Darwin did recanted his theories, I doubt he did, it doesn't invalidate them. Evolution stands on it's own.

    Even I knew about this one. No one actually there heard him say it, and it was years afterwards that it was claimed.
    However, I didn't know it was one specific person who claimed it. I though it was just a Creationist myth, not someone looking for notoriety.

    Absolutely bonkers to remember at 7am on a random Sunday that Darwin had a wife and children and didn't just spend the rest of his life on the Beagle with Fitszroy

    Being religious, the story of Darwin's alleged conversion is one that bugs me because it seems to be one of those stories which pushes the view that one cannot both hold the observable facts of the universe true and believe in the revalations given through scripture. This is a worldview that is equal parts bogus and dangerous. Vatican I spells it out pretty well, “Though faith is above reason, there can never be any real disagreement between faith and reason. The same God who reveals mysteries and infuses faith has bestowed the light of reason on the human mind. God cannot deny himself, nor can truth ever contradict truth.”
    That said, something tells me that the majority of those who refuse to accept evolution and do all they can to refute it would see the word 'Vatican' and think devil worship was afoot.
