    I think this captures the moment of the manga better. Hisayama ended the original chapter on the shot at 3:20 of the skull of Eren's new titan above Gabby. The moment is essentially the culmination of Eren's entire character arc and his ultimate moment of triumph in the series (I'd argue this is the best written moment in the whole manga, nothing feels as impactful as the rumbling.)
    Isayama allows the reader to enjoy Eren really defeating Zeke simply because he chose Ymir's humanity, wheras Zeke saw her as a Slave.
    He doesn't really allow you to absorb the full impact of how horrible the Rumbling is till the next chapter where you see the shot of Eren's face at the end.

    There’s no way people listen and watch this and think the song is cheery or hype. It’s a sad and empathetic song. The somber tone and soft buildup that plays as Eren breaks free of his chains and runs towards Ymir (the biggest victim in the AOT universe). Then it stops, Eren speaks and begins to show he cares. Giving hope to Ymir that there is someone out there that cares about her and that she doesn’t have to forsake her life for others. This moment represents that Eren is the freedom that Ymir has always yearned for and never knew until it finally hits her through a tear showing her humanity.
    she is NO GOD, NO SLAVE, she is a HUMAN BEING.

      Yea but the song literally used in the league cinematic shows the character being saved. It is obviously somber in the beginning, the pay off is the overcoming. Thoughts on this scene and usage of ost in general:
    this exercise in editing really let me appreciate the importance of music in conveying the intent and purpose of the characters.
    When I read the manga, my mind put a large emphasis on the fleeting relationship between eren and ymir, and my view was that eren approached ymir primarily with a sense of empathy for her plight as a slave of fritz. in that moment, the focus was on ymir's freedom, not really the rumbling. thus, i felt that the song showcased eren and ymir's empathy (i am doing this for freedom), and not their rage (i am doing this to kill my enemies).
    in contrast, the tv version focuses more on eren's rage. there is a certain amount of malevolance in the TV version due to the lack of music and the grim tone of the music when it eventually starts playing. Of course, this hits harder on the apocalyptic aspect, but i feel that it strips away the emotional momentun of the scene which was the relationship between eren and ymir (in my view). at the same time, the apocalyptic aspect of the rumbling could come later; after the commercial break we get a perspective of the sheer sense of destruction wrought by eren.

      @yesididitverywell Před 2 lety +51

      Well said man. Eren being the first person to actually recognize Ymir's plight after two thousand years of being used by others hit me so hard when I first read it.
      I liked the music and atmosphere when Eren transformed in the anime, but I feel like it really brought down the impact of that moment and made it seem like he was still just using her like everyone else. I don't know, it just felt underwhelming, especially in comparison to your edit here, thanks for making this.

      Tell me, if the Eren in the ending isn’t the ’true Eren’, why do they desire freedom?
      Because both of them are enslaved by something. And both of them desire freedom from that enslavement. That is the whole point of this scene.
      You’re right. This is the moment when they tried breaking down their chains. That is literally what happened here. And that’s not changed by the ending.
      This is when Ymir first tries to rebel against her enslaved existence. After this moment, she used the Paths to go back in time and set up the events that lead to Mikasa’s choice, where she chooses of her own free will to kill Eren, thereby proving to her that she could rebel against the toxic love that enslaved her, creating a closed loop. That’s how she succeeds in breaking her chains.
      Meanwhile, this is Eren’s final rebellion. This is the moment when Eren once again denies that he is enslaved by his own desire for freedom. This is when Eren tries to wipe out the entire world, even though he knows that Mikasa will kill him at 80%. Here, he chooses to deny the truth of his beloved ’freedom’ one last time, even though he knows he’ll fail. Because even that rebellion was simply one more link in the chains that enslave him to his desire to be free. Therefore, he fails to break his chains, whilst Ymir succeeds. That’s the whole point.
      There is nothing different about Eren in this scene and Eren in the ending. The only difference is that the Eren in the ending openly displays his sorrow over the truth of his enslaved existence, instead of trying to angrily deny it. You just didn’t like it because Eren was human in that moment, rather than a merciless chad that slept with Historia.
      Dude. You can quit it. The ending is good. That’s not just an opinion. That’s an objective fact. Opinion polls, rating websites and the most relevant anime reviewers on the Internet show that at least 90% of the fandom likes the ending. In entertainment, when you have that high amount of people liking an ending, then that means that that’s not just a good ending. Most would call that a perfect ending.

    Wonderful, I always read this chapter with Call of Silence because I had the same reasoning as you. I thought it was more emotional than anything when Eren talked with Ymir after 2000 years. I don't think MAPPA did anything wrong is just that this was my favourite chapter because of the development of Eren and the bond between these two characters. Both seeking for freedom even after 2000 years. Thanks for giving this direction it's more close to what I thought when I read chapter 122.

    • @harrenysk
      @harrenysk  Před 2 lety +16

      Right? After I read this part in the manga, it really seemed as if the series, for the past 122 chapters, truly was leading up to this singular moment. The ultimate reflection of Eren's character as someone who desires freedom. This desire would bleed over to helping people like Historia and Ymir, who suffer and are shackled through no fault of their own, trapped in walls created by tyrants. It's important that Eren has this empathy, because only then he is able to sympathise with the Warriors, and yet come to an understanding that not every problem in the world can be fixed.

  • @MooseA454
    @MooseA454 Před 2 lety +15

    This matches the feelings that I had when I first read this part. The kindness that Eren extended to Ymir and the fact that for the first time in her life someone offered a choice and the flow of emotions that she felt and expressed for the first time in 2000 years. The flashbacks really made the edit so much more and the weight of Ymir being free is really felt. I still wish that they didn't do part of Eren and Ymir's talk as a background thing when Zeke started to call to Ymir but that was a choice of the studio. Also I am interested to see if there is a way to break the music between when Ymir is free and when the Rumbling actually starts.

    It felt like this moment was basically glossed over in the original version. This feels like it has a much more fitting and appropriate emotional weight to it. Thanks for doing what you could to clean up one of my favorite moments in the whole manga, and for me, possibly the manga's most simultaneously beautiful and tragic moment. It's a shame that it's mostly downhill from here. At least once the anime is over, the disappointment train will finally reach its final station and I'll be able to forget about the ending.
