Winston and Julia rebel against Big Brother and the Party, in the name of private things. They fall in love, sort of. They have sex, an act forbidden by the Party. Family life too is something that could be a source for opposition to the Party. Winston has been keeping a diary too. All of these thing cultivate an independence from the Party's narrative.

I remember leftwing teachers, feminists, etc, teaching this book in school, because they imagined it to be describing some sort of future fascism or Nazism returned. Little did they realise it was describing themselves.
