  • Winston is tortured until he betrays Julia and loves Big Brother. The key to breaking him down is the physical deterioration and then the appeal to his greatest fears. Then he loses all self-respect and gives up pretense of independence. We conclude this lecture series with a discussion of how the fall of communism does not necessarily refute Orwell's view. A new, more effective managerial elite could do well what the communist party did badly, perhaps. There is reason to worry about this happening, perhaps, using the Party's own narrative as a standard for judging these matters.

Dr. Yenor, as always, does an incredible job of breaking down and explaining in detail the ideas of the author of this book. He confirmed much of what I thought and made me think of other things I had not yet thought of when I read the book. That is what a good teacher makes one do- think for oneself, question what one has thought and make one either to confirm one's own conclusions or come to a different conclusion based on one's rethinking.
