Our Licking River story is a special follow-up to our two-part series on Nonprofits & Water. We will take a journey on the 300+ mile long river accompanied by the words and voice of longtime Lexington Herald Leader journalist, Andy Mead. Along the way we will explore the history of the river, visit some of its unique points of interest and learn about its current environmental status. We will also learn about the non-profit organizations that help maintain and sustain it.

ORSANCO has a program called River Sweep with volunteer cleanups. Check with them and see if a group can be organised in your area.

I saw trash along the banks in Pendleton County back in the seventies. I hope they got it picked up and cleaned real nicely but there’s that doubt still. Small towns like Falmouth don’t have the resources to hire extra deputies for patrolling the river. I know this cause I grew up in Covington, Kentucky that the licking has had some bad floods in those little country towns.
Great video, it deserves more views. I kayak the Licking in the Falmouth to Butler area. The pollution is a real shame. Thanks for the history lesson and i hope more will get involved in keeping our waters clean .
I live close to the southernmost branch of the Licking River in Montgomery County and I I cannot believe the amount of trash to I see in the waterways around here. It's really sad, I wish the state of Kentucky would start a program to clean up the waterways and roadways. And to keep them clean.
