to be pedantic, outlawry is a type of conviction in a criminal system that placed you outside the law's protections. Thus all outlaws would be criminals, but not all criminals are outlaws.

My grandfathers brother was a worker there when he was young, around 45 years ago. 6 years ago, on a funeral a priest talked with my grandfather if his brother wanted to work for the cemetery but he said he has a grandson. Thats how i got the job. Its good money, and you really get to do something important.

This song has two meanings:
1. The Narrator is dead, with his soul singing for the grave digger to give his body a proper burial.
2. The Narrator is a deadringer. Back in the day, people who were assumed dead were buried, but a bell was put above their graves with a string drawn down to the grave. The graveyard shift worker would then dig the body up if the bell rang. The Narrator is pleading the grave digger to save his life from being buried alive. Presumably he was faking his death.

I have several thoughts on who the grave digger really is:
Maybe it’s literal, the grave digger is just that: a grave digger. Maybe the man is dying and he is giving his last wishes, to either pass from this world with the prayer of the last man to care for his body, maybe the only man too. Or to save his life for a second chance, to bury him another day.
Perhaps the grave digger is death himself, a reaper who has come to collect his soul. To either carry him to heaven or hell, “help me on my way, don’t let me die alone” “release me from this earth”, and the man is pleading mercy on his soul for the deeds he has done, ”forget what I have done, forgive me if you please”. He begs for escape from the reaper, “let me be the one who got away” to grow old and give him a chance to turn his life around before he collects “allow me to be saved” “slowly fill my grave”, or in other worlds, “take me slowly, give me more time”
Perhaps the grave digger is his executioner. The man responsible to take his life after being judged by the law, “bring me to my knee” “Rest these weary bones, send me on my way”. He pleads for him to save his life “forgive me if you can”, to aid in his escape “let me be the one who got away” “I pray it’s not too late”
I think the grave digger is an assassin of some kind. Charged with his execution and burial. He says “shallow grave” which suggests the burial is being done informally, in a rush.
I think of it as (due to the picture) an outlaw of some kind, finally facing his end. Whether that’s a betrayal of some kind or the police or his karma, i think he’s kinda giving his final wish to his executioner whether it god or fellow man
Im listening to this and all i see is Red Dead Redemption 2 the character slowly limping away from a gun fight most if not all of the gang are dead around then and they are just slowly trying to get away and right at the end they just collapse a bit away from the group.
I always thought of it as the person singing is a dead ringer. Someone who was presumed dead but they weren’t sure (this happened a long time ago) so they would put a bell on the grave with a string that leads to the coffin and if it range then the grave digger would dig him up.

This is my first time hearing this song. It has that feel of calm malice to it, the kind you would see when someone is calm on the outside but raging on the inside. I like it.

Triggers on single action revolvers are basically resting on the back of the triggerguard, the trigger is only the "regular position" (in the middle like other guns) when the gun is cocked. That means that buddy on the picture was shot before he could even cock his gun.

I just played two of these at once one slightly behind the other, one of the best things I've ever heard.
So, saw a lot of comments about the gun, how it has no trigger. It does, however it rests against guard until you pull the hammer back. Which means our friend here either got hit before he managed to fire off a shot, or fired off a shot, missed and got hit himself.
