One of the worst decisions made was decanonizing the Darth Plagueis novel. Reading how Palpatine was a vile, muderous, power hungry, sadistic, criminal mastermind even as a child makes him all the more bone chilling. Seeing how he murdered his parents, joined the Sith Order, manipulated his way to becoming a senator then Chancellor of the Republic. The fact that he was evil from the start, no tragic backstory, no manipulation and turn to the dark side by a dark lord like Vader, Sauron, etc. He's truly the SW version of the Devil. Makes Voldemort look tame.

At this point, there's enough allusions to the ancient Sith, Plagueis himself, the role he played in orchestrating Palpatine's rise, and what he taught his apprentice (especially powers over life and death - Lucas himself didn't want that, but both canon and legends decided to do it anyways) that the novel is basically canonized. Officially, Plagueis even still died around the same time as he did in Legends: sometime around TPM, after Maul had been taken and trained.

If you needed that lore destroyer junk TCW, then you aren't very bright.
Anakin didn't have one reason to be loyal to jedi. And yes jedi were plotting to take over in movie, they forced Anakin to spy on Palpatine, and when they should follow jedi rules, Mace windu war ready to broke them which showed Anakin sith and jedi are no different.
In movies was also obvious that Palpatine guided Anakin in ep2 as Anakin confirms "your guidance more than my patience"
TCW is trash for kids and it isn't part of movie canon nor it will ever be.

As a Sith Lord, he represented the threat most in the galaxy long considered a “myth”. He played off of this myth, using it to keep people afraid and on edge, concealing his true identity from the Republic and the Jedi, hiding in plain sight. For decades he was right under the Jedi’s noses, and they didn’t learn the truth until it was too late. He led the Republic, and the Confederacy, essentially fighting a war against himself, all as a pretense to weaken democracy and the Jedi. And once firmly ensconced as Emperor, he transformed the galaxy on an unbelievable scale in two short decades. Even after his first death, his legacy loomed large over the galaxy, and mere news of his return years after Endor very nearly destabilized the entire galaxy.
Darth Sidious is far and above the deadliest mastermind in all of Star Wars. No other villain manipulated events on the scale he did, or played so many elaborate schemes aimed at so many myriad objectives at once, often times maintaining multiple schemes with the same focus, several of those often being intended as contingencies. While most would play chess with pieces on a board, Sidious played chess with planetary systems, armies, and untold billions of lives.
All I can say is long live the Galactic Emperor!

In my opinion there are so many astonishingly well written monologues for Palpatine, monologues full of intelligence and irony, such as S4 Ep16 when Palpatine tells Anakin after Hardeen "killed" Obi-Wan "You cannot deny your feelings Anakin; they are what make you special"; S4 Ep18 (21:05) where Palpatine tells Anakin and Obi-Wan (disguised) "One shudders to think where the galaxy would be without the Jedi"; S6 Ep4 where after the whole inhibitor chip malfunction arc, Palpatine tells jedi master Windu and grandmaster Yoda "We can finally put this wretched situation behind us. We must direct our attention back to the war at hand. Each day we grow closer and closer to victory"; S6 Ep7 when Palpatine tells the senate after the whole Clovis & Banking Clan arc "During these treacherous times, we cannot in good conscience allow our money to fall under the manipulations of a madman, like Count Dooku or separatist control again" .But there is one scene that might slightly top all of these but it is in the same theme. S5 Ep20 (14:05) It is during Ahsoka's trial, when Palpatine says "I'm sure many of you look at this former jedi and think, surely she cannot be this murderer, or saboteur that they speak of, and yet (this is the best part) *think of all the times we have been fooled by the separatists and how they have infiltrated the republic* and ask yourself is this yet another separatist scheme? Another way to rip the jedi, and subsequently all of us, apart?" That is absolutely magnificent writing for Palpatine and I am so glad that these moments exist. They make even myself interested in politics.

George Lucas is clearly a student of history. Palpatine seems to be a well put together combination of Hitler, Stalin, Julius Caesar, Caesar Augustus, Caligula and Diocletian. George also seems to have mirrored historical events when writing about Palpatines plans, for example, Order 66 is an obvious copy of the Night of the Long Knives.
This is very effective, as it makes the events in an otherwise unrealistic fantasy land seem very plausible. The fans who criticised the prequels obviously knew Fuck all about the world around them to not see that

Ian is such a quality actor, you can see from his performance in Ep 1 that Palpatine is very believable, affable and charming as a regular up-and-coming politician - then as the PT goes on and the years pass he gradually becomes more and more consumed by the Dark Side and finds it harder to separate the behaviours, conversations and tells within his Chancellor role from his Darth Sidious persona. A Jedi Knight has to work to carefully master the Light Side of the Force, whereas a Sith Lord gives themselves to the Dark Side. Brilliant

Usually when characters look back like this they feel upset they have to leave someone behind or sorry for them that they are helpless. However, this is Sidious: a man with no qualms, boundaries or remorse. He doesn't feel sympathy or gratitude for the guard who sacrificed his life or regret for leaving him behind. He's just thankful it wasn't him that got destroyed. That selfless guard who did his duty as a trooper to the Republic sadly made a sacrifice in vain as he laid down his life for a Sith Lord who never cared for him, nor the many others he would subject to terror as Emperor.
