- Home built Diesel Motorcycle with Rat patina! Engine sound is unique with supercharger!
This diesel bike has been hibernating for winter and it's now time to start the engine! It was a bit stubborn to start with but a blow torch and battery charger solved that! I left the original vegetable oil in from last year which was a mistake because I think it gummed things up. I'm sure a tank of diesel fuel will solve that.
I'll do a few more video's of it if people are interested enough, let me know?
I built this 4 years ago and named it "FrankenDiesel 500". It is normally run on 100% vegetable oil and runs pretty good. It will do 80mph on the flat as a solo machine but I have a few ideas to improve performance (but will the engine take it?).
The sidecar is still a work in progress and is being built so we can compete in the "THE MALLE MILE BEACH RACE 2023" which is being held at Margate beach, UK, 13th - 14th May. A good friend and myself will be competing and having a bl**dy good time!
Spec
Performance: 80mph, 100mpg, 18ish HP (at a guess!)
Fuel: Vegetable oil or diesel
Chassis: CB750K 1982
Engine: Single cylinder 450cc air cooled diesel, 4000rpm, Supercharger AMR300 10psi boost, Modified generator, Modified throttle plate, Intercooler ford focus
Primary drive: Toothed belt, ratio 2:1 (This was to compensate for low speed of engine and to reduce torque through gearbox)
Gearbox: Modified CG125 Engine, Crank replaced with straight shaft, Input shaft support plate fitted
Misc: Fuel tank Kawasaki EL125, Forks CB750 SOHC, Rear wheel CB650, Front wheel CB750

I’d LOVE a video series on this.
The only other Diesel Motorcycle i head of was the one the USA Army developed to have motorcycles comply with the “Single Fuel Standard” (ie have *everything* from Generators to Jets use the same fuel to simplify logistics), but those were a VERY limited production run.
My dream was to buy and reverse-engineer one (and hopefully one day i still could), but this is an amazing project in of itself, and it accomplishes a similar goal!
Being able to run stuff like this off of Plant Oils (as you did, personally I’d love to try Algae Oil), or Bio-Diesel would be VERY nice as you avoid the complexities of Ethanol (or other alcohol fuels), or Syngas Based Processes, just Oil Extraction with Optional Biodiesel Production!
I’m rambling, but all in all this is an AMAZING project, and I’d love to see more on it.
Adding an In-Line Fuel Heater and/or Engine Block (and/or Engine Oil Heater) would virtually cure Cold Start issues, albeit with moderately increased complexity, increased cost, and need for electrical system and/or electrical hookup to wall.
May be worth a look though, they are neat and even let diesels work in the Arctic!

This is great, would love to see another few videos on it, including a run down of how / why it was built. I can then show it to my french motorbike mechanics students I teach engligh to! Engine sounds great I think too.

I think we share some sensabilities, this is very much the kind of thing I would do including the veg-oil. But there's no getting away from it, that's a bloody weird noise for a motorcycle!
0:30 Short of the Fuel Tank/Pump/Lines, that’s nothing a good “Italian Tune Up” can’t fix i’d imagine!
(Unless lubricating oil is also impacted and/or the resulting carbon deposits won’t burn off due to fuel rich combustion)
You need to blend that with diesel to get it to work right about 30 percent or at least 50 to make it last longer or else youll decrease life of injector pump ive seen tjat on mechanical injection! You may save on fuel but diesel lubricates better you can get away with it on used motor oil if the right shop patronizes it to you!!
AMR 500 sup[er charger on a Yan Clone diesel? would love to know more about this set up. Need a little more oomph in my diesel bike so speed of traffic on USA roads does not make driving it so risky
